Try the symphonies of Panufnik and Rubbra, very different approaches to the symphony, and also Panufnik’s Arbor Cosmica. There’s a lot of music for string orchestra that you either know or you don’t.
Wonderful video of a great Symphony by Samuel Barber. The performance was expertly conducted by Marin Alsop. The orchestra gave us a fabulous performance. Bravo three times!!
Good performance and recording. Nice to see Alsop revisiting Barber after that fine Naxos cycle. Also great work on the video: camera and editing (directing). Barber can be complex so closeups of players, at the correct time, is important.
First, love principal tbone's closed wrap ax. I still love to see a closed wrap, so dark on the push through on F side. Nod to principal flute for playing grenadilla as well.
Great performance. IMHO timpanist deserved a solo bow as well at the end. The guy drove this bus, and the timpani is marked “solo” in the last few pages. Such an instinctive player.
Marin is quite the champion of American music-it was great to hear some unfamiliar music when I played in an orchestrator a few years with her conducting. Did you guys do the Bernstein 2nd Symphony during the festival?
Thanks for listening! And yes, we played Bernstein's 2nd Symphony during the festival as well - unfortunately, due to image rights, we can no longer show this on UA-cam.
I think the only reason these three magnificent works are neglected is their dreary titles. "Essay" sounds as dry and choking as whirling dust. Perhaps "Short symphony no. 2" would have been more attractive to audiences and programmers, suggesting all the drama, variety and emotion that is in them. This is a glorious short symphony, wonderfully performed by this great conductor and orchestra.
One of my favourite works (and so sadly underrated!!). What a fabulous performance!
Thank you - much appreciated!
One of my all time favorites as well.
Thanks for the upload. First time I’ve heard this work, there is so much excellent 20th c music that is rarely performed.
Thank you! Yes, there is. Do you like this? ua-cam.com/video/tEycDh_7_FI/v-deo.html
@@NDRKlassik Yes that piece is fantastic too. Marin Alsop nailed it!

Thank you very much for the great compliment - we feel honored!
Thanks for posting this excellent performance and reminding us that there is so much more to Samuel Barber than the Adagio.
Our pleasure! :)
Excellent how those musicians are doing well ! Thanks a lot Christine Petermann
That's a very interesting and beautiful piece!!!

Thank you for the fine analysis of our recording.

Thank you for your kind feedback! Unfortunately, we have no influence on the naming of the works. But we see your point.

If you don't get goosebumps at 10:33 where everyone but the strings drop out, you better check for a pulse... you might just be dead. :)
Hahaha 😄
with the intro before that spot too... magical....
Fine performance except note to tamtam player: hit the damn thing!
