I do think the smallest tom sounds a little different now.
Sadly i could only listen through my phone speaker, that being said, i could mildly hear a difference in the toms, which im sure sound way better through proper headphones or speakers, setup overall looks really good, and love the mics mounted in the ceiling. Very good work, cant wait to see more

Ich wäre nie auf die Idee gekommen in meinen Drums rum zu bohren, aber die Mikrofone darin zu verbauen ist schon ziemlich cool.
Einen akustischen Unterschied konnte Ich nicht raus hören. So oder so hört es sich aber sehr gut an. Digital Tarn war noch nie so meins. Lieber normales Flecktarn oder Schneetarn, aber das als Folie zu bekommen ist vermutlich ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit.

When you wrote "DIY internal mics" I was kind of expecting some sort of homemade setup for the mics themselves, but it looks like you are using a manufactured internal miking/mounting system. If so, what products? Or did you indeed fabricate the mounts? What mics are those? Same as the ones you used before?
Of course, installing the XLRs was exceptionally well-done and clean. I converted my old tried and true 1980s Tama Rockstar kit with Audix mics (the cheaper F-series models) and using just the May Internal Miking System brackets (you used to be able to buy just the brackets and the included pre-built XLR connector - now they only come with the D-series mics which are a fair bit more, but great quality). Being on a budget, i was able to repurpose the mics I already had been using externally. And what an improvement it was to my old Pinto of a drum set.
Being a long-time fan of internal miking, I would totally geek out on a video covering just that aspect of this project. 😁

At 2:57 you can see how I removed only the clamping part of the mounting system that attaches to the rim. That left me with a T shaped piece on the remaining mount which I screwed into the toms where I drilled those two small holes. (3:06)
You can find the exact mics I use in the link in the description (recommended recording gear).
They are from the t.bone DC 1500 set. To be precise, the model is the CD65. If you look at the picture on the thomann website, you can see the chrome part that I removed and the screw(s) that were holding that part.
I've read a lot about the May system and seen a few reviews, but in the end i find that just way too expensive and since I prefer DIY projects anyway, it cost me only a few bucks for the screws and xlr parts/cables etc ;)
My smallest Tom is only 6" deep, so that was tricky to get the mic in there without having anything touch the heads.
A friend also had the idea of removing the capsules of the mics and making new housings with a 3D printer. Somewhat like those 90° SM57 conversions. That would have maybe been the plan-b 😅

Gotta be at ease in the creative space, running into annoyances no matter how small, can really impact the process.
Then again I know some people that make wild music and their ''studios'' are a true manifestation of chaos.
Regarding the sound, one could nitpick all day. I'd like to say I like the sound of the old toms a bit better, especially when combined with the double bass.
Would I be able to blindly A-B test them correctly? Probably not.
Would this be of any importance in a full mix with dynamics and EQ? Sure as hell not.
Regarding the looks, it's tight as fuck. Nothing more to be said.
My thoughts exactly. The biggest difference is that they feel a bit more boomy to me, and that can probably be fixed in the mix anyway.

It's been done for a very very long time and it is far superior for many, many reason: virtually no cymbal bleed, cleaner space as we see here, less risk of equipment damage from stick strikes and better capture of the tone from the point of impact of the stick on the head.
The mic is directly below the impact, whereas on the outside, it is at the rim and subject to the overtones and undertones from the drum head's ripple towards the outside after a stick hit.
Why the entire industry hasn't moved to internal miking has always been a mystery. My best guess is because then it is hard to access the mics in case of a needed repair or replacement or adjustment. Plus it cost more money to install internally. But the trade offs are soooo worth it.

Yeah, but it is noticeable and definitely better with internal miking. And what you're not seeing is the different degrees of processing that needed to happen to the external mics, versus the internal mics, to get to the nearly same result.
Internal miking will always have a fuller, more easily controlled sound that needs no adjustment for cymbal bleed (which is what kills the life of a tom). Or bleed/resonance from adjacent toms for that matter.

The following day after recording the examples of this video, I visited Tobias from Roadkill Music Production who always does my audio mixing and mastering. We mixed the drum tracks together in his studio and I was blown away by the lack of cymbal bleed in the "after-example". For the before example we had to cut out every single tom hit - as usual.
But not for the one with the internal mics. It sound a lot more organic imo and just so very clean.
I must say I was expecting maybe a little less bleed but also a much different sound. But I'm very positively surprised. Not having to cut the tom tracks AT ALL in the future will save a ton of time! And the characteristics of the toms stayed the same or are even more prominent than before.
I forgot to mention in the video that I tuned every tom to the exact same frequencies for both examples to make that before/after test a little more scientific ;)

Surprised that not many drummers do this since a lot of them use the same setup and mics all the time because they don’t have the need or money to buy more mics than necessary (like a recording studio would do). I’ve seen drummers like Alex Rudinger use the “overhead stands on the ceiling “ thing but this takes it to a whole other level.

I've seen triggers installed inside the toms but never the mics. That's pretty interesting. I do have a few questions: I'd like it if you could tell me what are major differences you've seen from a mixing standpoint? Have you noticed they're more boomy and required a heavier high pass filter or anything more drastic? How much of the bleed was eliminated doing this from the cymbals, snare and even from the other toms?
