Dude this is so crazy. We must be spirit brothers from across the country. I deaden my drums exactly the same way for this kind of vibe, I just use lil dollar tree clips on the rim for the folded bandana thing instead of gaff tape Got to work with Darryl in Nashville at RCA A. He’s a master. Love your vids, they inspire me a to keep pursuing the craft. You’re content helps is educational and makes me feel like I’m on the right path with my session stuff. Thank you
First of all, Jake Reeds drumming in this video, every note he plays, every beat, sounds like a record. Like music. Social media is very visual and so information on music is often quite biassed toward what "looks" right. Plus most drum and engineering industry's marketing advertorials are not exactly focussed on offering practical solutions that serve the music but rather on creating material desires and thus increasing their sales.I have been playing and recordings for a few decades, and everything Jake says is gold. All you need is a few mics, decent drums and really use your ears. Being a really, really killing drummer like him may help.
This was cool to see. I have been following Jake Reed and his dead drum sound for a while. Such a killer sound and player. I loved his collab series with Sean Hurley.
really enjoyed this. Jakes "chill" approach and attitude combined with his chops and cheeky technical anecdotes are super entertaining and informative. big fan of his work. bravo all involved!
I agree, never cared much for the cardboard sound. But even hits like Yvonne Ellimans "If I can't have you" (James Gadson on Drums) or Ringos "Come together" had more life😛. They weren't lying .Truly "dead drums" ugh 🤮 🤣😂🤣 Great mic's though.
Jake and Darrell you guys are a God sent! What a education all in a few minutes. Who’s to question you guys techniques? At the end of the day it’s how everything sounds in the whole contents of the mix .WTH those tubs sound great without the other instruments. It would be nice to hear exactly how they sound in a mix. Maybe next time guys. Keep up the good work and have a great and blessed holiday season.
Good stuff... The other in the series have been interesting. But this one was useful too, since this is the kinda drums sound that often go for👌... Next up 'live drums in a dead room'?
All these sounds remind me of Richie Hayward's sounds on the Last Record Album ... Particularly the little solo at the end of Day or Night where he does his little nod to the Purdie shuffle and N'awlins all in under 2 minutes ... the tom sounds are just like that ... then along came gated f**king reverb and machines
I'm glad Jake stuck to his guns because it's out of their comfort zone so I can understand it's awkward for them but he's in his zone , so if this isn't your thing then let somebody who's thing it is run the show!
that 8 lug having less tension absolutely changed my life it sounds like a joke but Ive been wondering why my snare wont go as high as I want it to (I have a 6 lug snare of some cheapo off brand) I now know for my sound I want moar lug
Its would be intereting to hear from people who recorded in the 70's, did they do all this stuff to get the similar sound or was it just concert toms and old heads. Were they using the internal dampers that most drums had back then?
I was surprised you did not pay attention to the snare reso head. I always start by tuning the bottom head. That is where the magic happens. To my ears it sounded too loose and uneven
This was a sick video but there was definitely something awkward about the interactions between Darrell and Jake once Jake started dampening the bottom heads of the kit
>Supposedly demonstrating the sound of a kit in a live room >Effectively using only the close mics in the mix >Not even show what room mike sounds like soloed Why? Best sound in the video comes from camera's mic during the setup when you can actually hear the beautiful room (for instance, 9:35, 10:34, 11:30). I just don't get it.
This was so fun! Thanks, Lauten, for inviting me in!
Thank you so much for being part of the family, Jake. You rocked it!
Sounds rad man! Those hats at the end! 😮😮😮

Not just our sound, your playing
sounds like an instant record. Absolute respect.
Jake The Great On Kit!!!!!
This is a masterclass in drum recording. There are so many little bits of gold in the conversation between Jake and Darrell. Absolutely love this!
We are so glad! 😄
Darrell rules! So fun!
@@JakeReedmusic Thanks to you both and Lauten Audio! Incredible amount of information in a short amount of time.
3 minutes in and I'm already declaring that this should be taught in school... EVERY school. Thanks for doing this!
Maybe one day 😄 We are so glad you enjoyed it!
what I thought

So similar to my drum mic setup. Cool to see Jake chopping it up!
dude, curb your ego
The 16th note hi-hat at the end was super smooth. Nice playin'!

This was my favorite in the series... I wish this was 2 hours long:)
@JakeReedmusic I absolutely love everything about this. Amazing feel and playing. Incredible room....Such a super groovy vibe.
Right on! Good stuff...
Most informative in the series so far!
We are so glad you liked it.
This is just so creative and spontaneous ! Kudos guys for this tremendous job.
New Studio 606 drum content? Yes please!
🙌
Heck yeah, this was great! These have all been great!
We are so glad you enjoy them!
I really appreciate these videos!🔥
awesome video yes thank you jake is the man
High tuned, resonant drums are my happy place, I genuinely found this video distressing but informative as ever!
😅
Oh dude, I love bopped out drums too. It’s another one of my favorite sounds. It’s all about what works best for the music.

Jake Reed rules! 🤘🏼
Agreed 🤘
Excellent video! Keep them coming.
Will do 🙌
So interesting. Thanks for sharing this and please keep it up!
Sensational! Superb vid and breakdown of t sound. Really very cool. 🍻
Damn, sounds sweet. I love dry drums like the early Band or early 70s Kinks recordings.
Killer! Thanks
Great experiment with drum sound! 😁
Awesome, thanks guys!
Our pleasure!
Using a crane as a mic stand is (In Darrels own words) so fucking rad man. Just love you guys.
Firm believer in what Jake said. 8 lug snares go lower (and to me are less fussy tuning wise). Great video with a lot of knowledge dropped.
the difference between jake´s room and this one is unbeliveble
Im addicted to this channel!!!!! 😊
🥰
Leads with the Intro to "Hey Johnny Park!" Nice touch.
OMG I sort of did lol ... it's deeeep in the memory bank for sure.
Dang! Now I'm wanting to go back and redo some recordings! Thank you!
Jake Reed rules so hard
Jake The Great On Kit!!!!!
this series rocks!
funny interesting... you bring such cool things, keep it up🤩👍🏼
Thank you. We will 🤗
Good stuff guys!!
so glad to see someone saying this! play quiet, crank the pre. sounds more heavy than smashing a drumkit up with a stick IME
💯
BCM-10 chillin in the BG... 😎
YYYYYYESSSSS That one is really nice
Wet, fat , funky, dark and subtle. Dig It !
Good stuff... The other in the series have been interesting. But this one was useful too, since this is the kinda drums sound that often go for👌... Next up 'live drums in a dead room'?
Maybe! 😁
Sounds amazing!
But i prefer your studio recording sound, mix😊
Amazing. Now I need to know about "snares for care." :)
They come with Snare Mic, but you can purchase extras here 😄

@@LautenAudio Yet another reason to just order one. Thanks!

Enjoyed the video. I would would never make my kit sound like this on purpose.

✨✨👏🏻👏🏻
It's missing the signature Jake Reed "sample pack"
Always love these vids!
(the sound is a bit off to the picture over here?)
Nice video again. How could you make the hihat mic filtered so clean, with isolating kick and snare ?
In this case, gentle playing and mic position
@@LautenAudio Get it. I’d give it a try. Thanks. BY THE WAY, purchased the snare mic last month and love it.
Make a video how to make ABBA kind of drums
old Taylor Hawkins tour kit from 2011 by the way
Was just thinking this! Great to see his drums still being used.
It keep saying the file failed when trying to open it
You may need to download it again.
Ron Swanson is a great drum teacher
I know it’s for snare, hence the name, but what if you used it on toms? Would it work well?
You'll have to try it and let us know 😁
is this a studio in edmonton?
This was a sick video but there was definitely something awkward about the interactions between Darrell and Jake once Jake started dampening the bottom heads of the kit
Yeah the awkwardness is in the live drums video too.
Maybe next time just play the boxes the drums were shipped in, save a lot of time getting sounds 😊

Not sure I understand why everyone likes this so much. It doesn’t sound like a drum kit.
Well it doesn't sound like an accordion. What do you think it sounds like?
Almost a shameless plug for KZ’s
Dude looks like the drummer from Black Breath
Dad drums.
So glad it was groove instead of chops..
Too much gaff tape on the hi hat...
That's literally the point 😂
I am loving the Lauten mics though. Are you planning to release a specialized KICK mic?
@@dmark2639 😁
Just say no to muffling drums.
