Brilliant movie that vanished without a trace. I finally got it on DVD. I was astonished how good Heard was in this. I only knew him as Home Alone dad.
Heard's performance might have been one of the best in film history. And just two years before this film was released in 1981, Heard played a totally opposite character in Chilly Scenes of Winter.
you can see michael keaton's influence for his role as Beetlejuice in John Heard's incredible performance as Alex Cutter in 1981's cult drama Cutter's way..
Depressing movie. The alcoholic, angry, Viet Nam vet "Cutter" character, with 1/2 his body missing, is unrealistic. "Cutter" is exhausting & depressing to watch. I say "unrealistic" because J Heard gave "Cutter" way too much "energy" in his performance. There is such thing as "over" acting a part.
Exactly what I thought when I first saw this movie. I had read the book previously (called Cutter and Bone) and John Heard annoyed and disappointed me with his overacting. Jeff Bridges, however, was perfectly understated and perfect.
I was the boom man here. Heard was fantastic.
RIP John Heard. Performance for the ages.

Lt. Dan eat your heart out
Heard is a badass here!
RIP Peter McAllister
Where is your driveway in Santa Barbara. I can't recognize the street.
I see a lot of Heath Ledgers Joker in Cutter.
“Let’s be neighborly...”
I hope amber doesn’t take this opportunity to forsake her father

Since you are talking about exaggeration when describing Heard's over acting you might like to reconsider the way you describe Cutter's disability.
