I remember! I'm old enough, and came from a family poor enough, that i remember threading cranberries and popcorn for garland just like Justine in this video!
PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING. The story 'Twas the Night Before Christmas was published in New York in 1823 and is the first mention of a Santa Clause with 8 reindeer. No, Queen Victoria was not the first royal to embrace Christmas trees. Queen Charlotte was. She famously threw a party for children in the year 1800 that included a massive indoor Christmas tree covered in toys and sweets. It is said that Christmas [starting in the early 1800s onwards] caught on faster in the United States than it did in England where it eventually became even more popularized by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. In the early 1800s who put up Christmas trees in the U.S. ? Christmas trees mainly existed in areas heavy with German, Dutch and French immigrants. In Pennsylvania especially some very unique Christmas traditions arose such as hanging trees upside-down from the ceiling to keep children and mice away from the sweets on the tree. I'm half German (from my dad's side) so that's my excuse! The history of Christmas is fascinating! Please do not just quickly google when the first Christmas tree came to the U.S. as it will say the 1830s. That is inaccurate and as you know true historical research goes much deeper than the first link. The 2nd link says a different date entirely so how can you know what is reliable? There are several mentions of indoor Christmas trees in Pennsylvania and New York that pre date 1825, some of which I have included at the end of this video. This includes an early image of a Christmas tree painted in Pennsylvania by a German immigrant family. While many did not put up Christmas trees at this time others did and it is them that we can thank for pushing the tradition forward into what we have today. Watch us talk about the history of Christmas in America here: ua-cam.com/video/AM9kb2-FHjk/v-deo.html
In Canada (Québec) the christmas tree came from german soldiers (XVIII century). A French-Canadian saw that in the front of a house's window and go to do the same thing!😇
Actually originating from pagans.. as part of the solstice celebrations, they decorated their homes with greens in anticipation of the spring to come. Evergreen trees remained green during the coldest and darkest days, so they were thought to hold special powers.
I work in retail in the 21st century so it's all very stressful and soul-draining at this time of year, and I've been struggling to maintain my Christmas spirit and not become a proper Humbug - this video certainly helped! Y'all just make me warm and fuzzy inside from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. And now a kitty cat, as if it couldn't be any more perfect!
When I was in Germany, we didn't have any decorations for our tree. So I got a Christmas coloring book, colored the pictures, cut them out and hung those on the tree. We also strung popcorn and the old pop tops into a chain and used both for garland. Turned out really nice.
That is very interesting actually. I used to have family traditions, now I'm 2000 miles away from family and struggle to have my own. As a kid I was so excited about Christmas that I got in trouble every year when we decorated the tree, and I was sent to my room. Even when my mom got permission from my dad to let me out a couple hours later (after the tree was done and everyone had their hot chocolate), I would stay in the room by myself. I wish I had an opportunity to experience your Christmas festivities!
BUONE FESTE. Grazie mille ciao.
I lost my kitty, a chonky black kitty named Baer, last December. He was 11 when he passed. It’s been a really hard year without him but this month in particular sucks arse. I still cry a lot. Seeing your sweet-faced kitty both warmed my heart and broke it. She looks to be a very loving fluffer and I’m sure she’ll be loved and cared for. Thank you for sharing her with us. Your videos are most definitely one of the bright spots of my day.
I love the natural garland on the tree. It's simple but so pretty. Mish Mish is precious . I am glad she found a loving home. The video made me smile .
I rarely get emotional and teary you both got me there with this video~ lots of good memories came to me and Ken and I have a black cat Coal! 🐈⬛ Welcome Mish Mish! 🐈⬛ Happy Holidays, Happy magical Winter solstice and Yule! Love your videos! 🎄💚❤️
When i was little and used to have a family, i used to love to decorate our Christmas tree with both my parents, now that they are both gone... seeing your video Evoque the most beautiful memories in my heart about my childhood's Christmas, after so many years without them, now i feel like having a Christmas tree once again, I thank you so much for that. Also, you MishMish looks like her eyes lights up when she looks at you while hugging each other, that is so adorable! 😻🎄❤
My parents collect antique cookware and even have a portable wood burning pipe stove. Whenever they pass on I’m supposed to get it all since I’m the only one of my siblings interested in any of this kind of stuff like they are. My mama even has an antique butter churn that’s sits on the floor also a wash basin.
I am Pennsylvania Dutch and French Canadian. I love make homemade things for the Christmas tree. Love this with you make the cookies too. Can’t wait to see the tree all done
I grew up in Maine in a small town. It was very common in New England to still keep up with some of these old ways. Decorating a Christmas tree with fruit garlands or even popcorn. Candles in every window. We even had a red twig star to put on top. It's cool to see that some traditions that started hundreds of years ago are still going strong. 🙂
Watching you trim your tree reminds me of the sweetness and innocence of my childhood Christmases. Thank you for that! Merry Christmas you two. And your sweet new kitty! 🐈⬛ ❤🎄🎅💚
This is great! As a civil war reenactor, I truly appreciate how much research and time goes into a video like this. Life was harder back then,, but so much simpler than today. Thank you for keeping history alive!
I just love that Christmas tree! I feel like I've lost my Christmas mojo these last few years. Watching this video makes me realize this is what Christmas should be. Warm and cozy with traditions. I think the Christmas trees back in the day were so pretty! Thanks for this lovely video!
To Drive the Cold Winter Away-you surely did that with your welcoming fire, sweet cat, beautiful tree, delicious gingerbread, colorful cranberry garland, and shiny apples. And, lest I forget, the warm and wonderful hug and kiss between you and Ron at the end of this lovely video.
I took your advice and just binged watched all 15 of your dramas. I must say I have laughed so hard I cried. I have an autoimmune condition that keeps me at home more than I wish. I am half German on my mother’s side, so that’s my excuse, too. I bet your cabin smells so good with the tree and garlands and the ginger bread cookies. Love this! I voted for the tree so thanks for doing it today… 🎄🥰💕❤️👍👍👍
Such a beautiful depiction of sweeter and gentler times, taking care of home and hearth, and loving each other. Cant wait to try stringing whole cranberries together or making gingersnaps! Thanks again for reminding us of how to find some peace and calm among all the chaos. Its all about family and home and hearth. Its not about having money and "things /toys" that make life special. Doing a fun task together is so bonding. No internet, no play station, no computers. Just love.
What a simple but beautiful way to trim a tree. I love your videos. I worked for 3 years at an open air museum. The settlers cabin was my favorite. I loved being in there, especially during storms. It was so cozy.
I've really warmed to this channel so fast - you're both so endearing, and it's awesome to see you make so many old recipes and do so many old traditions. Fantastic videos! (Also welcome to MishMish!
Love this music! Very medieval. Mish Mish is absolutely adorable. Beautiful and calming video. Thank you, Justine and Ron, for sharing your world with us. ❤
I love this video! Reminds me of being a little girl and going out with my uncles to the woods on my grandparents' land to cut down a Christmas tree. And the song is one of my favorites, "Drive the Cold Winter Away!" And I have a black cat named Nigel. So of course I am going to love this video! My great grandparents immigrated from Germany back in the late 1800s.
I like the music you used for this video. And you didn't have to say a word to convey the Christmas spirit and a cozy loving atmosphere. A serene peek at 200 years ago!
It is very pleasant to perceive, that quiet, domestic, cozy holidays are not alien to rude big men! And they also take part in the making of holiday decorations for the home.🤗🤗🤗🙃😄👍👍✊
Thank you Justine and Ron. What a perfect tree!!!! I love the cookie cutters too . I watched you and Kandye on her channel so it is so cool to see the cutters being used in a traditional historic receipt! The tree decorating was truly heartwarming. I love the simplicity and whimsy of natural ornaments.
I remember coming back to your channel last Winter. This year's Christmas content is as good as the last. Thanks for adding some spice to my Winter this year once again. I'll be back next year as well. Thanks again from CA
What a sweet little kitty. The love of a cat is special. I don't know how, but keep it indoors. Mine get so much love, they won't go out even if the door is open. Of course they are older and less rambunctious. They usually settle in with age. Absolutely adorable!
I love watching the Christmas decorate with me videos…but this is by far my most favorite one ❤ a single tree, beautifully and simply decorated ❤ And MishMish is adorable! Thank you for saving her 💕
I think it's gotesque when people let their animals climb all over the kitchen table and cabinets.......like cat hair in your food?......it sets off my OCD!

I always thought Christmas trees were not a thing in the US until after Prince Albert brought the tradition from Germany to London, when he married Queen Victoria. It became popular in England around 1850 and then made it's way to the US sometime after that.
Actually Queen Charlotte had a Christmas tree in 1800. It's actually said that Christmas became more popular in America quicker than it did in England with the first mention of Santa Claus with reindeer being in the early 1800s in New York.
My Mimi did the same thing (born 1919). We'd pop some on the stove and string about half of it. The other half got eaten during the stringing. Can't wait for my little boy to be old enough to do it.
My only grandparent that lived long enough for the grandkids to know, was my paternal grandmother, born in 1899 and died in 1999. She was of German descent. We were in the military, so we didn't live near her most of the time, and only visited occasionally. Now my parents are also gone, and haven't felt like decorating for years.
I have a curious question for any big history buffs out there, are these the type of tree decorations and gingerbread recipes that would have been used still by the time Laura Ingalls Wilder was alive a few decades later? I love the Little House books and show, so I’m just imagining if this is the type of Christmas the Ingalls family still had 😊
Sometimes watching one of your non-speaking videos gives me such a feeling of nostalgia, I can't quite describe it. Almost as if I feel at home there, maybe I lived another life during that time. Thank you for sharing such a loving, homey Christmas scene! It warms my heart!
If history class was like this in high school, I would’ve paid more attention. This channel is awesome👏🏻
I've learned more on this channel than I did in history classes. Thank you.
I agree I have learned more by watching this to I really enjoy the channel
but this is not how real early americans live, this is how europeans live
It's historically inaccurate. Very few American homes would have done this.
Yeah.... I love European culture... Beautiful culture beautiful people
If this video doesn't put you in the Christmas mood, nothing will.
The dogs barking jingle bells does it for me (no pressure which kind of Xmas to have, yada)

She is a very precious kitty. I remember when I was a kid, we would use pop corn and thread to make a garland to put around the tree.

Sometimes watching one of your non-speaking videos gives me such a feeling of nostalgia, I can't quite describe it. Almost as if I feel at home there, maybe I lived another life during that time. Thank you for sharing such a loving, homey Christmas scene! It warms my heart!
