Looking for a compaq tripod for traveling? Perhaps the MeFOTO Backpacker Travel Tripod is the solution. At only 12.6 inches and 2.6 pounds this tripod could be a great investment. In this video I will discuss the pro's & cons I found and some things you may want to consider before making your purchase.

Purchased the exact same tripod, it really is well made and durable enough. I mostly used it mainly for travel landscape mounting a Nikon d300s + battery grip with a sigma 10-20 f4 lens and Lee filter system. This tripod sure can handle it pretty well with no problem at all :)

+Yuu Shigure Thanks for commenting. Yea I was very impressed as well. Do wish the neck would have ben able to lower into the spider assy. Would have made it much much stiffer.

+Joe's Photo & Video Channel That's the same thoughts I had. I am planning to get the same tripod for a videocam this time, but currently I'm scouting for another brand to test out. I saw a Chinese-made Weifeng WF-6615B Aluminum Travel Tripod, all the good specs as our MeFoto Backpacker but the thing is, the middle pole can be slammed down fully and locked to the spider, I tried playing with it on the photo shop I visited and it seems pretty well made. I will give it a thought for a couple of days and maybe get it, I will share you some thoughts about it soon enough.

Yesterday I saw it on the B&H Deal Zone page for 79usd. So I ordered it. The catch-only the titanium color was that price. So no orange that I wanted.

great review.. your video is crystal clear. what res do you record in? ive been experimenting with my gopro, and it seems some of my vids still seem a little pixely ..

+handi camper Thanks for commenting. I record in 1080p with contrast and color lowered in camera, sharpening is only about 3/4th to max. Gear I use to record is the Sigma 18-35mm Art and a Canon T3i (600D) that I have Magic Lantern installed on. I use Final Cut Pro to edit my videos and I apply color, contrast and additional sharpening to video in final cut until it looks natural, clear and crisp.

Very similar to 3 legged thing Brian tripod , one of the tripod legs can come off & be used as a monopod . Does this not happen with theme tripod.?

+bobbintonn On this tripod the legs are not removable. I wished they were :-)

why do you say that this tripod is not suitable for long exposures or to use with a full frame since the weight load is 4kg? I own the mefoto globetrotter but looking for something lighter. I use a canon 6d with the canon 24-105mm f4 lens.

The center pole is locked into place. If we were able to lower it down closer to the legs it would be perfectly fine. As far as weight it would hold the camera just fine and would be sturdy enough for most every day use. But when it comes to long exposures, any bit of vibration cause by anything including wind will cause your images to be blurry..

Would having additional weight hang off the Center-Column Hook increase stability even in windy conditions? I intend to purchase this to use on Himalayan treks.

No not what so ever. The neck is fixed to the base. I was not aware of this when I bought it. If the neck recessed back into the spider plate that holds the legs it would be. The legs are nice and sturdy to be so small. But the neck ruined it for any heavy dslrs. By heavy DSLR, I mean anything larger then a entry level rebel with a kit lens. Even my 80D is to heavy. Now it will hold it. But if there is any wind or the slightest vibration. You will end up with blurry images.. IMHO, this tripod is really only good for APS-C mirrorless cameras and small lenses. Get the model just above this one. Its not much bigger. But the neck column is more adjustable. Plus it can be taken out and made into a monopod.

Thanks for your reply. I have decided against buying the mefoto backpacker. The model above this is the roadtrip and since I have the globetrotter, there is very little weight and size difference between the two.

I honestly meant to order the larger model when I bought it. But I ordered it from my home in the US and had it sent to me here in the Philippines. When I got it I was kind of sore with myself. Somehow I fumbled around and ordered this one instead of the Road Trip. But I still ended up keeping it since I can just use my Handycam video camera on it just fine. Now if your taking still shots during the day. It will work just as good if not better then having a monopod. But if you plan to do any photos outdoors with anything slower then 1/4th second shutter speed. Yea its a no go. Matter of fact my generic gorilla pod is actually more sturdy this the backpacker even with the legs at the shortest length and spread out to get it closer to the ground. Just becuase of that fixed neck. Now the neck has an additional extension inside it to get more height. But that only makes the shake worse. Cheers, Joe..

Can I record with this overhead?

BTW, this stand is quiet small. Fully extended its only about 5ft. Hope this helps.

Not to say that this review wasn't informative, but it would have been great to actually see this tripod in action on a shoot of some kind instead of just sitting behind a desk and talking about it.

Hey James, I certainly understand wanting to see it in action. But most photographers would rather know the build quality, size and weight and what features it has. Thats why we seldom show them in action. Cheers..
