    Nice comparison. They all sounded good. It would have been great if you had timestamped each model for quick jumping back and forth to compare. I think I liked the Roots one the most even though I have the Quad Cortex. I'm still happy with my purchase and happy with the tones I get and the ones I heard here. You may have mentioned it but was the Mesa on the QC a capture or a model? Watching the video (instead of just listening to it), it looks like the icon is for a capture.

    Instantly liked and hit the bell as soon as I saw the Cold Day Memory in the frame!!!! Now I need to restart the video and listen to what you saying. 7D!!!
    After Watching:
    Great video! I agree with you tho. I thought roots had a decent punch but sometimes got lost in the mix, ML had didn't have enough low end but cut throught he mix well and cortex was a blend of both. Any reason you didn't venture out more with the IRs? Maybe different speaker all together?

    Now THAT's a fair comparison at last, thanks for doing things properly! ;)
    STL AmpHub for the win IMO, although they all ''sound'' good in the mix.
    Interesting that everybody say the QC ''feels'' that much responsive and dynamic (i do believe you guys, haven't tried it yet, but comparing all Neural DSP plugins with AmpHub... to me, AmpHub wins hands down). So i guess the QC particularly shines because of the hardware part (variable impedance maybe?). I owned a Kemper and an Axe FX II for years, and to me, STL AmpHub sound and feel even better, with any budget interface (I use a Motu M2), so I'm waiting for a future STL hardware unit! :)
    But since the responsiveness/dynamics is the most important aspect to me, I'm really curious to try the QC and see if it's that much better than my AmpHub/Motu M2 setup (which is completely out of the world IMHO). I even compared the AmpHub Marshall models with the expensive Softube models (comparing all gain stages, different inputs, using the same IR etc), and even tho it sounds and feel amazing too, I still feel STL has the edge (even more headroom). REMARKABLE!
    Thanks for this review Jay!

    STL and neural sounds great good
    And ML still sounding like old Red Pod but with more weird high end

    In the mix, STL wins hands down. The other two felt very “loose” or “squishy.” Particularly on the power chords, so “squishy.” STL felt similar on the power chords, but the “In Flames-style” riff sounded tight, cold, and brutal like a dual rec.

    The amp sims were too scratchy and fizzy even in your mix (used headphones to listen) and the QC was not too bad in the mix, however. Personally, I've never really found the Rect to have good sound, either in the hardware version or any modelers or amp sims. Ironically, I own a dual Rect and the QC, And a few amp sims but always gravitated toward my Engl or for more brutal mean ass sound, my 6505 married to a Mesa OS 4x12 loaded with both V30's and DV-77's. Of course, I also use Kohle's IR' as well in the box. In any case good to see you've detailed the challenges with the Rect in the QC.

    Tried the challenge of making a rectifier tone. Completely agree on the low end part.
    I ended up using a tube screamer and myth drive together to get a more modern metal tone. Lookup victorywithin on the cloud for Mesa bright 2.
    Going to try some stuff using the Mikko player an export the impulse responses tomorrow.

    Man, I’ve had the same problem with most Dual Rec plug ins/Modelers. Glad I’m not the only one. I love the real amp but it just doesn’t translate to digital for some reason…and I am generally a big advocate of plugins and mods.

    AmpHub wins for me, seems to sit best in the mix, the other 2 felt like they could use some extra highs and less lower mids.

    One of my favorite Rectifier sims is the one on the Headrush boards (with 3rd party IRs). Probably because it doesn't really sound like a Rectifier. Ha! The one in THU is pretty decent as well. None are really all that great, IMO. Such a hard amp to model.

    • @JeremyFoxMusic
      @JeremyFoxMusic  2 роки тому

      Yeah, for whatever reason it does seem to be hard to model. Or at least it’s hard to get the tones you know are possible on a real Dual Rec with sims. I’ll have to try the one in THU again and see how that does, it’s been a while since I’ve used it.

  • @SomeDudeDan

    The Quad-Cortex wins in my opinion, it have that little plus what I would (only) expect from a real amp.

    The ML Sound Lab delivered the mega heaviness in SPADES whereas the STL Tones sounded clearer and more defined overall. A near dead heat between those two. I am surprised to be honest how kind of lackluster the QC sounded here. I expected to like it more.

    I think with the Friedman OD as a boost with the bass knob at 0 and the tight knob at max in combination with the recto in vintage mode mode with nearly maxed out mid and treble settings it sound pretty tight on the quad cortex
    Used the DV-30 IR from Kohles Rainbow and Chainsaw pack

      I gave this a try and still didn’t work out well, the tone was still kinda loose and flabby. However, I swapped out the Friedman OD for a Horizon Devices Precision Drive capture with the attack at 4. I turned the bass in the capture all the way down and cranked the mids and it sound sick! I’ll try to post something with this soon.

    STL is clearly the winner although I wanted the quad to win. Second maybe was the quad, but again I am not sure...it was somehow lost in the mix even though it had better low end..!

    • @JeremyFoxMusic
      @JeremyFoxMusic  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, the Dual Rec amp sim on the QC is one I’ve struggled to really dial in a good tone with. The 5150iii and VH4 (which will be what the next amp sim comparison is on BTW) are fantastic. As are the Marshall amp sims. Just something about the Dual Rec that makes it really difficult to get a tight chunky tone out of it. It’s all flabby low end. I’ve got a new guitar coming in soon which will have a set of BKP Aftermaths so I’m gonna revisit it once I get that and see how things sound with those. Hoping it’ll be better but I guess we’ll see.
      Anyways, thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! 🤘

    I'm not sure why you keep putting eq before the amp, you are basically eq ing your pickups, I'd change the pickups if you need to eq them so drastically. Eq the amp after the amp block.

    • @JeremyFoxMusic
      @JeremyFoxMusic  3 роки тому +1

      I’ve explained it, many times in fact. To shaped the DI single to my liking. This is exactly why there are EQ pedals made to go in front of an amp. This isn’t a new concept.

    • @garysayers9476
      @garysayers9476 3 роки тому

      @@JeremyFoxMusic Not a new concept I agree, but usually used for specific tones like lo-fi or maybe to boost upper mids for a lead part. Anyway probably agree to disagree on this one.
