I was a junior animator back in the late 90's and I worked on Clippy, as well as other Microsoft 'agents'. We thought they were just as lame as the public did when they were finally released! It's Microsoft, so you know it's going to suck.
That's my small bit of touching cultural history. Pathetic, I know!

For what it's worth, for me 90% of the Clippy dislike was having him pop up over my work. A talking paper clip with googly eyes was actually a perfectly fine mascot for Microsoft Office at the time. Years later, I kinda feel like a Clippy myself most days. Anyway, thanks for your contribution to computing history!
