The story behind this song is that a fisherman in a Currach was out fishing when his boat was surrounded by fog. He heard this song coming from beyond the mist. He believed it was Fairy’s playing on a near by Island. Being a fiddle player He sat in silence and listen intently to remembered the notes of the sounds he was hearing in order to play them and share it amongst other musicians. Later words were put to the tune. Many years later a German Cetologist, a person who studies whales, heard the song. He remarked how similar it was to a Whale song. It is now believed that what the fisherman heard was a whale song and that the canvas skin bottom of his currach boat acted as an amplifier.
Ah I come from Kerry my family have lived right off the Blasket Islands when the winds from the Atlantic come in ..they reflect off the rocks causing harmonics and sounds similar to this hence our LOCAL belief that the rocks the earth the sea the land itself ..is alive.. in Irish we have many names for this ... come to Kerry and go out to the Dingle to experience this yourself .. I live these days in Berlin Germany but this part of the world is very spriitual ..
I love how the atmospherics are increased by the outside, nighttime, fireside shoot, with the cello-like instrument being connected via vacuum cleaner-like hoses to the Bodhran drums upright on either side of Muireann as she sings, to convey the sound of the sea creatures through the skins on the frames. Very innovative reinterpretation by Billy & Muireann.

Wow! If you have an emotional block and need to let those tears go, you can't beat this, especially through the headphones. So beautiful. Thank you so much.
Draíochtúil! 🌠Bhí cuid den fhonn seo ag gabháil timpeall mo chinn ó chuala mé sibh an tseachtain seo caite sa Daingean, ach ag cínnt orm cuimhniú ar níos mó ná blaisín ❤️ míle buíochas

I can't understand a word... but my tears do...
So mournfully beautiful, who would dislike this?

I absolutely love the dark smoky atmosphere in this song and video
Muireann Your voice is amazing! Greetings for Argentina!
I was told he heard the sounds through the canvas of his boat. Grand interpretation of the tune by Muireann.
there's a theory it was the song of humpback whales
Very Beautiful and moving.
Beautiful and haunting. Amazing voice, amazing fiddle
This was so beautiful it gave me chills, I love hearing the Irish language, it draws me to the land of my ancestors.
My family came from there. It evokes my ties to the sea and why I feel this pull to the ocean. The Islands look much more tame from the Kerry Coast.
Beautiful as always my favourite Irish artist
What a beautiful voice. Like that strange stringed instrument. Sorta a bit haunting.

Inspired by humpback whale song resonating on small currach boats, the currach resonating as a sound board.

They are conjuring. Core Earth stuff. It's in our marrow and nature reminds us. They give voice to it.
Ceol uaigneach agus glór meallacach.
Íomhánna álainn agus ceol iontach atá déanta agat.
Tolkien based Elvish on Celtic languages in part, but the Elvish word for "blackberries" is "piuccai"...
