  • Some limitations of the EcoFlow PowerStream that many reviewers and probably EcoFlow are less keen to discuss.
Please don't see this as a negative review. The PowerStream is a great product that works well and is incredibly useful. However, I bought this unit so I can cover all these points. There's no way that most reviewers would cover a product this way if it had been sent to them. There would definitely need to be a little more balance. If you're happy with all these limitations, you know you've got a product that you will be 100% happy with!

Evening, great video. I am enjoying my Powerstream and understand all of these shortfalls. It does have it limits but still think it’s a great system for the price. I have an issue where by, mine will randomly output 600w max from the battery even though base load is only set to 30/50w and smart plugs usage is no where near that, it’s so strange, seems to happen when I add a new smart plug to the mix.
Have you noticed this? Seems to come and go, so frustrating! All my solar generation is going to the neighbours and not me !!!

I'm looking at getting a Delta Max (2000) and a transfer switch for the sake of having basic power when an outage occurs - I'm talking lights, 2 routers and TV and fridge. I'll also be getting some EcFlow portable solar panels to help alleviate the constant need to charge the Delta Max with grid power.

There are several things I don't think are not mentioned here that are important and downsides
    1. It's tied to a management server in China, all automation goes via it so if they go away or geopolitical stuff happens - poof you mostly own a brick
    2. The moment you want more than maybe 2KWh it's incredibly expensive compared to proper wired in solutions (and except in a small flat you will want more than 2KWh once you dabble ;)) so it's actually not a good beginning as you can't upgrade it to the size you'll want
    3. The 12v output of the units is only a bit over 100W. That prevents you using a lot of the camping/caravan style efficient 12v kit to save power
    4. The automation is very limited unless you install 3rd party tools (which still all depend on China)
    5. The range on the powerstream wifi is dire, and the smartplugs likewise. Fine for the intended small Chinese/European apartment but not good anywhere else
    6. Their support is now terribly slow, and returns even slower (big issue as their QA is also iffy - just check how often they have refurb units for sale).
The EPS mode with solar they added in firmware is excellent though if your use case is emergency backup and you want to also get the benefit from solar, as is the ability now to stack solar on the battery and the powerstream.
Never buy their kit except on a special special offer with coupons and all the rest. If you missed the sale just wait a couple of weeks and there will be another one.

As for the battery/solar + powerstream/solar, it works with my river2max. I have 2x100W panels connected to it, and 2x400w panels directly to powerstream. And I've set river2max to turn on 12V plug > Powerstream when it's charged over 80%. So it sends maximum 100W via 12v, which is cool for my purpose.
While Powerstream and 2x400W panels through day sends the maximum it gets from solar to the grid or devices in my house.

Do you wonder if you could add to this Delta 2. And have something like that: Solars > Powersteram that is connected to Delta 2. Then stick 12V plug to River2 and connect it to Delta via XT connector . River connect to solars via free XT port.

I really like the sound of the bifacial panels and have found a few online that say they are 430w, as I understand it with the rear side power gain this is increased to 525w with 16amp at 32v. Thanks a lot for that video! However good is the product, it is also very useful to hear its limitations which other reviewers tend to go rapidly about… I would have one quick question for you: you rapidly mention in the video the limitations as to charging: I would like to plug in 1 solar panel directly into my Delta 2 (not through the Power stream), as well as charge it through AC when I have some solar surplus from other panels (through a simple smartplug), and use the powerstream only to send electricity to my grid. Is there any limitation to that set up? Thanks a lot in advance for your feedback.

    • @tdcattech

That would work fine. One of the great features of the PowerStream is that you don't need a battery at all. Just plug it into solar and mains and it will back feed what it can. If your Delta 2 was connected up, it would be fine but it wouldn't use excess power to charge the battery.

Hi, My EF system works fine: ☀2x480w Bluesun into EF 800W Powerstream &☀ 1x480w Bluesun into EF Delta Pro - XT60 input ... If I have the household power demand set to 800W in the app, the application shows me that 800W goes to the house network. In this case, as the limit charging the house is max 600W, is 200W leaking into the outside grid ?
Do I need to set the household energy demand to 600W max, so that all the excess solar energy above 600W goes into the Delta Pro battery? Our base load is about 200 W a day and under 100W at night? How to set Up power demand???

Yes, it's a limited device but for higher power applications, you wouldn't use this type of solution. I think there are some legal restrictions on back feeding power this way so they have to cap what goes into the socket. The MPPT controllers are clearly 500W each so I have no idea why they couldn't work as on the Delta Max 2 (2 x 500W). They're probably exactly the same boards so it's odd to cap them to 800W total. Equally, the 600W max into the battery seems just crazy. Not a clue on that.

@@tdcattech They've been playing silly games for a while, presumably because they don't want the ones they did sell returned and fined. The issue isn't the product as I understand it from the electrician. He thinks it has to be wired in, and probably with a lockable isolation switch (like any other solar) to meet the BS wiring standards
You can validly use it as a better MPPT for the battery and use the battery outputs to drive a load of stuff. With the newer firmware that makes sense because you can tell the battery to do things like "keep 20% or above and mains on, only charge above 20% using the solar". If you are not getting paid for the power used and you can put enough on it that the battery rarely hits 100% it's not that much of a downer, and you can set whatever %age as you like so it's also a small EPS.

But bear in mind that the connection between the Powerstream and a baterry such as Max or Pro is limited to 600W in either direction, so the only way to backfeed the full 800W that the Powerstream is capable of is to have at least 200W also going into the Powerstream through its solar inputs.

Your first solution will technically work but it's not practical because the battery would discharge to fill the gap between your solar production and 800W so you could be dumping hundreds of watts from battery into your grid but not using it.

Hello. Another question from 🇺🇦 here.
What will happen if I power my house during a blackout from a separate hybrid inverter + main battery?
It looks like Powerstream in this case should have baseload setting equal to zero and it will only feed the load required by smart plugs. In other case if baseload setting is above zero and the load disspapears the Powerstream will backfeed the main hybrid inverter and it will simply burn in the garage.
Does Powerstream have any circuitry to prevent this? Socket-to-socket connection looks very straightforward. I also do not think Ecoflow doesn't know about scenario when the house goes off-grid, the infinite sink disspapears but the baring frequency is still generated by a third party inverter.

Yes, you can use any rating you want as long as it doesn't exceed 55V (I imagine a 500W panel will be around 36V). In my experience, each input is capable of 500W even though the two together cannot do more than 800W so yes, if you attached two 500W panels at different angles to the sun, you'd have nice coverage.

So they don't include a battery cable. So you buy this and a delta 2 max and a spare battery. Powerstream caps 550 watts to around 100 watts. I know I should have looked into this more but quite honestly it went back and I am happy with 4kw and two separate panel arrays going into the two xt60 sockets on the one delta 2 max unit. I need to watch your video a few times as I have 3 of the smart sockets sat here. Do I have another go? Buy the battery cable and stick some more panels up with a separate feed to powerstream? Addictive but I threw my toys out the pram when there was no battery cable included and it all went to shit lol

Bs7671 chapter 55, no generator used in parallel with the grid can be connected via a plug and socket. In short it breaches UK wiring regulations by being plugged in, also section 712 it should be on it own dedicated circuit. Also no ENA aproval for connection to the grid. In short the power stream in the UK falls short of meeting basic regulations and shouldn't be for sale. Oh hang in you can't buy one as there all "sold out" 🤔

@@tdcattech I have copies of the relevant section is the BS 7671,, altho I don't know how to post them as images in UA-cam, chapter 55 section 551.7.2 subsection (ii) is the part that says it cannot be on a plug and socket. 551.1.1 specifically mentions photovoltaic sources of generation are included (one of the argument was that the chapter 55 was for backup generators, when in fact it's for ant generation in parallel with the grid and a back up generator would be run seperate to the grid via a change over switch)
There's other issues round rcd type aproval and turn of times, as well as the fact the EcoFlow CE declaration calls it a fixed install and not a portable one.
It hasnt received ENA aproval yet and aproval was only sort after the product was launched, so shouldn't be connected to the grid u till aproval and then requires G98 notification to the DNO.
It's a bit of a shame EcoFlow ignored people on this as it will give them a bad name in the long run. But I suspect the reason you can buy it in Germany but not in the UK is because they've finally cottoned onto the fact the product dosnt comply in the manor they have sold and advertised it.

@@tdcattech the "legal to use" is the wrong phrase. Technically I don't know of a law they've broken, the BS wiring Regs are a standard to prove a safe install, it's not a legal requirement but it's what they use to nail you to the wall should you not follow it, so all good electricians do, same with the failure to get ENA aproval, technically it's your responsibility to check it's listed and to notify the DNO, but no law as far as I can see has been broken, other than maybe miss selling and consumer rights laws (I'm no expert) it's just the product dosnt comply to regulation, meaning potentially insurance is invalid should anything happen, it's also not necessarily unsafe. It's disappointing but I think they thought we were aligned with the EU who have different requirements, but we arnt.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this they may even release a better version like they did with the EcoFlow Wave, the Wave 2 is a big improvement over the original Wave oh and what to do with that spare battery because you can’t have two batteries plugged in well you can use it to power the Wave 2 and because it’s DC to DC it’s more energy efficient plus the Wave 2 can charge the battery if you plug DC solar into it.

Power loss on modern inverters is well under 30%. The unit has all the required accreditations for a load of countries (just not grid tie in the UK). As to power savings - in the countries it is legal to do grid feed in via a socket it most definitely saves enough electricity to pay for itself. If you can't grid tie (eg the UK) then it's less of a benefit but works for some loads, especially if you automate stuff like 2am-5am Octopus charging, and also gives you a really good EPS setup.
