Every morning when I was in school, I'd see this fox run across the field. It was beautiful. Some days it'd stop, stare at me as I waited for my bus, then just wander back into the woods. I used to find it odd how it'd walk down the path beside the field instead of in the field or in the woods. It'd just take the path all the way down to the woods. Then one day I figured out it might be because of field mice and may be easier to spot them. I saw it go after some sort of rodent. It was bouncing all around jumping. Then took off when my bus started coming down the road. They're such cool animals.
It may be an easy calculation, but if you have to remember everything... Ounces, stones, inches and so on. Also however easy this calculation is while the video goes if you want to follow the discussion you have to pause to make the calculation and rationalize how long is this before you unpause it again. Its more of a something unpleasant rather than hard.
Caitlin seemed so excited about the flying machines :D I love seeing people talk about stuff they're genuinely interested in, it makes them look radiant.
just discovered this talk show series (although i'm a scishow subscriber for quite a while now) and i must say this has to be the most exciting youtube series since kassem g's Going Deep. great idea guys
You may want to consider a third camera with a wide shot showing both participants. The constant back and forth jump between the two angles starts to feel like watching a tennis match after the first few cuts.
I'm so sorry but that moment when Seraphina looks into the camera for a second at 6:37 might be one of the cutest things I have ever seen on the Internet.
The reason that they're having trouble with breaking the height limit is that ground effect is quite strong when they launch, but it decreases as they go up, so that even a very strong, light pilot can only fly so high.
Hmm, if you could find a way to selectively slow down the rotors in each corner individually, maybe having a pulley system where one part is at a certain width at rest but can be pushed smaller or larger for each corner to change the speed and tilt the mechanism that might allow for some maneuverability.
Another entertaining video, thanks. I worry for your safety sometimes, but it looks like you guys have everything under control. I look forward to the next one. :)
science is always worthwhile, you never know what doors will open the solution to the problem you're facing sometimes going to the moon gives you as trivial stuff as smoke detectors, building a human powered helicopter may bring us new solutions to ultralight materials
Of course original aircraft were powered by birds. They still are. That is why bird strikes are so serious for the airline industry--labor costs are already high enough.
The man-made helicopter is worthwhile because it pushes the development of low energy locomotion. The insights gained can be used to create ultra-efficient helicopters which don't require a lot of fuel, nor require expensively large and powerful jet engines.
Great episode! That whole "dual pee-food burial-post-it note" thing is absolutely fascinating. Must be what that old "crazy like a fox" expression means...
Foxes bark. It's like a high pitched yip. Case closed. Ylvis, the guys who made that song, have a ton of far better songs. Long story, but they actually wrote that song to be bad on purpose. They have a talk show in Norway called I Kveld med Ylvis.
Red foxes are not, like their distant cousins, the Fennec, hyperactive. Nor are they as vocal. This is in part because they are not an apex predator where they live, badgers and wolves often prey on fox dens and can easily overpower even a large fox. Furthermore red foxes are largely solitary hunters, which means that their need for communication with other foxes is rather limited, and most of that is done through urine-marked territories, so confrontrations between foxes are pretty rare. In that sense, they are much like domestic cats, they both rely on stealth and speed to not only hunt, but also to hide and run, if the threat becomes to great. The time when a red fox is most likely to be vocal, is when the litter of kits is old enough to go adventuring, typically the mom will attempt to call for the kits, and they might respond. But apart from that, it simply isn't in the red fox's nature to be vocal, that is a trait mostly seen in semi-domesticated foxes, not in wild ones.
The "tying lots of birds to it" method of flying is found in Mediaeval legends - it's mentioned in the Shah Nameh and in the Alexander Romance. Oh, and then there's James and the Giant Peach!
thanks to a genetics and domestication experiment in russia they known have fully domestic fox though it is only a few and they are incredibly expensive
There's a YT video on it, which is shown on the front page of their website. Really wild. Looks like the bicycle is a converted road bike of some kind, probably a carbon fiber frame. The blades turn really slowly. Kind of surreal to think they're lifting a human being off the ground! :-)
i think human powered helicopters could be useful. imagine if they were eventually designed well enough to become as commonplace as bicycles. and seraphina is so beautiful :3 i love animals
I love foxes, I'm so happy for the red fox and the arctic for that we've seen so far Maybe we could talk about tree-climbing grey foxes? or the giant eared fennec foxes?
I went and met Team Gamera in Maryland and saw a few of their test flights. They have a pair of twins who are track runners(high power/weight ratio) and they switch off as pilots. Their quadrotor is HUGE! Check my channel for flight footage.
Rodney Mullen said during a TED conference that "there is an intrinsic value in creating something for the sake of creating it." I think that applies to these crazy man-powered helicopters.
I have classmates working on this at Middle Georgia State College. I walk by the contraption named "simplicity" sitting in the hangar nearly every day.
imagine if we can fold these helicopters into little backpacks, and use them when stuck in mountain climbing, or lost at sea, or in deseart. the possibilities are endless!
I'd like to point out that the moon lander in the intro that flies away via rocket power is wrong! That rocket was used only for landing! PLEASE FIX IT! Haha, love the show Frank, it's quickly becoming a favourite :)
Man powered helicopters could be the new mode of transportation: Not only "green", but also avoiding ground traffic and getting rid of the need for roads eventually
A human powered flying device would require the same energy as it does to lift yourself with your feet. I think the best way to do this would be using leg power. I think the best way would be using a leg press, you can get a lot more force from a leg press than you can from a bicycle petal
I've heard this described as secondary attraction. We know that our friends are generally trustworthy and nice, which makes us more attracted to them, which makes them look better to us.
Interesting fox fact; through a breeding program in Russia in 1959, they found the results were dog-like foxes. They would bark, the tails curled up, and they went into heat more often. The theory is that the adrenalin of aggressive behavior made them fox-like, and when bred out, they became dog-like
Crawfish swim backwards so when they urinate our of the face area it doesn't become part of the breathed in water. Pretty fox. by the way. I kept wanting to pet it. I think they roam the streets in London now. I've heard that they stink a lot, as a way to camouflage themselves from prey and predators too, maybe. This was a fascinating episode! Thanks!
It's official! AeroVelo of Toronto has won the Sikorsky Prize. Congratulations, you unstoppable human beings! I'm only a little bit crazy jealous.
Oh god... how do you resist petting her?! AHHH!
Mr. Castenada would not approv...Oh the OTHER fox
Can I just say thank you to everyone for getting two foxes on the show? I love foxes so this made my whole day, on a day where i really needed it.
Thank you! There's also a link in the description. I am super awestruck by your school for this. --Caitlin

The whole man-powered helicopter made me think of two things:
1. A cat-powered glider.
2. Hank's Helicoptopodes rocket.
do you burn the cat as a source of energy?
Amarendra Mishra you use a small laser pointer and a large, hamsterwheel-type device attached to a generator to power your lights.
Damn thats genius
i have a fox that lives near my bus stop. i see him/her all the time in the winter when my bus comes at what is still night.
I love how when someone says measurement in feet annotation says how much this is in meters! This has to be canon everywhere.
meters are like 3.288 feet aren't they? 3.3 should suffice and that is an easy calculation.
It may be an easy calculation, but if you have to remember everything... Ounces, stones, inches and so on. Also however easy this calculation is while the video goes if you want to follow the discussion you have to pause to make the calculation and rationalize how long is this before you unpause it again. Peeing on other people would also clearly convey what you think about them...
Yes. Being pissed on usually results in being pissed off.
I love the Animal Wonders portion.. Truly, I watch these longer videos just for that part.
Caitlin seemed so excited about the flying machines :D I love seeing people talk about stuff they're genuinely interested in, it makes them look radiant.
in Melbourne Australia the experts suggest we are never more than 300 meters from a red fox.
No more than 50 meters of an animal than can kill you
I love that there is always a new animal we get to meet at the end of these videos. I love foxes!
just discovered this talk show series (although i'm a scishow subscriber for quite a while now) and i must say this has to be the most exciting youtube series since kassem g's Going Deep. great idea guys
Scishow Talk show is awesome! Red foxes being my favorite animal and this being episode 8 (8's my lucky number) are just bonuses lol
welcome back from Defranco inc Hank!
was a real surprise to see you on Sourcefed
The value of a scientific endeavour lies not in how useful it is but how awesome it is.
"Hello Micheal Aranda" Made me laugh harder than I should have >
I would kill for an air-bike. I can't think of anything cooler than flying using your own muscles.
It would suck if you needed some water or just a quick breather lol.
Hank has the same voice for every animal he meets. Its pretty adorable.
Now more than 500 years later, people haven't decided whether to use imperial or metric...
I love seeing all the adorable and interesting animals!
jessi is so passionate its so sweet
You should do a video on Da Vinci. He was an amazing scientist as well as an artist and was accomplished in many areas of life
The little fox is lovely, but Jessi, she stole my hearth!!! Congratulations I love your show!!!
You may want to consider a third camera with a wide shot showing both participants. The constant back and forth jump between the two angles starts to feel like watching a tennis match after the first few cuts.
that fox is gorgeous, so glad we got to see her on scishow
I'm so sorry but that moment when Seraphina looks into the camera for a second at 6:37 might be one of the cutest things I have ever seen on the Internet.

I was eating from a bowl of ice cream when they started talking about Fox pee.... I did not enjoy my ice cream....
YES! I really want to see one!
Hmm, if you could find a way to selectively slow down the rotors in each corner individually, maybe having a pulley system where one part is at a certain width at rest but can be pushed smaller or larger for each corner to change the speed and tilt the mechanism that might allow for some maneuverability.
Congratulations, Sir or Madame. You are my favorite person of the day.
Another entertaining video, thanks. I worry for your safety sometimes, but it looks like you guys have everything under control. I look forward to the next one. :)
I love sci show talk show!
Foxes are my spirit animal. That Fox is just~ GORGEOUS.
I LOVE ANIMALS WONDERS! It's my favourite part of the show!
There's a few red foxes near my house :) Most adorable things to see running through the yard :)
Hank should be allowed to play as the Doctor. :D
They can't have him do that. He actually is a time lord, so it would rip the fabric of the universe apart. Somehow.
Everything in this episode is adorable.
SCI SHOW TALK SHOW IS BACK!
Thanks, I enjoyed seeing the fox.
Look up SaveAFox on UA-cam, you'd be really happy
science is always worthwhile, you never know what doors will open the solution to the problem you're facing
sometimes going to the moon gives you as trivial stuff as smoke detectors, building a human powered helicopter may bring us new solutions to ultralight materials
Maybe they can try hollowing out the rider's bones
+mos ab You're hardcore. I like you.
aww the fox is so cute! and like she said they can come in any color combination, like pink, purple, blue, blood red and lime green :D
Of course original aircraft were powered by birds. They still are. That is why bird strikes are so serious for the airline industry--labor costs are already high enough.
Jessi is so sweet, I love her segments on the show.
That fox didn't make a sound.
What does the fox s-
/shot
I had to do this
I feel so ashamed
/gets in the shame car
foxes actually chitter or chirp. they do make noise, its just rare to hear it.
Is it just me of do I love seeing Hank with animals.
WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY?
nothing, in this episode, sadly.
Foxes bark. It's like a high pitched yip. Case closed. Ylvis, the guys who made that song, have a ton of far better songs. Long story, but they actually wrote that song to be bad on purpose. They have a talk show in Norway called I Kveld med Ylvis.

Foxes sound like hehehehehe, look up saveafox on UA-cam
I think they should have a SciShow Talk Show about human powered helicopters and a red fox.
The "tying lots of birds to it" method of flying is found in Mediaeval legends - it's mentioned in the Shah Nameh and in the Alexander Romance. Oh, and then there's James and the Giant Peach!
"Whats holding them back?"
Me: "Gravity, Hank, come on."
That is the coolest thing about storing their food. Thanks!!!!
who remembers the deadulus project, that was a great success in man powered flight
thanks to a genetics and domestication experiment in russia they known have fully domestic fox though it is only a few and they are incredibly expensive
Hank:"It was a fun time"
Caitlin: "Thanks, it was fun for me too"...
If you know what I mean...
god dang that fox. its so darn adorable. and i just kinda noticed that a fox is like the perfect balance between dog and cat.
Thanks- I might try that. Some other people think it's a good idea too.
I love the special guests =]
I love how the handler and the fox had the same hair color :D
There's a YT video on it, which is shown on the front page of their website. Really wild. Looks like the bicycle is a converted road bike of some kind, probably a carbon fiber frame. The blades turn really slowly. Kind of surreal to think they're lifting a human being off the ground! :-)
HOW DID YOU NOT PET THAT FLUFFY CREATURE OF ADORABLENESS
Great show Hank!
I demand more shows with animals!
i think human powered helicopters could be useful. imagine if they were eventually designed well enough to become as commonplace as bicycles.
and seraphina is so beautiful :3 i love animals
I love foxes, I'm so happy for the red fox and the arctic for that we've seen so far
Maybe we could talk about tree-climbing grey foxes? or the giant eared fennec foxes?
love this channel

I love seeing the animals.
Rodney Mullen said during a TED conference that "there is an intrinsic value in creating something for the sake of creating it." I think that applies to these crazy man-powered helicopters.
Could you do some information about the anlion?
And you got me all excited about a purple fox!
I have classmates working on this at Middle Georgia State College. I walk by the contraption named "simplicity" sitting in the hangar nearly every day.
well the human powered aircraft have made great advances, like in structures and solar powered aircraft
imagine if we can fold these helicopters into little backpacks, and use them when stuck in mountain climbing, or lost at sea, or in deseart. the possibilities are endless!
What do you think about the Antares launchs?
always wondered myself since primary school!
Well, it's pretty easy once you boil it and crack the shell to get the meat, but you also need some butter to go with it.
I'd like to point out that the moon lander in the intro that flies away via rocket power is wrong! That rocket was used only for landing! PLEASE FIX IT! Haha, love the show Frank, it's quickly becoming a favourite :)
I liked the part at 3:42 where Catilin did the little "call me" motion lol. Maybe I will XD
Man powered helicopters could be the new mode of transportation: Not only "green", but also avoiding ground traffic and getting rid of the need for roads eventually
could you do a video on Bose-Einstein Condensate?
I love the animal bit. So great
I love foxes so much. This was frickin' awesome.
yes it is. it's apparently called BASE64?? didn't know about before i looked it up :P
Interesting so far. Good video!
id freak out if i ever got the opportunity so see a living fox from such a close distance! im so jealous!!!
In the bio, it says shows of Seraphina the fox. It should say shows off Seraphina the fox.
All i have to say is that the fox is splendid and Jessi is beautiful.
I dig the ladies of SciShow.
It's also good to have that sort of competition because it contributes toward a drive for science :>
Interesting fox fact; through a breeding program in Russia in 1959, they found the results were dog-like foxes. They would bark, the tails curled up, and they went into heat more often. Scishow, also known as 3 awesome smiles!
I like seeing the talented people behind scishow, like katelyn.
