  • It’s hard to buy a cheap new car these days, isn’t it?
In a time of £40,000 Vauxhall Astras and £50,000 Mini Convertibles, you can count the number of new cars on sale for less than £15,000 on your own two hands.
However, although there aren’t many around, it’s still possible to bag yourself something that’s both cheap and cheerful. We’ve gathered four of our favourites - the MG 3, the Dacia Sandero, the Kia Picanto and the Hyundai i10 - with the aim of finding the best affordable car in Britain.
Join Matt Prior and James Disdale as they take a relaxed look at these low-budget legends.

Car prices are getting out of hand at any level, a base golf with a diesel engine and DSG is 30K a mid spec A4 is almost 60k, not long ago with 60k you wold get a nicely equipped 5 series or A6, now an A6 wit a 3.0TDI and with options is A8 money at around 85k

But people eventually expect and demand better, more improved cars. And in the case of the Dacia Sandero, moving to the current Renault Clio floor-pan and suspension set-up has hugely improved both the ride quality and the driving experience. It has however meant quite an increase in price. You can't get summat for nowt. Better often costs more.....

Easy win for the Dacia in this one :
    - does not matter how good or bad, the MG is a much too old design, needs to be dismissed, period.
    - kia/hyundai, mini category, good fun but little room, more vulnerable in a crash, growing old in the tooth now as well.
    - dacia, newest, most modern, safest, most capable platform of them all. winner, hands down and by far.

I had an MG3 as a rental recently and was generally impressed with it as a basic car. It feels very late 90s/early 2000s in a good way. Great visibility and fun to drive. It has the stuff you need and not all the gimmicks that make modern cars so insanely expensive. The negatives were that it has a lot of tyre roar so tiring on the motorway, you cannot dim the screen and display enough which is really annoying at night and it is a bit thirsty on fuel. It is definitely built to a price but does a surprisingly good job overall.

Dad bought a Hello Yellow MG3 Excite brand new in March 2022 for £12,388. I absolutely love it, yes it's very old school in every way - but to me, having well weighted, hydraulically assisted steering, and an engine thats a joy to rev out to extract the power makes for a very, very entertaining drive.
I find the engine a little odd though, in the way that all the power comes in a sudden lump at around 6,000 rpm.
I still don't think they deserve the stick they still get.

Was there not talk of a new engine, possibly a more modern 1.0litre which might have been more frugal but this will presumably come if and when the MG3 is replaced. As it is, it seems good value for money and ideal for, ahem, older drivers like myself!

    • @IfInDoubt..
      @IfInDoubt.. Рік тому +6

@@paulphillips9228 I think it was more a case of "They should've put the 1.0T in" rather than anything official - and I do agree to some extent, but the 1.5 really isn't as bad as everyone makes out - yes it's dated, but the only thing to fail on them is the timing chain, but most cars have timing belts that need replaced at certain intervals anyway, so I don't see this as too dissimilar, as such, not a big issue - whereas the 1.0T has a turbo, and a timing chain, and being a 3 cylinder is naturally unbalanced - not to mention how hot the highly strung turbo triples run. They're not for me - simple, proven - if raucous naturally aspirated 4 pot for me every time.

When I went to the dealership on a Saturday morning, there was only 1 junior 'Saturday guy' there who was able to take me for a test drive, but couldn't talk to me about actually buying one. So I bought a Citroen C4 1.2 instead. Then in 2022 I needed a new car VERY quickly. I wanted a Dacia Sandero, and duly drove to the local dealership (after checking on the website that it was open). I arrived to find a closed dealership with a sign saying they'd 'moved'. So I bought a Ssangyong Tivoli instead. Haven't regretted either purchase.

@@stevekenilworth Never had any problems with a 1.2 C4 and best of all it was only £20 road tax. Even new C4's with 1.2 engines are way more than that on road tax. Only cars registered between 2015 and 2017 qualified. Crazy. The C4 was much more fun to drive than the Tivoli. Tivoli is 1.6 but has 6 gears and as I don't drive that much (less than 2000 miles yearly) I preferred the simplicity of the 5 speed. The C4 used to almost float along. I used to say it felt more like steering a boat than driving a car. Alas rats got under the engine bay during lockdown and DESTROYED it. Was written off by the insurers, hence the Tivoli as it was one of few cars available anywhere near me or my parents. I had no courtesy car from the insurers so getting to dealerships was a problem. My dad saw the Tivoli as the dealership was down the road from where he walked the dog and he'd bought a larger Tivoli from there a few years earlier. He saw a 2021 reg ex demo with only 500 miles on it going for a song. Anything new was on a LONG waiting list (I think they wanted the demo gone to make space for new cars and higher margin). So I bought on his recommendation (after the aborted attempt at a Dacia) and haven't regretted it. Leather seats, aircon etc etc. It had 600 on it by the time I picked it up in Feb 2022 and it's only now just broken 3000 in Nov 2023.

It will be interesting to see if manufacturers cut prices to keep their factories busy or if they are preparing for the end of the mass market and permanently lower sales (with growing markets in Asia and LDCs as an alternative outlet).

I can't help thinking that if you are in the market for this sort of car, you'd probably get more for your money with a used car? The poverty spec supermini category has always bewildered me slightly.

In Australia we only get the Kia pecarto and the MG3 and they are the cheapest cars available in Australia at about aud$20000 but up until Suzuki Australia stopped bringing them into the country it was the Suzuki Baleno GL and they were under aud$20000 but l did see a second Baleno GL sell for aud$22000 second hand and we bought a 2021 Suzuki Baleno GLX and we paid aud$25000 for it drive away they must be good because the Baleno has been rebadged the Toyota Starlet not sold in Australia so they must be a very good car if Toyota put there badge on them and we all know about Toyota's reputation for reliability my 1997 Toyota Hilux is a classic example of that

Managed to obtain some sense of a comparison between the cars. Overall, it came over as a chat between a couple of blokes rather than a customer-orientated evaluation. I don't really want to know about tea flasks and bags, it smacks of a lack of preparation and focus on the needs of the viewer, just wastes time.

The sad fact that none of these cheap cars are available as hybrids or EVs. They can be. It's just "cheap" cars have to have slim profit margins.
Cost of manufacture and the cost to ensure profit growth are two different things that affect EVs etv

had mine coming 4 years, i20 just the wear tare items like brakes , disks an d pads a new belt, brake censor what turned of abs/esp/tc and tires not bad for a car 2011 and last 3 mot clean pass no advisory's so car has been good yes plus a battery. only recently this week clutch finally screwed it might get me to the garage but not bad 100k miles on clutch, seen face lift one with new clutch at 80k miles. just the same issues most cars get at around 100k mark. next week new clutch a service and full check over and mot going for another clean mot pass with no advisory's, i say to my local garage if i doubt fix it i do not want silly advisory. Hyundai for my ownership so far nothing out the norm been very reliable never failed to start just wear tear items, and i do drive it pretty hard at times so it expected extra wear, like front disks over heated and warped, country lanes hard on brakes of trying to have higher average speed so flat out on the straight hard on brakes before you get to next corner and could be on roads like that for few hours at a time they get bit less responsive they get hot, so what ive needed replaced been very affordable even if it gets driven hard at times

How about doing this again at £20k? There is a big jump in the amount of cars available and since most people just look at the monthly cost there isn't a great deal of difference.
It is shocking how we're being ripped off though. I'm not interested in the excuses of emissions and equipment because the general cost to manufacture has either stagnated or changed very little depending on which company/model.
When you look at spec for spec its around a 50% increase on a lot of cars over just a few years with little justification past the usual excuses.
Truth is when people started buying on pcp/lease the makers got greedy. Now you pay a lease/payments/etc for three years or so then the second owner pays what the car should have cost new.
Selling the car new twice in effect - genius marketing and morally bankrupt behaviour as usual.

Britains worst car review in my opinion, too much digressing. They wasted half of the time talking about other cars and a lot of the rest about things that are irrelevant. Missing was information such as trim options, storage and proper running costs, personally I don't care about steering wheel weights, rather what the view is out the back window.
