Power Wheels Upgrade - Pneumatic Tires

  • Upgrading the Power Wheels Jeep with pneumatic tires. Tires get pricey, so I opted to get 13" tires from Harbor Freight Tools and had to make some adjustments. In addition to drilling holes to secure the rear drivers to the hub, I used PEX tubing to keep the axle snug, and decided to drill holes for cotter pins. So far...so good!

    Love the video. I know it's several months old, but any chance you could post a parts list?

    Been thinking about converting my kids to pneumatic but couldn't find anyone else doing it. It figures the one guy I find doingb it is a physics nerd as well :)

    would be great if you could explain and slow down the video for each step and zoom in for the step to see what you are doing. Like "trim rear wheel drivers"... I can't see what you are trimming or where you trim it. Once you start the step, then speed up to the next step. Parts and sizes would also be helpful. A video that just fast forwards the entire process isn't helpful for me. Cool upgrade through.

    Has anyone seen any easier kits to do this job three years later?

    Very difficult to follow video as it's too fast, would like to know how you took off hear hub and mounted on rear ties but can't tell by video 😢

    Wish you would have shown step by step.

    This is excellent and very informative. I am doing the same upgrade to my daughter's jurassic park jeep I am building. I landed on using PEX as well...great choice. How did you decide to use cotter pins instead of push nuts? Or threading the axles and placing nuts on them?

      I don’t trust the push nuts with the heavier tires...and cotter pins ended up being cheaper and keep the hubs tighter: sticking with the push nuts might require cutting the axles as well. (Basically everything I did was reversible if I wanted). I considered threading the axles too, but thought the pins were easier/quicker.

      Which tires did you end up getting for the JP jeep? I’m looking to do the same for my sons. Was it worth it?

    Adding traction will only damage the gears inside the gearbox. This is why companies don't use rubber tires. It will easily strip the plastic gears inside.

      Agreed, so when they wear out, I’ll look to upgrade the other components...but good to note!

      I put mountainbike threads on the escalade like two years ago and had no problems with the gears.

      That's why you should also upgrade the gearboxes to metal gears.

    • @pdk005

      This is a good point. ESCs with soft starts are good upgrades and metal gears seem to be another required compromise for going to quiet, grippy tires.

      i upgraded a jeep from 18volt to 24 Volt new switch/gearbox/Bluetooth remote and motors, i used the 10" 5/8 push Cart wheels, i had hard / solid wheels at first but they are heavy and strains the motors lowers battery life so i don't recommend that option. Also i have a step-start regulator so it doesn't just take off. it starts off slow then speeds up so less wear on the gears.
      TBH the 24 volt gearbox doesn't even break a sweat so, if you do this, id upgrade and at least but a regulator in line with the gear boxes it starts off at 12volts and goes up to full 24 volts over 2 seconds and has a screw adjustment to slow or speed it up. if you are really concerned you can get metal gear upgrades for your gear boxes.

    Where did you get the tires?

    How is your front wheels alignment/camber/stability? I need to redo almost entire front end to fix the steering, adding square tube frame. Those pneumatics are toroidal shape original wheels are cylindrical they do not sway

      Little one isn’t quite 3, so for general purposes it works great. I’m sure in the long run, the front end will need to be strengthened/modified.

    Can you do an instructional video so I can do the same mod?

    • @MrRatz0
      @MrRatz0  3 роки тому

      My hard drive crashed, but you should be able to walk through the steps using the video...if you have specific questions, just message.
      I found switching out the tires was more work then gluing on bike treads...and it added weight, but I was overall pleased with the end result.

    Is it the same process for an Escalade power wheel?

    Do you think the PEX will wear over time?
    Do you plan to replace it or source a bushing?

    • @MrRatz0
      @MrRatz0  3 роки тому +1

      The PEX seems to be holding up fine...no real wear. I did have a bit of marine grease laying around too, so added a dab on the inside.

    there's GOT TO BE an easier way

    • @wolfserker3179
      @wolfserker3179 2 роки тому +2

      That wasn't easy to you?
      Easiest way is screw on an old bike tire straight to the crappy plastic wheel. Putting real rubber tires and wheels like this is the best.

      just screw a bunch of hex head screws into the rear tires no problem
