You really have inspired me to fix my guitars. I am restoring this chinese GBA Guitar I purchased used from a local market. I am on the process to replace a nut and saddle because the nut was so wore down that the first string was buzzing all the time. When I removed the strings I noticed the fretboard was almost black when I realized it was full of gunk. I was able to scrape out and polish all the gunk to find a beautiful wood pattern on the fretboard. I didn't know how much I love guitars. I am also planning to fix all the scratches and repolish the body.

A tip on the bridge pins ' I take a fine point permanent marker and draw a circle around each one ' 1 circle=1st string 2 circles =2nd string etc. I've been doing instrument repairs a little over 40 years ' it's always good to watch others and learn different techniques. One question. After filing is completed, wouldn’t you polish the fixed frets with 0000 steel wool or something equivalent to remove any possible minor scratches or scuffs caused by filing? Also, since strings are off, I’d polish all the frets and condition the fret board since you already have access. Great vid. Awesome slow and detailed explanations. Thank you very much 😊😀 Yes, you're right, it would be a good idea to polish the frets. Personally I don't use steel wool (but it works fine), I use the graded rubber blocks and that's just because I like maple fingerboards and the rubbers are less likely to do any damage to the finish. 🤔

BUZZING continues I bought a Dangelico Premier Tammany Black Turns out the action is too low and muffled. the strings are barely vibrating and the D string is playing on the twelfth fret. I already leveled the tensioner but the buzzing continues. I think the buzz is on the 13th fret, which could be a little higher. here in Europe in my region I don't have a Luthier and I'm doing what I can. NICE JOB THANKS !!! CONGRATULATIONS.
Buzzes can also be caused by problems other than the frets. My Yamaha acoustic started buzzing one day and it turned out that the brace just inside the soundhole had become loose at one end and the vibrations of the strings had started to make it buzz. Had to be glued back in place and that cured the buzz.
True . . I could give you a long list of things that buzz . . but it's pretty obvious when it's certain frets. The weirdest thing I had buzz was a bass string, the central core had detached from the windings. It took me ages to find it. 😊
(Teton Guitar I told you got semi crushed in the RV slide out) I think I took too much off on the bridge. I'm terrible at math. I did find quite a few proud frets. A few pounded back in. The truss rod was all the way loose, butt bottomed out. I was able to free it using a 1/4 drive ratchet and some gun oil. The top plays super nice but when you get down past 7 it falls apart. I think it had 9's or 10's when I bought it and I first installed 11's and then went to 12''s right before the slide-out accident. It's right at the minimum. I was aiming for 1/2 a millimeter higher. I thought the truss was frozen, fo I was gonna set it up just like it was. The measurement as the nut has about .023 after I filed it. It was at around .035 at the beginning.E, Am and F, Bb, et al, took a lot of pressure. Now they are perfect with the 12's. It will take a long time for new bridge pieces to get to me so I might make some shims in the meantime just for fun, plus I want to play it. We still have Poney Express here in Lakeview Oregon. The bridge looks really low in the saddle. Question, my frets are seriously worn on my 93 American Strat. I bought it slightly used in 94. It was a backup guitar for Guns and Roses. They sold it because of a slight cigarette burn on the neck. I taught myself to play on it and have played around 100 gigs on it. I paid $350 bucks for it in 94 and it was appraised for insurance for $1500, with all the battle scars. I can still play it, because I'm used to it, but I could not use it to record. Too many little buzzes if you dont fret it just right. It has never had any fret work done at what point would you consider a fret finished. I'm thinking about just buying a new neck, but I have over 10k hrs on it. I play mostly rhythm and a lot of Barre chords so the wear is fairly uniform. Thanks for your time and knowledge.
One of the things I love about the Strat is the fact you can change the neck if you have too. I just changed the body on my 60th anniversary deluxe, because it was not much more expensive than a complete refinish (and I got the colour I wanted). It always worries me when someone's had a guitar for a long time whether they should redress the frets. I would get a pro guitar tech to look over it before starting, just in case it needs a complete refret, in which case a redressing could screw it up. If you can prove somehow that the guitar you own was guns 'n roses, it will be worth way more than $1500 but if you mess around with it too much you could loose that value, so be careful . . (it sound cool)

firstly, look very closely at the 14th fret to make sure it's pushed properly into the fingerboard. With it just being the 13th fret buzzing it sounds like the 14th fret is too high. 😊
Yes, I will be doing a video just about adjusting the nut, but this lesson is for beginners so that hopefully everyone can do it easily. The problem with the nut is that to do it properly is really hard and to get the correct tools can cost a small fortune (as much as a cheep guitar). 😊😀
Great video but after you have levelled / crowned the fret to the correct height with this crowning tool, does it leave file marks on the fret which need polishing out? I didn't see this stage.....
The great thing about older electric guitars is that most things can be adjusted. There's usually some fret ware but just make sure the frets aren't too worn,. 😊😃
Awesome! Thank you for the video. I'll try to fix my guitar again. I had fret buzz from the 11th fret to the 14th fret on my g string. Then, I adjusted the truss rod. The buzz disappeared for a few months . When it returned, I put a piece of folded paper at the saddle and it kinda worked. Even with that 'solution', the buzz is still happening. The buzz is now on the 12th and 14th fret -.- I suspect that the weather may be influencing the buzz because of how the wood bends and twists. It's worse during winter. I did the truss rod adjustments and the paper method during summer. I'm thinking of getting a new saddle because with the folded paper at the saddle, it was raising the string a bit from contacting the frets. But now I think I'll try your method since the problem might still happen even though I change the saddle. :) Also only my g string is worn out at the frets (from the first to the 15th fret). the burrs can get pretty annoying sometimes when I play. Maybe this whole time the neck of my guitar is warped...
The weather can play a massive part in the setup of the guitar. I've heard from people in cold and hot countries who have unique issues with there guitar setup. If you have a straight edge it is easy enough to check if your neck is straight and that would be my first test . . 😊
@@guitar-academy hey all your tips worked! I got a straight edge in summer of 2021. The neck was pretty good. Then I followed the tips in your video. It was daunting at first because I was scared of damaging the guitar but it turned out alright. The guitar had no buzz. Then came winter and there was also no more buzz! Still no more buzz as of the time of this comment. Hope it stays like that for a long time. Thanks again man! :D
A very interesting video, I'm new to guitar playing. I did not realise so much work was involved in curing buzz. I have a question though. I had to replace the pegs on my guitar because they snapped when I replaced the strings. The new pegs stick up above the bridge buy 10mm is this ok. Thank you.
Yes that's ok, but the next time you change the string you can just sand some of the width down a bit and they will fit fine. They nearly always need to be sanded to size . . 😊

Sadly this is just your opinion . . When I first started making videos I did them at the normal speed. But when I did a survey and asked my subscribers whether I should speed bits up the vast majority said 'Yes, speed them up'. so I did
The fingernails are creeping me out but I take you use your nails for claw hammer technique. Great video and thank you for the tips and detailed info on luthier skills. I’m having buzzing on my Gibson acoustic 9-12 frets, I adjusted the truss rod to add a little more bow and it helped some but still is bad and noticeable. lol keep like I have to go buy some tools and get to work.

good question . . yes it can. If you put a different gauge of strings on s guitar it can effect the amount of pressure on the neck, and this in turn effects the relief (bend) of the neck. thanks for uploading this, it's really helpful for someone attempting to work on a high fret for the first time. i have one question though , if im using this method on electric guitars i believe i need to smoothen the frets on the final stage after i level them down with the crowning file. so what do you recommend for that? i need the frets to be really smooth a shiny to get rid of any scratch marks left by the crowning file. thanks
To polish the frets first I would use wire wool and then finish with a metal polish. I use Autosol . . but you will need to protect the fingerboard before polishing the frets to avoid damaging it . . I hope this helps 😊
Good question . . I have never seen that happen, but it must happen from time to time. If you live in a very hot or cold country this sometimes causes the frets to move. 😊
I have a guitar that had the same high string action as this glarry one, the neck was straight so no trussrod adjustment, ended up taking off 2mm from the saddle. Open notes and especially F became nice and easy, but now even after the 6th string there are buzzes. String B, and E are clear and buzzfree, but with the others I guees I would have to file a lot, is it normal ?
It's very hard to know what's wrong without having the guitar in front of me, this answer is probably wrong; As a guess I would say recheck the neck is straight and/or maybe you've taken the action down too far. Not to worry if you have though because the saddles are standard sizes and you can get a new one online or in your local guitar shop. Sorry I can't be more helpful 🤔
Great job, mate ! Very useful content. I think you might speed it up when changing the strings etc.. By the way, i have an acoustic with a buzz on the 4th string only, at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fret. If a play light it doesn't come out but if I put a little more pressure it does. The frets seem to be perfect, action is a little bit high and the neck is very straight. Any idea on the cause of the problem or suggestion? Thanks a lot in advance! :)
That sounds like the fretboard or the frets are slightly uneven. Most of the time that sort of problem can be sorted by levelling the 5th, 4th and 3rd fret just where the string touches, but I can only really guess though without having the guitar in my hands . . 🤔

@@guitar-academy my luthier file down the nut slot too much for the treble strings causing buzz on 3 fret when 2nd fret is fretted..now give some relief no more buzz but the action is high back on the first fret..😁

I'm going to have to make a video about that, because it's hard to explain . . put a pair or calipers so the tips are at the base of the frets and on the surface of the fingerboard, that's the measurement. . I hope that helps .

I have a Yamaha APXT2 a 3/4 size guitar....the high E and B have fret buzz starting from the 5th to the 14th fret...tried turning the truss rod many times...no luck. Would adding Baby Oil to the Channel help? Your input will be appreciated. Thanks.
I don't know about baby oil, but some sort of lube would make the truss rod turn more freely. Sometimes if I have a really bad neck I slightly bend it in the right direction leaning the neck against my leg whilst adjusting the truss rod to allow it to move for freely.
Yes, that's a quicker way of doing things. I sometimes do that and hold the strings out of the way. But with a clients guitar I always take the strings off to make sure I can't accidentally scratch the guitar. 😊
In that case I would use a long rail or bar sander and some very find wet and dry paper. It you use a long enough sanding bar it should cover all or most of the frets so you can see when the sander is touching the frets on either side of the high frets. When you are happy, re check all the frets one by one. You might also have to 'crown' or shape the frets that were high because they might have flat tops when you sanded them level.
@@guitar-academy i hit it with the handle of a pair of pliers and it fixed the 9th, 10th, and 11th fret buzz but the 12th kept buzzing to i had to file it a bit
My acoustic guitars have some weird buzzing issue which is when the low e string is press it causes other strings to rattle…..such issues happened after the guitars were exposed to low humidity for around a day. I think both of my Martins have been damaged……Is it possible to save them?!😞
Sorry, I couldn't answer this without actually having the guitar in my hands, to see what's going on . . 🤔 Not much can't be fixed though and you can buy hydrating tools that sit in the sound hole, try searching 'D'Addario Guitar Humidifier Pro' 😊
@@kamchuenso7836 No, your English is excellent . . The only other thing I can think of is the frets become unseated, but if you look very closely at the frets you can see if they aren't flat against the fingerboard with no spacing underneath them.

sorry, the crowning file is so old I can't remember where I bought it, but it's a 'Goeldo fretting file' and if you Google it you can find places that sell it. 😊

But, seriously, I have to press so hard in first position that I get hand cramps. Perhaps a video on how to determine whether the nut or the saddle need sanding? Good question . . It depends on the size of frets. The fretting files are designed to fit in with different fret gauges and if you don't know the gauge you measure across the top of the fret. This one was 2.65mm. 😊

I taught myself to play on it and have played around 100 gigs on it. I paid $350 bucks for it in 94 and it was appraised for insurance for $1500, with all the battle scars. I can still play it, because I'm used to it, but I could not use it to record. Too many little buzzes if you dont fret it just right. It has never had any fret work done at what point would you consider a fret finished. I'm thinking about just buying a new neck, but I have over 10k hrs on it. I play mostly rhythm and a lot of Barre chords so the wear is fairly uniform.

One of the things I love about the Strat is the fact you can change the neck if you have too. I just changed the body on my 60th anniversary deluxe, because it was not much more expensive than a complete refinish (and I got the colour I wanted). It always worries me when someone's had a guitar for a long time whether they should redress the frets. I would get a pro guitar tech to look over it before starting, just in case it needs a complete refret, in which case a redressing could screw it up.
If you can prove somehow that the guitar you own was guns 'n roses, it will be worth way more than $1500 but if you mess around with it too much you could loose that value, so be careful . . (it sound cool)

firstly, look very closely at the 14th fret to make sure it's pushed properly into the fingerboard. With it just being the 13th fret buzzing it sounds like the 14th fret is too high. 😊
What about checking the nut and the first fret? Is it always perfect no matter what or do you have to replace those and sand them too?
Yes, I will be doing a video just about adjusting the nut, but this lesson is for beginners so that hopefully everyone can do it easily. The problem with the nut is that to do it properly is really hard and to get the correct tools can cost a small fortune (as much as a cheep guitar). 😊😀

Great video but after you have levelled / crowned the fret to the correct height with this crowning tool, does it leave file marks on the fret which need polishing out? I didn't see this stage.....
Not noticeably, but I usually polish the frets if I think it needs it.
The fret file is going to leave the surface of the fret rough. Wouldn't you recommend polishing the fret when done?

The great thing about older electric guitars is that most things can be adjusted. There's usually some fret ware but just make sure the frets aren't too worn,. 😊😃

Awesome! Thank you for the video. I'll try to fix my guitar again. I had fret buzz from the 11th fret to the 14th fret on my g string. Then, I adjusted the truss rod. The buzz disappeared for a few months . When it returned, I put a piece of folded paper at the saddle and it kinda worked. Even with that 'solution', the buzz is still happening. The buzz is now on the 12th and 14th fret -.- I suspect that the weather may be influencing the buzz because of how the wood bends and twists. It's worse during winter. I did the truss rod adjustments and the paper method during summer. I'm thinking of getting a new saddle because with the folded paper at the saddle, it was raising the string a bit from contacting the frets. But now I think I'll try your method since the problem might still happen even though I change the saddle. :) Also only my g string is worn out at the frets (from the first to the 15th fret). the burrs can get pretty annoying sometimes when I play. Maybe this whole time the neck of my guitar is warped...
The weather can play a massive part in the setup of the guitar. I've heard from people in cold and hot countries who have unique issues with there guitar setup. If you have a straight edge it is easy enough to check if your neck is straight and that would be my first test . . 😊

@@guitar-academy hey all your tips worked! I got a straight edge in summer of 2021. The neck was pretty good. Then I followed the tips in your video. It was daunting at first because I was scared of damaging the guitar but it turned out alright. The guitar had no buzz. Then came winter and there was also no more buzz! Still no more buzz as of the time of this comment. Hope it stays like that for a long time. Thanks again man! :D

A very interesting video, I'm new to guitar playing. I did not realise so much work was involved in curing buzz. I have a question though. I had to replace the pegs on my guitar because they snapped when I replaced the strings. The new pegs stick up above the bridge buy 10mm is this ok. Thank you.
Yes that's ok, but the next time you change the string you can just sand some of the width down a bit and they will fit fine. They nearly always need to be sanded to size . . 😊

Sadly this is just your opinion . . When I first started making videos I did them at the normal speed. But when I did a survey and asked my subscribers whether I should speed bits up the vast majority said 'Yes, speed them up'. so I did
The fingernails are creeping me out but I take you use your nails for claw hammer technique. Great video and thank you for the tips and detailed info on luthier skills. I’m having buzzing on my Gibson acoustic 9-12 frets, I adjusted the truss rod to add a little more bow and it helped some but still is bad and noticeable. lol keep like I have to go buy some tools and get to work.

good question . . yes it can. If you put a different gauge of strings on s guitar it can effect the amount of pressure on the neck, and this in turn effects the relief (bend) of the neck. i have one question though , if im using this method on electric guitars i believe i need to smoothen the frets on the final stage after i level them down with the crowning file. so what do you recommend for that? i need the frets to be really smooth a shiny to get rid of any scratch marks left by the crowning file.

To polish the frets first I would use wire wool and then finish with a metal polish. I use Autosol . . but you will need to protect the fingerboard before polishing the frets to avoid damaging it . . I hope this helps 😊

Good question . . I have never seen that happen, but it must happen from time to time. If you live in a very hot or cold country this sometimes causes the frets to move. 😊

I agree with this comment. I think what you did here is about right.
I have a guitar that had the same high string action as this glarry one, the neck was straight so no trussrod adjustment, ended up taking off 2mm from the saddle. Open notes and especially F became nice and easy, but now even after the 6th string there are buzzes. String B, and E are clear and buzzfree, but with the others I guees I would have to file a lot, is it normal ?
It's very hard to know what's wrong without having the guitar in front of me, this answer is probably wrong; As a guess I would say recheck the neck is straight and/or maybe you've taken the action down too far. Not to worry if you have though because the saddles are standard sizes and you can get a new one online or in your local guitar shop. Sorry I can't be more helpful 🤔
Great job, mate ! Very useful content. I think you might speed it up when changing the strings etc.. By the way, i have an acoustic with a buzz on the 4th string only, at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fret. If a play light it doesn't come out but if I put a little more pressure it does. The frets seem to be perfect, action is a little bit high and the neck is very straight. Any idea on the cause of the problem or suggestion? Thanks a lot in advance! :)
That sounds like the fretboard or the frets are slightly uneven. Most of the time that sort of problem can be sorted by levelling the 5th, 4th and 3rd fret just where the string touches, but I can only really guess though without having the guitar in my hands . . 🤔

I'm going to have to make a video about that, because it's hard to explain . . put a pair or calipers so the tips are at the base of the frets and on the surface of the fingerboard, that's the measurement. . I hope that helps .

I have a Yamaha APXT2 a 3/4 size guitar....the high E and B have fret buzz starting from the 5th to the 14th fret...tried turning the truss rod many times...no luck. Would adding Baby Oil to the Channel help? Your input will be appreciated. Thanks.
I don't know about baby oil, but some sort of lube would make the truss rod turn more freely. Sometimes if I have a really bad neck I slightly bend it in the right direction leaning the neck against my leg whilst adjusting the truss rod to allow it to move for freely.

When I remove the strings for adjustment of bits, I loosen and pull pins and leave the ends on the tuner knobs.
Yes, that's a quicker way of doing things. I sometimes do that and hold the strings out of the way. But with a clients guitar I always take the strings off to make sure I can't accidentally scratch the guitar. 😊

This covers when one fret is high but what do you do if two adjacent frets are high?
In that case I would use a long rail or bar sander and some very find wet and dry paper. It you use a long enough sanding bar it should cover all or most of the frets so you can see when the sander is touching the frets on either side of the high frets. When you are happy, re check all the frets one by one. You might also have to 'crown' or shape the frets that were high because they might have flat tops when you sanded them level.
my 13th fret was a half millimeter too high but only on the low E and it made the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th fret buzz
Sometimes that can be because the fret has lifted slightly and you need to tap it back into play, this isn't always the case though . . 🙂
@@guitar-academy i hit it with the handle of a pair of pliers and it fixed the 9th, 10th, and 11th fret buzz but the 12th kept buzzing to i had to file it a bit

My acoustic guitars have some weird buzzing issue which is when the low e string is press it causes other strings to rattle…..such issues happened after the guitars were exposed to low humidity for around a day.

sorry, the crowning file is so old I can't remember where I bought it, but it's a 'Goeldo fretting file' and if you Google it you can find places that sell it. 😊

Good question . . It depends on the size of frets. The fretting files are designed to fit in with different fret gauges and if you don't know the gauge you measure across the top of the fret. This one was 2.65mm. 😊
