Thank you for this. I wonder how much of the explanation of Yayoi Kusama's art (& life) is fiction and marketing - but shh: I'm probably not allowed to say/ask that... Very little here that interests me much - including Richter (yawn) = shows my ignorance I'm sure...
Hi Ned, great suggestion. We have a similar video with the 7 best artists born after 1970, whom are all under 50. You can find the video via the following link: ua-cam.com/video/AGMCjy5fx4U/v-deo.html
Hi Jayzin, thank you for tuning in and for leaving a comment here. It is your absolute right to dislike the Tuymans 9/11 still life, but this is simply its story. Tuymans explained how the shock and trauma of the events absolutely paralyzed him in his studio. The reality was too shocking to deal with it, react to it. So he had to flee to idyll, to escape from the cruel event that had just taken place. So what is more idyllic than a still life? Its rest, stillness and innocence? However, in the painting we can still feel the trauma and shock. The grey surroundings are reminiscent to the gloomy and grey sky that very day in New York. The composition is photographed and painted in a similar way as photographing a city skyline. The can of water is placed in the middle as the twin towers are most often photographed and how they used to tower above the other buildings. Then there is of course the scale, and the undeniable monumentality of the painting, not only making that can of water look like a sky scraper and the entire still life as a cityscape, but it also adds the notion of monumental history painting. To conclude, a still life is the nature morte, reflecting upon mortality, decay and the finiteness of things, as if Tuymans is mourning for those victims. Personally, I think it is a terrific painting, one of my favorites in fact. And maybe one would say Tuymans is an average painter, but no-one can deny he is a terrific artist.
Would you consider making a video of artists who have dived deep into still life? Folks who make it their main practice. That would be an awesome video. Thanks!@@contemporaryartissue
Well spotted, there was indeed sadly just one women in our top results. Feel free to visit the article for a more extensive selection of 45 contemporary artists

I agree. The stories these people tell about artists and paintings are way better than the actual paintings themselves.
look at the bright side; there are so many more beautiful paintings to be found at a reasonable price, lol. Let the big money buy these things.
Yayoi ❤️
Yayoi is the best!
@@contemporaryartissue She is from another planet
@@miqyeznik Couldn't agree more, what a terrific planet to visit

🎉🎨🎯👍
Thank you Shlomit!
I enjoy your vids, but that description of the Luc Tuymans 9/11 still life is absurd. It's just an average still life from an average painter.

@@contemporaryartissue Bravo! You changed my opinion.
@@gardeniainbloom812 Bravo to you for being open for a new perspective!
These aren’t really artists who are known for making still life… But it’s a nice video.
They are not, yet they exercise the genre greatly and ingeniously. Thank you for tuning in!

why aren't there any artists, of color except for one?
The list ranks the top ranked artists working in this genre. Our more extensive selection online consists of more diversity.
There is only one woman

Wow. 9/10 of the artists you selected were men. Are you serious?

Damien Hirst, you are having a laugh.
Nice video but there needs to be more representation beyond one female artist, white male artists, and people under 50 on this list.
