In reality only a handful of artists are extremely expensive, the rest of us just struggling. It depends on how high you manage to climb on the “Art Ladder”. Depending on who you know and who supports you, not financially, buy the art critics, curators and gallerists.
You are spot on. The bulk of artists struggles, several are earning a decent living, and the happy few earn a lot. But the big collectors and galleries earn a multiple of the artists. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in my opinion. What is good for the gallery/collector is most often good for the artist, a mutually beneficial arrangement supporting the artist to think about the art, and the industry to make sure the market remains vibrant, lively, and lucrative.
Most people who think they're artists, are not. I see vast majority as hobbyists or crafters, including those that went into art schools or even art teachers. Those still extremely rarely qualify as fine artists. Art market is constantly being diluted with these "Etsy"-type low level garbage stuff, barely selling for the price of the materials (if sold at all). Yes, you gotta be a highly skilled and unique fine artist, plus excellent sales person, to convey both the vision and the value. Also, you better network to know someone in rich circles or amongst gallery owners, otherwise nobody will even consider you. Very difficult to break through, but most artists will never sell a single piece.

your understanding of the market is so detailed & painting style is really refreshing too.
The dog is the real expert here ;-)
She is! :-) Thank you for tuning in
I’m blown away by your straight ahead honesty. It’s mind blowing! You lay out the whole thing (dirty laundry and all) from A-Z in a 5 minute video. The whole dam enchilada. Dam your good dude! Hair cut’s look good. Both. I like the rugged look nice to get a cut though. Cleaning up the edges makes one feel good. Always like getting a hair cut. Can’t look to wild out there!
Hi Daniel, thank you very much for tuning in and for your kind comment. I do my very best! Thank you for the feedback on the haircut as well-I believe I agree with you 😁
Fantastic video you made for us! Thank you for your time and passion by sharing all the videos you make. I specially like this one because I admire how the art moves from hand to hand and how the value changes. And btw, you look sharp with the haircut 😆
Hi there, thank you for your most kind words. Makes my day! Thank you, I am feeling crisp and sharp with he new haircut ;-)

Thank you for the video and for the webinar on art pricing!
The pleasure is all mine, thank you for tuning in!
The thing about art is, you just know it when you see it... if you have to explain to someone why something is art, then either it's not art, or that person will never understand.. Stand in front of a Van Gogh with the proper lighting and tell me that you're not moved.... I once stood in front of the 12 Sunflowers painting hanging in the museum in Philadelphia and stared for so long that I felt like I was having a dream while fully awake.... and the colors under the perfect lighting just hypnotized me.
Fantastic presentation & explanation. Thank you!
Thank you very much for tuning in and those most kind words. Appreciate it!

Hi, Good morning
If I may, there is something that I would like to ask you, if possible, as an artist.
To give you an introduction,
Balthus, the French painter, he never conceded interviews. Finally, one day, he concedes one at the time he finished one of his a bit controversial paintings. The interviewer comes, sees the painting, but starts asking Balthus about his personal prestige and being the head of the Art Institute in Paris I think L'ecolle des Beaus Arts (sorry, I'm not sure).
Balthus stops him and asks him:
"Is the painter or is the painting?" ...
And the interviewer had to change the course of the interview.
When I read this, it stroke me.
I am on this quest of pursuing to know more profoundly about
"THE QUALITY OF A PAINTING"
that Balthus was referring to
when he stopped the interviewer ...
I am 63 y/o , have an Associate degree in Fine Arts , trying to attempt
to present my work to the art world
as a German Expressionist
with Neo-Existentialist intention.
My petition to you is, if possible,
if you could expand on " THE QUALITY "
of a Contemporary Art painting .
Whenever you can, but let me know
if you do it, When you will do it .
THANK YOU VERY MUCH !
@@emiliopoljanec9006 The quality of a contemporary painting is a very interesting but tricky topic to tackle. Sounds like a great idea!
Whew! Missed Perrier!
I enjoy your informative videos. That is why I subscribed. I was disappointed, however, when you asked for comments about which hair style I preferred. Only the style YOU prefer should matter to you. A small matter, but worth a thought. ...Barry
Hi Barry, thank you for tuning. The hair comment was more a joke than it was a real question. To be honest, I am not very interested in my hair cut nor would I change it if other would tell me. Have a great day. All my best, Julien
Thank you for understanding the value of art the most expensive object in the world like my artwork. "Patinga"
Thank you for tuning in!
When selling in the secondary market, do you keep in mind the royalties for the artist and how does that work because I have a feeling that Sabam is not paying the royalties themselves to artists. Also, love your videos because they are highly educational.
Thank you for tuning in, the kind words, and a great question. On the secondary market, the artist earns no royalties or commissions at all. It happens frequently the collector earns a lot more than the artist or gallery did with the first sale. That's why galleries who represent blue chip artists are careful with to whom they sell the works.
Well done and informative. Thank you. The two photographs behind the narrator: whose work and were they purchased on the primary or secondary market? Owned and collected by CAI or the personal property of the narrator.
Hi George, thank you for your valuable feedback as always. The two pieces on the wall are in fact two charcoal drawings from my own hand. I got to know the art world first as an artist and art historian, then as an artistic director and gallery owner. A journey I find to be most valuable to have a kaleidoscopic view on the art world, which really helps to make these videos. All my best from Belgium, Julien

Sweet little dog. 🐾
She really is adorable and a good girl!
Good video. However, there is apparently a darker side to some of the eyewatering prices on the secondary market. Art can be used as a portable and secretive way to move money as long as authenticity is guaranteed by, for instance, major auction houses.
Indeed, there is a lot of unusual activity in the secondary market, especially with private sales assisted by an auction house. It's a good thing this is just a fraction of the art market, however, in terms of value, a very significant fraction...
Valeu!
Thank you so much Vicente, appreciate it very much!
Hello dear, can you kindly explain, what is contemporary means in art?
Contemporary just means current. From NOW. If it's retro, vintage or historic somehow, that means it doesn't reflect current times, it's from the past. A decade old stuffy art pieces don't qualify, obviously. Paint, draw or photograph what is CURRENT.
I liked your hair before the hair cut
All right, thanks for the feedback, we'll let it grow back now :-)
this doggo is the best
She is! Thank you so much for tuning in
what is your native language/ mother tongue? i am guessing flemish variant of dutch.
You are spot on, Flemish indeed.
DOGGO! At about 1:45 doggo wants pets. You don’t need to edit that out or at least have b roll of doggo!
I am always giving pets when I know there is a b roll when, she deserves it for being such a good girl!
There needs to be more historical value
Classic modern art has a flexible value. It has a pattern of increasing in value, so financial interests of collectors suggests that they are interested in collecting and in making a good investment in something that will likely increase in value. Simple.
Absolutely, spot on.
How is classic and modern appears in the same sentence? Classic is not modern.
Handled like a Rothko

New one is better.
Jajajajajaa art and money
Jajajajajajajaaa
A controversial relationship to investigate ;-)
No wonder your dog is the assistant ..suits your comments
Not sure what your meaning is with this comment... Nevertheless, thank you for tuning in
a little more hair
Noted!
Your hair is good to me. If you got it cut, I didn’t notice.
No, the public opinion isn't okay on selling handbags for hundreds of thousands
Money Laundering.
That's why.
Hair cut? I think you just took a nap. Art and Money are horrible when mixed. Nothing looks as ugly as art representing this financial culture.
Art is the currency of organized crime. It’s something that the buyer himself sets the price for in an auction and is a great way to launder and transport money.
