I love my ALP all weather mids.... My Lone Peaks 6 (not mids) seem to break down after only 300 miles. These mids last over 1000 for me and are super light. Enjoying your videos. We're camped here in Tonto Basin delaying our AZT hike for a week b/c of the weather. More snow coming in the high country. And mucho mud! Stay safe.
Yes, I have been dragging my feet too. More weather coming in this week. Coming off the trail for a few days again when I reach Sunflower. More snow on the Mogollon. Just did a hike last two days back south through Oak Canyon to the Gila and back. Most thru hikers I ran into are flip flopping. Some started in Roosevelt and hiking to the border sobo then coming back to head north. Keep Smilin'
Me too. Have been asking other hikers about her, but so far no one has run into her. Maybe she got a trail name. Hope all is well for her. Keep Smilin'
I was on a AZ trail segment yesterday and walked pass 7 backpackers, one was through-hiker and six were segment hikers. All seemed to have watched the same videos and read the same blogs. Clothing and visible gear was remarkably similar. Most of the 7 didn't pay attention to the advice about leaving the non-essentials behind. BIG packs were FULLY stuffed.
Everyone has to find their happy place. I see what I think is too little and too much, but that is just from my perspective. I think this year on the AZT most people with too little in the layer department are wet and cold more than they anticipated. I carry the same gear whether it's 92 or 32 degrees. Some would say I have too much foul weather gear, but I could have sold it for big money many times in the past few weeks on the AZT. It's March 24 and I packed up this morning in a snow storm at under 5000 feet. It is what it is. Keep Smilin'
As you said, you love wading through streams. I'd be interested in how well those waterproof Altra LP mids dry out afterwards. I'd think they would hold in the water. Keep your videos coming ... they're very interesting and enjoyable to watch.
Been through tons of water and snow last 200 miles. So far they seem to dry quickly when I cross Streams and fill them, stay dry in shallow streams and snow. But they did give me some hot spots which is concerning. It might have been they needed some breaking in. I'll let you know. Never needed breaking in on older models. Keep Smilin'
“Don’t Know” is a pretty good trail name. I was thinking mine would be “Mr”. That way everyone would know it. They would always say “Hey Mr” when they wanted to talk to me.
Just received the xeroshoes scrambler today. No cushion but I prefer their responsiveness and flexibility. More room in the midfoot too. Altras are shaped somewhat cartoonish by comparison.
I’m an Altra Lone Peak guy. I have 2 gripes. First, the all-weather version I have is a stiff upper material and it cracked quickly. As a result I just quit buying the all-weather. Is this later version a softer upper material? Second, I wish they would put Vibram soles on these. Here in the midwest, I have a lot of wet rocky trail and the Lone Peak Maxtrac soles will bust your fanny on wet rocks. They have Vibram on the Olympus. Smiles 😊
The Altra Lone Peak 4 was a real problem. I stopped buying them. The material was almost like plastic and cracked immediately. Soles also cracked quickly. So far I have 200+ on this new pair and they are a bit more stiff. They need some breaking in. Actually had some hot spots the 1st 100 miles. Jury is still out. I am hoping they work out because I really like the overall design. Keep Smilin'
I find the waterproof claim on the all-weather model to be nonsense. But the all-weather models do tend to have a color scheme that’s more agreeable to me, and because it’s a little more expensive than the standard model it tends to be easier to find in popular sizes.
@@packtoter I think the type of snow falling / on the ground makes a big difference. In dry powder snow you’re going to have better waterproof performance than in a wet slush.
@@andymytys suppose to have more snow this week. The last melted in one day, but it was very wet. Not saying I'm crazy about the eVent.. I think that is what may be causing the hot spots. Jury still out. Keep Smilin'
Yes. Just saw a pair of 12s on Amazon for $112. After 250 miles I still like them. They needed some breaking in. The 1st hundred miles I did have some hot spots, but the last 150 they are comfortable. Must have needed breaking in which surprised me. My 3.5 Altras were ready to go right out of the box. Keep Smilin'
Ultra lone peaks suck now. Just d got the all weather mid lone peaks. They are narrower by a quarter inch now in the toe pocket and hurt my feet. The older 2.5 fit perfect and were the most comfortable hiking shoes I’ve ever owned. Had two pair so thought these would fit the same but they don’t have the same dimensions anymore. Their whole claim to fame was the zero drop and wide toe pocket to accommodate foot splaying and swollen feet. They were the perfect hiking shoes for hardcore hikers. Why did they have to mess with them.

Very weird weather in the lower elevations for sure! Enjoying your videos as a new backpacker myself. Hope you hear from Sophie or run into her again!

Selling for $135 (25% off?) as of 3/25/23, may be lower on Amzn for some colors/sizes ($113 Prime for black mens 10.5) =)

Dido! Still finding 3.5s used. Not sure what I will do when they finally disappear. Keep Smilin'
What did you need to JB weld?
The toe guard is notorious for dropping on these boots. They should use JB to begin with. Keep Smilin'
