As a foreigner I agree we should not be allowed to own land. When wondering who is pushing the government to change the condo quota, I think one should ask the question- Cui Bono? or equally - follow the money. There are plenty of condos that any individual foreigner can buy in Thailand so changing the condo quota doesnt really make a huge difference for any one condo buyer. Instead I think the answer to the question and comment above is the Wealthy Thai developers. They benefit directly by being able to sell more % of condo project to foreigners and the have the money and political juice to get the politicians ear. The developers here in Phuket are ravenous. Not sure who the outsiders would be that you suggest might be pushing the change.
Why can't they introduce legislation that permits foreigners to own a Square in the air surrounding by cement walls with water and sewer connected.? Remaining Jurisdiction under Thai Nationals regardless how many squares in the air with foreigners living in them. 99% of the time , when the foreigners Croak , their square in the air are handed back to a Thai National.
Here is a related thought. Condos are a fairly new thing driven by the legislation in the 1990s. Here in the US, many apartments have been converted to condos since I was young. This isn't the case in Thailand. If I could buy a place in an older building and remodel the interior to my liking I would. Instead the only condos are in shiny new high rises (okay, The Urban isn't a high rise).
Can I just ask one more time. Do you have government officials/lawmakers etc amongst your subscribers? If you do then bash on. Maybe somebody might stop and think. If not then what's the point in getting angry at a camera?
Now the usa needs to institute the same foreigners can't own land policy for the States.
