Nice review, Tom. Just one question, being an Suv, most families while holidaying pack their cars with a lot of bagges and holiday gear. The added weight of the bagges and gear along with the weight of the battery, won't it reduce the drive range of this vehicle considerably. Lastly, you rightly pointed out there is no hud in front of the driver and that will cause a lot discomfort on long drives. I am not completely convinced this might be an ideal ev suv for Australian families especially, for that price range, one would expect better interior dynamics, better options, good ride, comfort and better exterior fit and finish. Still not convinced this qualifies as a good Suv option for our Australian roads, sadly. I hope Roadside assist comes standard with this vehicle.
Adding more weight will affect range, yes, much like it does in a combustion car. We weighed the Model Y at 1820kg (give or take). It has a payload of circa-550kg. On the HUD point, while there are aftermarket options, that's not really a great substitute for OEM - you never know if the next Tesla software update will break your component from outside the Tesla universe; the fonts are often wrong/janky…I prefer factory!
The HUD would be nice but you get used to it quickly and it's higher than the speedo in most cars, albeit offset to the right, so I find it about the same (I have a model 3 and an ICE car). Would be great for Tesla to add an actual HUD to the 3 and Y though, especially since the price keeps going up.
You get used to the speedo location very quickly. Also, for long country trips - you'll be locked into autopilot which automatically adjusts your speed based off the posted speed signs.
Weight does have an impact, but mainly when accelerating and slowing. At steady highway speeds aerodynamics play a greater role and that isn't affected by how much stuff you have inside.
Never mind families. I'm physically disabled and 73 years old. I had a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S to take my "walker", but struggled to get out of it, even with the suspension on "lift". I sent it back to Porsche and now have a Tesla Model Y long range. It's taller and easier to exit and with an even bigger boot. It's ideal for geriatrics too.

Tesla couldn’t tell me if these cars had the improved suspension, but given RHD production only just started in Shanghai, you’d think they would. Still, the suspension definitely needs work.
Keen for your views on the white interior versus the black. Also wondering if you’ve had a chance to reviews the performance versus the rear wheel drive version and where you think the extra $$$ are worth it.
Thank you for the video. Does the RWD model y install CATL batteries which are quite sensitive to ambient temperature? Have you found any significant drop in the battery performance ?
LFP performance will drop off at sub-zero temperatures. It is ideal for Australian conditions. In fact NCA/NMC has more issues in sustained high temperatures.
Excellent review. I have ordered this exact model and colour (except for black interior) as I can get €5000 off the price in Ireland with an EV grant. I agree on all points, I think a HUD would really benefit this car. I'm happy with the performance numbers considering it's nearly a €20k saving over here compared to the AWD LR.
20:52 Enhanced Autopilot is all you need in Australia. It gets all the features FSD has, bar traffic light alert. At half the price. Just wondering what the upgrade from Enhanced Autopilot to FSD will cost.
Good question. Worth noting that at the time of filming, Enhanced Autopilot had not even been announced, so it wasn't at all in my mind as a presenter.
@@chasingcars I saw your note in the video. It only came out last week en us Tesla drivers nearly wet ourselves :-) Friends of mine have spent $7500 on FSD and came out deeply disappointed. Especially since they could see how much Enhanced Autopilot on my 2016 Model S can do. I would never spend $10k on FSD in Australia. Our government will never allow the beta version they’re trialing in the US.
At the risk of pissing off the fan boys and girls, my new Sorento is bigger, more seats and the range is double in diesel. At $15,000 less and the kilometres I drive each year, it would take 12 years to pay off the difference in fuel alone. If you have the spare cash, go for it. For my family it will be a few more years until the EV benefit makes sense.
I don’t think that’s even controversial. It’s a fair point. EV life currently works for some market segments and budgets and not for others. Will be interesting to see what new models come out in the next few years. The writing appears to be on the wall for combustion globally for most vehicle types. As for what time scale I don’t know.
Since you have upgraded your car with EAP. Is there option in the car to upgrade to FSD. Thinking of buying only EAP for now upgrade to FSD later in future.
Going through the tested range, charging speed and 0 - 100kmh sprint of the RWD Model Y, they seem to close the gap in comparison with standard range Polestar 2 on 69kwh battery? The only diff I'd see is the trade off for ride comfort & cabin noise with the space offered in the model Y.
Tom...a question. If you were not IT savvy and hadn't driven a Tesla before, how long would it take you to become familiar / competent with the user interface to drive this car safely?
Couple of weeks perhaps? It’s not a complex system to use - it just has a lot of content available, so memorising what you can do and the (relatively simple) pathways to do it takes some time. I like the tech though.
Gaz, my wife has a model 3, it’s a bit daunting to jump in from my car because some things are hidden deep in menus. The great thing is that you can just talk to the car and it will carry out most functions, not many reviewers cover this. If this was your regular daily driver it won’t take long to be comfortable. I put an order for the model y because I believe Tesla has well and truely changed the game in motoring- performance, tech, ease of charging, low running costs are a few of the upsides.
Advantages of a future LR: reasonable boost to range (I predict you'll get 60-100km more out of the Long Range), more power/torque, AWD. Disadvantages: will probably be ~$10K more expensive, heavier, may not be available with 19" wheels.
In the U.S. I believe it’s $99/year for premium connectivity, if you pay on annual plan. It’s a little bit hidden in the app to switch from monthly to yearly payment
Ride quality is one of the reasons I chose the EV6 over a Model Y. Good body control is important in a family car, but not at the cost of a comfortable ride.
@@spidermania5726 it's unlikely that it will take that long. It depends on the dealer as they each get their own allotment. I was quoted early (Feb) 2023, but I ordered Feb 2022. The 2025 date is based on the assumption that Kia won't increase allotment as production ramps up and demand eases in other markets. Kia has already upped Australian deliveries from 500 to 600 for this year.
From the front it looks like the designer did a Photoshop cut and paste job to raise the body. I kinda hate the touch screen because you'll need to take your eyes off the road just to adjust the fan speed or look at your speed. Can you open the doors, boot, frunck, (from inside or outside), fold down the seats etc without electricity? Most other non-EV's have emergency boot release, keys etc.
No mention of a heated steering wheel. When I placed my pre-order it specified all models comes with the heated steering wheel. Could you please confirm. Thank you.
Does RWD break traction often in normal driving in the wet? When traction control intervenes does an EV function the same way as ICE? We recently had a CX-9 rental and it was annoying how easily it broke traction in the dry, let alone in the wet. Great videos thanks team!
If the CX9 was the front wheel drive version as opposed to AWD, these and Kluger etc are notoriously bad with front wheel slip. Paul Maric /CarExpert did a review in the wet in Vic and discusses the RWD traction, (which seemed good.)
Bone dry weather in NSW this week (finally) so didn’t have a chance. Others may have. RWD usually isn’t as much of an issue for taking off on hills (in the dry) as the weight is settling over the driven axle.
I can't speak for the model Y yet but my model 3 is excellent with traction control in the wet, hard to get it to slip much at all. I assume the Y would be the same. EVs can control power to their wheels much faster than ICE cars as well.
Before I hit 50, I had bought so many the future of “____” products. Turned out, by the time the future came, I need the genuine future products. And look for speed from the side, I have to say my driving is not good enough for this car with a smile too. Very informative review though.
Hopefully! Looks like most of our colleague publications were also given RWD to review, either on 19" or 20" wheels. I'll ask about where the Performance is up to.
Interesting talking about cost per fill being half that of a combustion car even with inflated charging costs... at the moment that Tesla as tested is getting half the range of my Skoda Octavia 110Tsi... therefore would need to charge twice as often as I fill my current car. Kinda makes the cost per fill irrelevant for me 🤷🏻♂️
That's only on road trips - more than 90% of charging is done at home for those with garages. A fill at home to go 400km would cost about $12 with my electricity rates. What would it cost in fuel for the Skoda to go 400km? My petrol Skoda gets about 7l/100km so around $56 assuming $2 a litre fuel.
Im from an ice car and i am with Brett. The main thing is for me is it has less moving parts by far. I just don’t like hundreds of moving parts to worry about. I heard u never have to change oil or the battery in this matter.
The fuel cost argument seems kind of Irrelevant here. If you can comfortably afford to drop $80k plus insurance on a new car I don’t think you’d be that concerned about fuel prices. Anyways the Kona N is the perfect family suv imo.
I own a 2019 Cerato GT and find the suspension and road noise uncomfortable. Is it better than that? FWIW, the Model 3 I drove was WAY better and people complain about stiff suspension on that car too.
@@chasingcars would highly appreciate if you can advise the median premium on your website or put it out here when the cars for general public arrives. Thanks!
Kinda funny that our ADR'S have a lot of weird inclusions, but doesn't have something like the Speedo being in direct line of sight. Is it worth the extra on top of the model 3 Tom?
Thank you for a ton of useful information :-) ordered mine so I’m looking forward to it paid 46k USD in Norway including wheels and hook, super price and it’s a huge value
It is possibly related to that, but plenty of cars manage to have similar or greater payload without such stiff suspension. The Model Y has higher unsprung mass (wheels and tyres, mainly) which is a bigger contributor to ride.
Which is less of a problem for the Model Y, given its access to the Supercharger network which is currently the best for reliability in our testing. But yes, charging networks will become a much bigger problem as the number of electric cars on the road increases, and growth accelerates.
Excellent Review. Tesla Needs a HUD or AR in model 3 and Y. Hell even a Driver's Display. Surely it can't be that expensive to add to the budget lineup. (not that it's cheap by any means).
Musk refuses to because its counterintutitive toward achieving100% autonomous driving blah blah blah. I agree, it needs one. The arguments against them are stupid because it can just be turned off anyway.
Not having an easily visible speedo in your eyeline is hugely problematic in our speed camera littered country where you can get pinged for a measly 3kmh over the limit.
There is a kit available which gives a display in front of the driver which looks quite nice. The UA-cam channel cftesla (now cftech I think) shows its installation.
It’s actually no big deal whatsoever ever. It’s maybe because I’m left eye dominant though. It’s hardly a quick glance as I can see the speed easily in my peripheral vision.
I’ve been a petrol head my whole life, dirt bikes, 4x4’s, boats planes the lot. I’ve done all my own maintenance however after owning a model 3. I won’t buy a vehicle with an engine ever again. As someone who does their own maintenance- flogging a petrol or diesel just means more maintenance, more things leak, break, wear out.- more work, more money, more rattles and more noises. Petrols and diesels (even performance ones) feel hopelessly laggy and slow in comparison. And going to a Servo (still have to do it with the 4x4) sucks. In aus we have the privilege of owning 2 cars. So you can still have the 4x4 for your beach trips and towing the horse float. Even then we WANT to use the EV for 95% of our trips. It’s so much freaking better hahaha.
Great vid I just got my 2022 Model Y performance. It's amazing however it now cost 14k more Than I paid for it when I ordered. Great for me however pricing out many
Like we've found when testing Model 3, I anticipate it will contribute to additional cabin heat in summer, more AC use, and a range penalty. A sun blind would be great, but the best solution for now is to go for the white interior as it reflects heat.
...with no shade. It is one of the reasons I picked an EV6 over the Tesla. I already have a car with a panoramic glass roof and even with the shade closed you can feel the heat.
Legitimately one of the worst things I noticed when test driving a model 3 in QLD last year. My bald head cooked in the half hour test drive and the aircon couldn't keep me cool. I'm 6'1". It completely put me off the car (along with a few other things). They'd be terrible anywhere with hot/sunny summers. Just my 2 cents.
I got one of the clip-in roof shades for my model 3 and it eliminates nearly all the incoming heat, and easily removed and folded up in the trunk for winter.
Would buy this ASAP if this had V2H. But Elon doesn’t want to cannibalise the powerwall sales. 40% of Australians want this feature and it doesn’t get talked about enough. Also battery chemistry doesn’t get talked about enough, for the Everyman, i.e LFP advantages…well done with this review.
Good review - correct conclusion. American viewer here with MYP and MYLR on order. Im in southern california and there are literally 4 teslas at every intersection. Mercedes, bmw, audi must be lterally soiling their pants. 0-60mph in 3-5 secs for the myp. Its not even close. I hope u get to test a myp soon. I actually found the ride smoother in the myp than the mylr.
Being a huge tech nerd makes me want a Tesla, but... the price, the missing heads up display, the basic interior, I don't care how fast it goes from 0 to 100 (or whatever), that they'd charge $10k for a feature that STILL isn't available in the countries it's permitted in (ie not here). The tech is cool but they still haven't figured the rest of the car out yet.

The difference is peripheral vision. Most modern cars display digital speed right in your line of sight or just beneath it in the instrument pack - you can either see it peripherally or, if not, much less of a glance (with no head turn) compared to locating speed with infotainment, which isn’t where it should live.
Look this will be a great car. So many tiny things to make it better. Yeahm the lack of adaptive dampers on any 3/Y is odd. No buttons for seat heaters in the 2nd row. Lack of suede seat option. No instrument cluster. Dumb door handles. Seriously, Tesla could have a brilliant car here. Cruise is annoying as it just instantly sets it to what i thinks the speed limit is. No inlcuded keyfob, which is still the easiest car entry mode. Even when you order the fob, it unlocks the doors by general proximity rather than the door you are next to. No LR model for Australia. No physical mirror, climate or volume knob is beyond silly. But yes, its STILL the best EV you can buy.
It's that 0-30km/h performance which feels limited. After that, it picks up nicely. Overtaking is good. I just expected a bit better than a best-of-three 0-100km/h sprint of 7.15sec.
@@chasingcars Yeah it was quite disappointing since Elon musk said “Tesla doesn’t make slow cars” although it’s relative. 3D7 motor in the Y RWD has “only” 340nm of torque apparently.

Also wondering if you’ve had a chance to reviews the performance versus the rear wheel drive version and where you think the extra $$$ are worth it.
Great review as always Tom.
Great review Tom, ordered a y rwd was looking forward to see what you thought.
@@fakejake8965 yes LFP performs relatively better in Australia due to the temperature
You can buy a mesh cover for the glass ceiling which cuts the heat A LOT. I live in cairns so this is a necessity.
Nice review! I'm hoping to order one in about 3 years. I need my $TSLA shares to lift to make the purchase possible.
When did Sorento become EV? I didn’t know that.
Since you have upgraded your car with EAP. Is there option in the car to upgrade to FSD. Thinking of buying only EAP for now upgrade to FSD later in future.
Yes, it's just an incremental increase after EAP

EXCELLENT review.
10/10.
EXCELLENT.
Thanks Terry!
Good review. Compared to this vehicle, what are the advantages/disadvantages of the LR likely to be released in future?
Advantages of a future LR: reasonable boost to range (I predict you'll get 60-100km more out of the Long Range), more power/torque, AWD.
Disadvantages: will probably be ~$10K more expensive, heavier, may not be available with 19" wheels.
In the U.S. I believe it’s $99/year for premium connectivity, if you pay on annual plan. It’s a little bit hidden in the app to switch from monthly to yearly payment
When he says stiff he means it.. Model 3 owner here and on city roads its very jarring
Yes, and this is a bit stiffer than the Model 3.
Ride quality is one of the reasons I chose the EV6 over a Model Y. Good body control is important in a family car, but not at the cost of a comfortable ride.
@@amperformance7998 Who wants to wait to 2025 though
Thank you.
Yes, it has a heated steering wheel.
So Tom how safe will this be with heavy hit that massive tablet screen sitting there .?
Doesn't appear to have affected the car's crash test performance.
Good comprehensive review..
Thanks! 👍
Paul Maric
/CarExpert did a review in the wet in Vic and discusses the RWD traction, (which seemed good.)
@@TheMarkdogface Yep sorry I should have mentioned CX-9 was front wheel drive. Thanks!

yes buy it I have one don't need to wait through this review
Before I hit 50, I had bought so many the future of “____” products. Turned out, by the time the future came, I need the genuine future products. And look for speed from the side, I have to say my driving is not good enough for this car with a smile too. Very informative review though.
Thanks Dick.
Great honest review guys. Will you be getting your hands on the performance variant anytime soon? If so can we expect content on that?
Hopefully! Looks like most of our colleague publications were also given RWD to review, either on 19" or 20" wheels. I'll ask about where the Performance is up to.
great to get a review on the 19s. ride and noise are non negotiables for me. damn.
Interesting talking about cost per fill being half that of a combustion car even with inflated charging costs... at the moment that Tesla as tested is getting half the range of my Skoda Octavia 110Tsi... therefore would need to charge twice as often as I fill my current car. Kinda makes the cost per fill irrelevant for me 🤷🏻♂️
Exactly same thoughts here Chris - Kluger Hybrid $60k base spec @ 5.5l/100 BUT with a super comfortable ride
@@Dan007LoveKhmerMusic home’s the key for sure
The fuel cost argument seems kind of Irrelevant here. If you can comfortably afford to drop $80k plus insurance on a new car I don’t think you’d be that concerned about fuel prices. Anyways the Kona N is the perfect family suv imo.
I own a 2019 Cerato GT and find the suspension and road noise uncomfortable. Is it better than that? FWIW, the Model 3 I drove was WAY better and people complain about stiff suspension on that car too.
Similar in some ways. A test drive would give you a great back-to-back comparison.
BYD atto 3 test drive?
What’s the annual premium with Budget Direct?
We provide median premiums, and because not a single Model Y has been delivered to a customer, there’s no median premium.
@@chasingcars would highly appreciate if you can advise the median premium on your website or put it out here when the cars for general public arrives. Thanks!
Hey guys, great video as always. But can you guys list the cars that are direct competitors (both EV and non-EV) NOT based on price?
BMW iX3, Audi Q5, Lexus NX, that segment
Kinda funny that our ADR'S have a lot of weird inclusions, but doesn't have something like the Speedo being in direct line of sight.
Is it worth the extra on top of the model 3 Tom?
If you need extra space, definitely! This car is really roomy and the boot is massive compared to Model 3 (though both go without a spare).
Other cars have had spedomter in the centre.... Toyota Yaris, Prius, Mini etc.
@@zoltrix7779 a lot of them had head up displays and weren't a tiny number on a screen
Thank you for a ton of useful information :-) ordered mine so I’m looking forward to it paid 46k USD in Norway including wheels and hook, super price and it’s a huge value
Glad to help!
Wouldn't the stiff suspension be due to the increase in load capacity?
It is possibly related to that, but plenty of cars manage to have similar or greater payload without such stiff suspension. The Model Y has higher unsprung mass (wheels and tyres, mainly) which is a bigger contributor to ride.
I think another big issue that really needs to be covered in all EVs is the ability to charge. Ie charging network
Thanks. Agreed.
@@EnShinNoi Musk has been late on every single pipe dream he keeps selling us. FSD is perpetually "coming soon".
Not having an easily visible speedo in your eyeline is hugely problematic in our speed camera littered country where you can get pinged for a measly 3kmh over the limit.
Yes, that is one of the main problems with not having a HUD/instrument cluster for us Australians.
There is a kit available which gives a display in front of the driver which looks quite nice. The UA-cam channel cftesla (now cftech I think) shows its installation.
Not supported by Tesla, though. Should be factory IMO.
@@chasingcars agreed.
It’s actually no big deal whatsoever ever. It’s maybe because I’m left eye dominant though. It’s hardly a quick glance as I can see the speed easily in my peripheral vision.
Another excellent review, Tom. I wouldn’t touch an electric car personally, but it is good to see the technology improving all the time.
Interesting. What in your view is off-putting or holding you back from EVs?
Glad you enjoyed it, David.
There seems to be more space in those rear seats, than you get in a new Landcruiser 300.
Can the glass roof be tinted through a third party?

Thank you!
No screen in front of driver is a deal breaker for me, sucks I just wont buy one because of that.
It really isn't an issue whatsoever
It will be interesting to see how the all glass roof goes in Australia
The suspension from Freemont USA has just been upgraded for all Model Y versions. Tesla listens to complains.
Do they supply a star track costume with the car? That would complement the looks of the car. :)))
It’s gonna be a warranty nightmare for Tesla to enable V2H from a business perspective, guess that’s the major reason they don’t want to do it
Good review - correct conclusion.
The shared parts between model 3 & y is not 90% is more like 60 or 70%
The boot is stupid huge. If you need space, there is no other option. If you have kids this is the one to buy.
How come Aus regulators shut down what is widespread in other countries like self-driving and mobile signal boosters…
Regulated self-driving definitely isn't widespread elsewhere in the world. It's a very nascent area of road/traffic policy development.
The speedo is in your peripheral vision just as much as a conventional speedo is, just a different part of it. It's very rapidly instinctual.
HUD is not needed, wish people would stop complaining.
@@taefravis as someone learning to drive, I submit that I would like my current speed as in my face as possible, although I understand this won't suit evwryone
Back when the model Y was 52K it was a bargain, now over 66K before tax lol it's a scam, elon even said the prices are embarrassing. There are way better bargains. Chevrolet Electric Blazer looks amazing and offers almost identical specs for 12K cheaper.
I would love one !
I think 4 year 80k warranty is poor some drivers would be out of warranty in less than 2 years

Not a typo. 48 in the boot, 12 in the underboot storage area, 12 in the frunk.
Now that makes sense since the comparison doesn’t have those extra spaces
Well, as for speed checks, we all have glance down, to check speeds, unless you have heads up display !!
The difference is peripheral vision. Most modern cars display digital speed right in your line of sight or just beneath it in the instrument pack - you can either see it peripherally or, if not, much less of a glance (with no head turn) compared to locating speed with infotainment, which isn’t where it should live.
My Suzuki swift 1.2 liter CVT can do 770 kms on 1 tank = $65. That means I can squeeze more kms from my dollar than the tesla.
9:10 YAASSSSS bring on the “Fruit” naming convention. It’s much better than frunk
Most of us aren't going to drive the model y wearing out butt plugs, so I'm sure the suspension will be OK.

It was so artificially limited off the line…
Very strange.
