Enjoy the videos. I run a John Deere 1770nt 24 row 30" on a 8320 tractor here in Iowa with a 9530 pulling the field cultivator. It's hard to keep ahead of the planter. Most of my neighbors run 36 rows and a couple are high speed. They do very well.
... love the marker arms for field start passes....
I always like to be there to catch that first round to show the marker in action.

It is amazing how much work just one planter can get done in one day. My grandfather retired in 1966 (fall) and he was farming 155 acres total. He had a JD 4 row planter, and you had the markers and you used a rope to lift the planter. And an open air tractor. Just about every farmer in the area owned about 85-100 acres.
Most farms these days are at least 800-1000 acres. Farming has changed a lot
Farming has changed allot since the 60’s but think about how advanced the 4 Row JD planter was to a two horse drawn planter in 1926 or a 2 row check row tractor drawn planter in 1936. I do miss the days of many farms. Growing up in the late 70’s I lived 7 miles from town. Their were 7 dairy farms and one grain farm along the way. Today there are two grain farms farming all that land. One dairy also raised grain so they kept going and stopped milking in 2016 and the other grain farm has kept going.
@@bigtractorpower A friend of mine just moved to Stumptown PA, Lancaster County, where the Amish still farm with horse drawn plows, and other equipment. Another friend of mine had 600 cows in Hunterdon County and quit milking around 2016,he wasn’t making any money. The only help he could find were some young men from Guatemala, they worked 7 days a week and never took a day off. Farming eventually will change to big agri-businesses, so many young men and women are leaving the farms for the city. Another big factor is the inheritance tax the government puts on the heirs, so they sell. Hopefully farmers got smarter to learn how to pass tings along to the next generation. If you farm and are unlucky like my friend, he had 4 daughters and wanted nothing to do with farming. Nothing stays the same forever.

Always great to see Matt and hear from him on how things are going. So they went with more S790's rather than the bigger X models?
Yes the 75th Anniversary S790s were delivered today. I think we will see the switch to X9s in 2023. As of right now there are no X9s in WKY and this area is a huge combine market. There are two X9s 130 miles from me in Indiana on a corn and soybeans farm I filmed last fall.
@@bigtractorpower It's really amazing how everything is hard to get these days. Its the same in the lawn care industry. Very few dealers have any commercial mowers, at least very few have them in numbers of more than three or four per location, if that.I know guys are having a hard time getting compact utility and utility tractors too.
Have a neighbor that went from a 36 row last year to a 24 high speed this year. Planting was late here and his corn isn't up yet but the locals are really curious how good of a job planting you can do at 10 mph. Should know in a few days.
I have seen field trials with a Massey Ferguson 9800VE at 10 mph. It had excellent emergence.
Our experience is the high speed JD seed meter does just as good of a job as any planter a 5mph ( have had the Precision before) and emergence is excellent and even as long as its a good level seedbed. If its a bit rough go 8 mph. I was quite skeptical beforehand. 420 hp is about right for 24 rows at 10. With our cold wet spring this year,we'd likely have some prevent plant without it. Added a neighbors planter to help finish corn only 3 weeks late . Have the capacity to plant our corn in 7 good days. Sometimes you dont get 7 good days in 6 weeks.

How is the corn crop coming along
Little different than my first planter. 4 row 36 inch rows with trip lift. It had a unique option of a water way attachment. Pull that rope and it raised and lowered the planter and put the same marker down. Pulled with a H Farmall and it carried about 1000 lbs. of dry fertilize. Those were the days.

well i don't own a farm but if i did i would buy a planter to suit the size of the field that im doing
Planting is a job that a farm wants to complete as quickly as possible to start the growing process.
@@bigtractorpower yes that is all well and good but you also want to do it in the most efficient way possible
They don't have GPS set that follows the head lands?
They have purchased that subscription level.

I am surprised the farm does not have the new X9 combines from Deere yet.
The farn likes the X9 but it’s not as simple as buying X9s. They are set up with 5 24 row corn planters and the X9 really needs a 16 row corn head to run effectively. 32 row planters would be better for the X9. The farm has 15 semi trucks and 4 grain carts. This works well with 8 S790s in wheat and 5 S790s in corn as far as keeping a steady flow of grain to the two driers and bin system with little back up. Filming a pair of X9s last fall it took four grain carts and 11 semi trucks to keep the two combines rolling and several times everything was sitting. There are allot of components to running the X9. This farm will most likely have X9s in 2023.

Does anyone know the difference between that and a DB60? They seem like the same thing but I'm assuming there's actually a difference?
They are significantly different. The DB60 have a much heavier frame. The DB60 is built to carry 47 tow units to plant 24 rows of 30 inch corn and 47 rows of 15 inch soybeans. The DB60 is meant to be a 2 in 1 planter. A DB60 can also be set up to plant 36 rows of 20 inch corn and soybeans. The 177NT is only built to plant 30 inch rows.
We plant our corn with a White 8 row planter.

Why does the farm not use high speed planters?
Too many big rocks. When you hit a good size piece of like stone at 10 mph lots of things break. They run 5 of these 24 rows at 5 mph and they planted all 11,000 acres in 6 days these year.
