  • Leadership in War: lessons from those who made history.
    E-Lecture of 9th April 2020
NRDCITA is proud to present Professor Andrew Roberts speaking about his latest book “Leadership in War":
Napoleon, Nelson, Churchill, Hitler, Stalin, Marshall, de Gaulle, Eisenhower and Thatcher: each of these leaders fundamentally shaped the outcome of the war their nation was embroiled in. How were they alike, and in what ways did they differ? Was their war leadership unique, or did these leaders have something in common, traits and techniques that transcend time and place and can be applied to the fundamental nature of conflict? Leadership in War presents readers with fresh, complex portraits of leaders who approached war with different tactics and different weapons, but with the common goal of success in the face of battle. Both inspiring and cautionary, these portraits offer important lessons on leadership in times of struggle. With his trademark verve and incisive observation, Roberts reveals the qualities that doom even the most promising leaders to failure, and the qualities that lead to victory.
Professor Andrew Roberts read Modern History at Caius College, Cambridge, from where he is a PhD. He has written over a dozen books including Salisbury: Victorian Titan (which won the Wolfson Prize) Masters and Commanders (which won the International Churchill Society Book Award), The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War (which won the British Army Military Book of the Year Award), Napoleon the Great (which won the Grand Prix of the Fondation Napoléon and The Los Angeles Times Biography Prize) and Churchill: Walking with Destiny, which spent nine weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. Roberts is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Historical Society, the Roger & Martha Mertz Visiting Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford, the Lehrman Institute Distinguished Lecturer at the New-York Historical Society, and a visiting professor at the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London. He lives in London.
