- Legendary director Alfred Hitchcock had almost fifty films to his name when he decided to take on an adaptation of a Robert Bloch novel that was inspired by a grisly true crime story. The studio didn’t want him to make the movie. He was warned against it, told the subject matter was in poor taste. So he financed it with his own money. The result: the most popular and financially successful film of his already impressive career. The film was PSYCHO, and we’re going to find out WTF Happened to This Horror Movie?

Although I can appreciate the historical significance of the first movie, Perkins fully fleshed out Norman's character in ways Hitchcock might never have expected. Thanks to his strong performances in each of the 3 sequels, Norman Bates became one of the earliest horror anti-heroes. He was damaged and disturbed but each movie had me rooting for him even more. The way he's treated in Part 2 is especially tragic. It makes you question who is truly "insane" in this series.
I could agree with that. But more importantly, I think it proves that Perkins' performance was just one of several ingredients that made the first one work. =)
I just don't think it ever needed a sequel
Perkins performance is one of my favorites ever. He locked himself into the character . He was so believable
I love Psycho. I remember hearing about how Alfred's DP would tell him that the camera had issues everytime the producers were on set to keep them disinterested in staying
Thank you for acknowledging the great Robert Bloch. So many people seem to think that “Psycho” went directly from Gein’s crimes to Hitchcock.

The fact that we know all the twists and turns and shocks of this film but can still watch it with complete satisfaction speaks to the brilliant craftsmanship of all involved. Will forever stand the test of time.

@@Guiltyconscience83😄 I can relate to that! For me, it was also just as scary, if not more, when it was revealed that Norman was "Mother". At that point, I had never seen a man dressed as a woman and I was terrified by the maniacal look on Norman's face. That was a twist that I never, ever saw coming.

I watched all the Psycho movies for the first time in 2022 and I have to say, Psycho II is probably the best part two movie to any horror franchise ever. I highly recommend watching all the movies with Anthony Perkins.
Psycho is an entertaining movie and I watch it whenever I catch it. Check out Psycho II. It's surprisingly good and took a major chance in giving the original a sequel.
I agree that this is one of the best films EVER! Anthony Perkins was brilliant as Norman Bates! Too bad he wasn't nominated for an Oscar. He should have been and WON!
Nothing. Psycho is still regarded as one of the greatest - if not the greatest horror film ever made. As far as I'm concerned, Psycho is the Citizen Kane of the horror genre.
My 2nd favorite movie of all time! It gives me such comfort and nostalgia from watching it so much growing up ❤
And Psycho II is one of those badly underrated sequels that have a lot of wor- to do to live up to the first film but does better than you expected. Anthony P has a lot of fun with Norman Bates too!

Psycho Trivia - If anyone is interested, Anthony Perkins stand- in "Burt" in Psycho, can be seen from behind at 9:10 here for maybe four seconds when Norman Bates knocks Sam Loomis out with an object in the parlor. This stand-in has a more medium to stocky build than the taller, lankier Perkins. They must have had to reshoot that scene , for some reason, as an insert after Perkins left production. At the 1979 American Film Institute (on UA-cam), Perkins joked that his stand-in "Burt can take the rap for that shower scene". He may have gotten the name of his stand-in correct, but he had the wrong scene. Perkins was the first actor finished with filming and had gone to NY to be in the Broadway show Greenwillow. The shower scene was the final scene filmed, taking a full week. Mrs. Bates was played by two women- stuntwoman Margo Epper, who was the silhouetted figure approaching the shower to rip the curtains open, then it was actress Ann Dore, with the knife in the rest of the scene. Playboy model Marli Renfro is the one who Perkins dragged from the tub, wrapped in the shower curtain, and placed in the trunk of the '57 Ford. So the last part of that scene would have to have been shot before the shower scene, since Perkins hadn't left for Broadway show yet.
Here's an example of just how significant this movie really is; I took a college-course a few years ago where we were instructed to study "genre theory", using THIS film alone as a subject! There was even an experimental art-installation that involved a wall of tv-monitors showing a slowed-down, frame-by-frame breakdown of JUST the shower-scene! =)
The artist Douglas Gordon has done a lot of art using Psycho. 24hour psycho is one piece. Amazing work.

One of my favorite horror films. Hitchcock took a low budget (barely $1M in 1959) and made a creepy thriller with such minimalism. Anthony Perkins will always be the Norman Bates, but Freddie Highmore did the part justice for “Bates Motel”, Bernard Herrman’s score has transcended its original film into a pop culture icon & the twist of course is a cultural osmosis plot point known by all even if not seen

I just rewatched yesterday and still a masterpiece. The ending still gives me chills on how Norman's face dissolves into his mother's face.
i don't recall seeing the dissolve/cross-fade the first times i saw it, but when i finally did, !WOW!
Honestly, Psycho 2 is a pretty good sequel. I don’t remember much of the third one but Psycho 4 wasn’t bad either.

Psycho || and Scarface both released in 1983. Two movies of different violent genres virtually revolutionized genre-filmmaking!
Robert Loggia was blessed to be part of them.
The first time I saw this movie, I was probably 7 or 8 years old. It was on the old channel 11, WPIX here in NY- right in the middle of a Saturday afternoon. I guess it was cheap for the tv station to acquire? My dad watched it and tried to cover my eyes during the "scary parts", but then he couldn't figure out why I never wanted to take a shower...
It's great to discover your channel. I believe psycho is one of the best movies, but I also want to compliment your production covering it. I truly appreciate the high quality video from beginning to end. Your script covers everything interesting about the production, and the video is well edited. Bernard Herrmann's brilliant score is indeed a driving force, practically a character in itself. One interesting fact you omitted, or perhaps I just missed, is that the score is written for an orchestra of strings only. No wind instruments were used at all.
I remember seeing this movie the first time unspoiled and the first 40 minutes seemed to have so much tension and they a feel good release with the dinner scene only to be shocked during the shower scene. I was so confused that they killed off the star of the movie so early and it created an unease throughout the movie as you did not know who, if anyone, would make it out alive. Subsequent viewings made the unease even worse when you knew what was going to happen. And the score helps.
For years I though I was misremembering the skull image until I was able to get the movie on home video and rewind the scene.
This movie has some incredible staying power as it would pop up over and over again in the theaters in the late 60s and early 70s.
Hitchcock wasn’t alive for the sequel but his influence is felt in the cinematography
I have the bluray steelbook of this one, it's amongst my most prized in my collection. A true masterpiece in every way. and PS, it's Vera MILES (As in 100 miles per hour) not Mills. As for Anthony, he's a master at being a nutter. From a serial killer in THE FOOL KILLER in 1965 (Another masterpiece) to a psychotic street preacher in Crimes Of Passion with Kathleen Turner, no one does crazy better than Anthony Perkins.

Great video, but I was surprised there was nothing said about the actual shooting of the shower scene and how you technically never see the knife come into contact with the actress' body. I read a book about the making of Psycho that was really informative. Can't remember the name of it, but it's totally worth reading if you like this movie.
Marli Renfro is the name of the nude Playboy model who was hired to block the shower scene. Hitchcock said he "shot some of it in slow motion, so as to cover the breasts." When you don't see Janet Leigh's face in the shower, it's Marli Renfro. Her main contribution for the scene was that she was the one dragged out of the tub by Perkins, placed on the shower curtain and placed in the trunk of the car.
Vera's name is MILES not Mills. She was a great actress
She is still alive at 94

Oh he had an even more violent horror film planned called “Kaleidoscope”, but due to how gruesome it would’ve been Hitchcock abandoned the project and the studio refused to fund such a film. “Frenzy” was kind of the compromise

I like the psycho movie's. I really liked psycho and psycho 2 the most. I honestly liked 3 and the beginning as well but my favorite one's are 1 and 2. I really like anthony perkin's as norman bate's. I never watched the show bate's motel yet but eventually want to check it out.
The book was based on the rumors, not the actual case, is the only thing I have to add to this. I love this movie as well and your story fits perfectly with the behind the scenes I saw and adds some great information missing there.

Idk if you forgot to mention, or i didn't hear it cuz i'm at work. But there was pilot show for Bates Motel that was released in 1987 that had promise as well.

🤔 Some viewers had *sympathy* for Norman Bates??? I fist saw this movie as a child and I could tell from the start that he was weird and trouble. He scared me from the beginning.
it was hitchcock's intention to cast anthony for the role because he was young and handsome while norman in the novel was the complete opposite so we would have sympathy for him

Hitchcock was the one who brought more fame to Robert Bloch than he would have had with that pulp novel. And the vast majority agree that Joseph Stefano made the story much better material for a classic, especially working together with Hitchcock..
you got to love how stupid the hollywood studios are they want nothing to do with a movie...it gets made and becomes a success no matter the movie and they have to be kicking themselves for turning it down.
This is one movie that definitely stands the test of time . My father watched in theaters and loved it . I watched it growing up and loved it then my kid's watched it a few years ago and liked it . I find that to be amazing . And imagine with everything against him the set of balls Hitchcock had to have to make this masterpiece. The remake was trash though , not sure what everyone involved in that turd was thinking.
Wonder if psycho 5 will ever happen? Norman does have a child (in psycho 4 norman's wife is with child.) So itbis possible to make psycho 5 about the child of norman or children. It is posdible that norman could of had another child with his wife after psycho 4.

What do you mean what happened to it? Nothing happened to it. It is an older movie that still is referenced to this day. I guess that is just the title format you use, because it really makes no sense.

A good history brought down by an essential stupid error (never mind the bad French pronunciation for Clouzot and Les Diaboliques.....entirely forgivable, if a little dopey. But VERA MILLS???) So disappointing. Film fans may well switch off right there.

In a good Sideny Lumet movie, the 1986 The Morning After, Jane Fonda plays a faded movie actress fallen on hard times and alcoholic. She tells a former cop, played by Jeff Bridges, that "They were grooming me to be the new Vera MILES. He replies "The new WHO?" She answers "Exactly! I was supposed to replace somebody the audience didn't even know was missing!"
I think the first half of Psycho is perfect filmmaking. Even though I think the developments in Bates character in the second half is fascinating, but I really think that they needed to scenes setting up Marians lover and sister. It just made the second half less interesting to me. They don’t have that same connection to Bates character that you sense with Marian. As well, I wished they didn’t break down Normans mental condition at the end. They should’ve left it more mysterious. Vertigo is arguably my favourite film of all time though.
But nonetheless, Psycho is an absolutely fascinating film with unending complexity with only the slightest flaws.
