The vocals are easier to digest when you view it as another instrument. Having the lyrics to to read while listening is the best way to do it, cuz Will, the vocalist, is an absolute poet with his lyrics

My experience with this genre is that the beauty comes over multiple listens. 1st time listen to it as an instrumental song, 2nd read the lyrics while listening and find the right tempo. 3rd+ time sing along and appreciate the emotions that comes from deep thoughts, emotions and the reward of time invested into a song/album.
Fits great while doing tasks that requires focus as the vocals aren't as distracting as clean vocals.
First time viewer here and I hope you've not been discouraged by this limit cause I get the feeling right away that I think you'd appreciate the lyrics and the songs with a couple more listens.
Also you're in for a treat with Pain remains trilogy (All three should be listened to in one sitting as they have seamless overlaps, lyrics recommended as it's pretty great story telling. The music video can help with connecting the lyrics and their live recording of the trilogy is great cause you can really see the band being proud and showing of their skill as musicians either is a great reaction)
    Keep it up!

That's the beauty of harder metal vocals, it's a viceral and primal feeling you get from them. Plus it takes a crazy amount of skill to be able to do them. People that say it's just 'screaming' just shut down the whole skill immediately. There are so many techniques and sounds you can make and Will Ramos can manipulate his vocals with precision as per this song. The more you listen, the easier it gets and you can then start to understand the lyrics more. But death metal and deathcore as a whole appeals to that primal/animalistic side that you just don't get anywhere else in music or society, that's why so many people see listening to metal as a release, much like therapy basically. There's nothing better than cranking up some brutal metal and jamming to it in your car, afterwards you just feel much lighter and happier.

Being able to read the font is kind of the same as being able to understand the vocals. The more you listen, the more you’re able to understand and pick up syllables and certain enunciation from vocalists. It’s like learning to ride a bike, the more you listen the more you’ll start to fall in love with it. I didn’t always like this heavy of music, but over the years I find it’s all I want to listen to.

I used to laugh at this genre of music when I first heard the vocals. However, I loved the music. The more I listened because of the music, the more I started to love the crazy vocals as well. 🤘 This all started about 15yrs ago for me. I had and felt a deep connection with these heavier genres... Unlike, any other genre of music. Even if i couldn't make out the words in the beginning, the music as a whole spoke to my soul, I guess. 🤘 Love that you reacted to them!! It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, to say the least.

You can do this too. Start with a haaa sound in a whisper. Find the rage where you can force it out. Open your throat and your gut for a deeper tone, for a screech, do the opposite. What I did was took a shot of maple syrup. Maybe a few. This coats your throat. The shape of your mouth and tongue also dictates the pitch.
People don’t realize how difficult it is to perform just the vocals let alone changing pitch as frequent and quick as this.

Lorna Shore took me a little bit to get used to, even as someone who has listened to metal for a while. This is still not a genre of metal that I choose to listen to often otherwise, but I've been listening to Lorna Shore daily for months now. Will's vocals are on another level, everyone in the band is amazing, and they are so good at weaving in melodic elements that just make everything even more fantastic. It's totally fine if something just isn't your thing! Give it a chance with the lyrics pulled up though, there is some great lyricism in some of their songs, and you can hear the words somehow like magic after reading them. Also, that Gollum impression was fantastic!

Subscribed just to make sure I dont miss if you do more Lorna Shore, I find it fascinating to see the "un-initiated" react to this type of music and vocals. The fact you felt the soundscape was interesting even tho you didn't enjoy the vocals tells me you are worth a follow. I am an old metal-head, turning 50 later this year, and the way I see these kind of vocals is more of a symbolisation of a feeling or emotion, rather than direct vocals. Sounds made to express a feeling, rather than the actual words, even if they are well written and deep themselves. Hope you don't give up on this journey of exploring alternative art forms.

  • @hearteyescantlose
    @hearteyescantlose 2 години тому +1

Hey @TeddyGreyOnStuff, not sure if you actually read this entire thing but I spent the past few days checking out your journey and I may have smoked a little too much and just felt like sharing. I've been cracking up at this because I felt like I was watching myself listening to this band for the first time. I've been a metal head since guitar hero was a thing, but deathcore always seemed a little too extreme even for a guy like me. I have never loved and hated something so much in my life. I immediately loved the instruments and all of the gothic orchestral/symphonic stuff and jesus the guitar and drums, but Will's voice was way too much. Crazy as it sounds I feel like I know exactly what you mean by his voice being too "spiky". Anyway cut to 2 months later and the EP that this song is from comes out the day after I lost a parent completely out of the blue. I listened to this song again. And then the entire EP front to back with the lyrics screaming alone in my apartment with him and man it was the most spiritual experience of my life. This band literally saved my life. This EP has 3 songs that, too me at least, tell a beautiful story of death and rebirth. What really did it for me is Will's voice sounds so demonic and fucking Lovecraftian I thought of the lyrics being spoken by some cosmic void or something. That probably sounds insane and if you or anyone is still reading this, you're insane too. And your have this foreboding choir in the background along with some of the best musicianship I've ever heard. People are already recommending Pain Remains, and I can't blame them. That album is the first physical music purchase I made since I bought Meteora in the fifth grade because I was cool as fuck. It's an entire concept album meant to be heard from start to finish that tells a story that is fucking awesome, and Pain Remains is a lot more in your face with the emotions and I love it for that, but there's just something about this song and the whole EP that nothing I've ever seen or heard has made me feel. I think I've been binging your content because you're one of the first reactors I've seen that actually pays attention to lyrics. It's more important to me than anything, hence my trouble at first. I know Will's voice sounds like you're getting attacked by a trash compactor at first, but pull up some lyrics and listen to what he's saying and pretend it's a trillion year old god like being with the power to collapse reality and you can fucking hear it from a black hole all the way to your flat. I can't tell you how it happened but that voice went from sounding like actual Satan screaming at me, to something more powerful than I could ever imagine with my puny mind commanding humanity and the universe itself. I think it's powerful. You aren't going to believe me but you actually will start being able to understand SOME/MOST lyrics by ear after you get used to it, but then again my spotify wrapped listen time for Lorna and anything from Will Ramos in general last year should put me on a list somewhere. But I'm writing a novel on youtube like a unhinged lunatic that should have been asleep 2 bowls ago. Cheers man.

Dude I LOVE how open you are. In metal, especially extreme metal, we're used to people who don't cosume this type music shitting on this type of vocals. You didn't enjoy it (for now haha) which is totally fair given you consume and FEEL music as seen in your reactions.
Seeing you vibe with the instrumentals put the biggest smile on my face!
Thing is that with more time you might get used to it because even with how heavy Knocked Loose are (who are the heaviest band you listened to before Lorna Shore as far as I remember) going from them to LS is kind of a leap. This is definitely on the more intense end of deathcore, which is probably a new subgenre for you.
I'm excited to see how your taste for metal evolves now :D

    Sounds like words indeed.
You can watch the one vocal recordings of it to see it being done.
Also, I always said growling is not always just about understanding the lyrics. Its part of the music it self. Screams is the most emotional sound a human can make. And can be happy or sad. Growling its part of the music in metal. Just as much as its about singing and lyrics. However the lyrics in Lorna Shore songs are often fire.

They have a metalcore base now but used to do a more nu-metal style, and even have a softer, more acoustic ep. If you ever decide to put them on the roster, I would recommend
Kill Me, Bleed When You Ask Me, Blood and Honey, Drag Me Down, Permanence in Sleep, The Midnight Sun, Find Euphoria, and honestly on and on, but these I think are good for introduction songs, save maybe Kill Me but it’s a heavy banger so it stays lol

This song was one of the first released when Will Ramos was new to Lorna Shore. They said the song was meant to be extremely heavy out of the gates and to showcase Wills vocals. It’s a good song but very much gimmicky, and overused for reaction videos. As others have said pain remains trilogy is a masterpiece but the album as a whole is fantastic. A lot of the songs can stand on their own like cursed to die or soulless existence. I hope you give them another chance.

My advice on listening to Deathcore like this. Number 1, pull up the lyrics if it's a first listen. And 2, think of the Vocals as another instrument and just enjoy the sounds that it makes

You know how guitars have tons of distortion in metal? Harsh vocals are just the vocal equivalent of matching that vibe. Downtuned or with that squeal effect you mentioned in this video, etc. sometimes it’s more important to have the vocals evoke a general emotion rather than need to listen and interpret the lyrics to reach the same conclusion.

Imho 70% of the reasons why you (and many others of course) can't really digest this is because of the production that buries vocals. I am pretty sure that if you wouldve listened to the one take vocal performance of this.... Well, maybe it wouldnt became your favorite Song ever, but you would at least enjoyed it a bit. Even a lyric video world have helped.
The sad thing is now that your first impression of lorna shore is that their vocals are not really audible you will probably never listen to them again :/

The one take performance of this makes the vocals easier to hear and 'put a face to' so to speak. This kind of music has grown on me but I need to think of the instrumentals as the melodic part, rather than the vocals as we are used to. The singer Will Ramos is such a likeable little dude, and he has done a couple covers of Sleep Token songs where he does clean singing.

when you reach right level of listening to heavy music, you will hear lyrics. Metal in general is listening to shattered drops of music between wall of noise and bpm's

This is subjectively their most popular song however I'd say objectively the best song from them is a trilogy and must be listened to in one go. Called The Pain Remains at 1,2,3. It's poetic masterpiece but you will need the lyrics to understand especially since you're new to Will Ramos(lead singer of Lorna Shore). You can understand it better. However it's up to you to continue with them. If you do if absolutely suggest that trilogy.

Tbf I can fully understand not liking the style of vocals mate, love all your vids btw!!!
it took me a while to like it myself and even then it’s not for everyone! Will Ramos (vocalist) is defo a genius when it comes to vocals and his cleans are incredible! Defo worth listening to more of his stuff!
If not defo suggest trying Bloodywood - Aaj
Or any Bloodywood song tbf they are insane!

So i felt exactly the same way as you when I first heard this and now it's my favourite one next to his version of chokehold!! Will ramos (the singer) is a massive sleep token fan! and he doubted his ability to sing but his cover is siiiiccckkkk and he fucking nails it! And maybe in your own time look up the charismatic voice and will ramos there they look down his throat with actual professors and drs who study the vocal and voice on a "PhD in gonna write a paper on will cos he's fucking insane" kinda level lol the talent he has is amazing and I think for me just appreciating him as a instrument first off was how I fell in love with his voice! Everyone has their limits and it's ok if this is yours but if you're into the function and how it's done stuff that vidoe with charismatic voice is a must see! She actually managed to get a bunch of heavy metal singer to sign up to run experiments to gain more information on how this kind of sound is achieved safely and hope to one day be able to have a course in higher education to study the vocal impact!! anyway love you vids keep being you! ❤

Reading lyrics while listening music like this will help you hear it coherently, Also, Will Ramos (The Vocalist) is a huge fan of Sleep Token and has done vocal covers of a wide variety of their songs, Chokehold is the one cover I personally recommend you to react to, As for the genre of metal (Deathcore) It is the heaviest genre of metal so it truly is the limit, But it is fine if you don't enjoy it, Not every metalhead can get into Deathcore.

I am always a huge advocate for having the lyrics side by side listening for the first time, specially for this kind of extreme music. If you read the lyrics alongside the song, that's the time when you can fully understand and enjoy the music.

  • @ShadowDW

You can't understand him because, like all people who naturally dislike metal, CHOOSE not to. If you were to pay attention to the "animal noises," as you call them, and tried to pay attention to the diction - because you actually did pick up on a few phrases, so you are capable - you would be able to hear what he is, mostly, saying. He does purposely gargle some of it, but that's the genre and the style. But you absolutely can understand what he is saying if you made the effort to pay attention to the vocals.
Not saying you should, or your not entitled to your opinion, I'm just saying you are pre-emptively biased and your mind is choosing not to understand. This is very common for most people, unsurprisingly, and often leads to the "severe dislike," as well as a severe misunderstanding of, and for harder styles of metal, such as deathcore.

3:19 Not blaming you AT ALL, just my opinion from my experience: I always lean toward other genres more when not using good speakers/headphones. I think metal this heavy is really done a disservice by earbuds and especially wireless ones. Actual headphones separate the instruments and vocals better than even my car does. I can see this not being your cup o' tea regardless, but your comments really made me think of this. 🤘
Also, Andy Serkis would be proud. Probably the best impression I've ever heard.
