    Hey GS, I've been watching you for the last 7 years. I begin to miss the TacView after the fight. Yes, I know many of us stopped watching it years ago and I'm sure the analytics show it. But please bring the TacView back to 80 miles BVR fights like these at least some times. Its funny, I just watched a 3 year old vid because YT put it in my suggested vids for some reason, even though i'd seen it. Watched it anyways and saw that it had TacView and I agree that for some engagements, especially these sorts of ultra-long engagements or complicated engagements with many bogeys and so on; basically any video where a lot of guessing is involved.
      I can also see TacView being inserted in short bursts in the action footage, probably accelerated, so that it gives situational awareness to the viewers.

    I know they are using the Super Hornet as a testbed for the AIM 174b, but wouldn't other aircraft be able to carry it eventually, assuming their wings have the structural stability? Maybe, like an F-15E with AIM 174s vs SU 57 with R-37s? That could be a neat matchup. I would say it would be a good idea for the 'Outmatched' series, but the F-15's radar is kind of a beast...

I suspect it can only be mounted to certain stations on most of their aircraft. Much larger than the AIM-120D, which is a little shorter but much skinnier (7" diameter) and lighter (354 lbs). AIM-260 is for 200-300km range and will be carried by both F-35 and F-22. AIM-174B is for 400+km range similar to Raytheon's LREW and will be carried by 4th gen platforms. However since AIM-174B can also be used to strike maritime targets it may stay with the USN.

    • @PhycoKrusk
      @PhycoKrusk 2 місяці тому +1

      Adding onto what others have replied, the AIM-174B also has an inertial guidance computer in addition to its radar seeker. Provided it is calibrated prior to takeoff, the missile knows at all times its distance from and altitude relative to a fixed point on Earth (+/- the drift that naturally occurs with inertial guidance).
      This means that, at least on paper, the AIM-174B can be used as either an air intercept missile or as an air-to-ground cruise missile against stationary targets (on inertial guidance, the missile only knows where a target is relative to its starting point, so it only understands "go here" and doesn't receive mid-flight updates, but once launched, it doesn't need continuous guidance either).
      This mission flexibility is why it's referred to broadly as the SM-6 ("standard missile"), and AIM-174B only when configured for air-to-air (or as RIM-174B when configured for surface-to-air).

      I would argue that Russian hypersonics are vastly overselled in its capabilities, even the “hypersonic” cruise missiles they have aren’t really true hypersonics, they are are hypersonic in their launch phase but slow drastically down later, I expect their A2A hypersonics are vastly overstated to.
      The aim 174 is kinda unhinged when you think about it if it’s paired with datalink and a F15EX acting as a missile truck

    Im curious the size difference between and SM6 and an AGM88. Was a munitions guy in the Air Force but got to work with the F14 and in 2003 the F14 was still using AIM7's. As an Air Force guy we learned about them but I had never seen one in person. We quickly took down their AIM7's and gave them a 120 varient that had not been disclosed at the time.

    Depending on the modle used..(?) the SM-6 could have a very very powerful radar. It's the same 'brain' as an AMRAM but has four times the power output as it has a much larger array to transmit. So it will detect and lock on at much greater range.

    The peak speed of the SM-6 is listed as greater than Mach 3.5+, but if you use a rocket calculator, if the peak velocity is only Mach 3.5 at 135,000 feet on a 45° angle launch, then the maximum range is about 765,000 feet or roughly 144 miles. We know that the missile has mad an interception at 240 miles+ on an aerial target from a surface launch, so that requires that the peak velocity at 135,000 feet to be Mach 5.7. I think that it is important to remember the amount of copium from the Russian side.

    • @grenmoyo3968
      @grenmoyo3968 5 місяців тому +1

      If we want to talk real copium, In reality it's also important that to remember that russian pilots have far less yearly flight time than American pilots. So the US has more time training than Russians. So while some airframes from Russia are pretty capable, the pilots flying them might not be as capable. So the difficulty mentioned about fighting off the tracking of the SM-6 might be quite a bit harder than a lot could manage.
