My Korean grandma was so offended the first time she smelled n tasted durian. After a month’s stay in KL, she left with 4 huge airtight containers of frozen durians.
The smell is distinctive and really strong. For 1st timer I'm sure it's unpleasant. But after you learn to love the taste. The smell will make you look around to find the source so you can get some 😜
Hi! Steve, I like Musang King but D24 is my all-time favorite! The taste hits the spot every time😄. D24 used to be the king before Musang King came about. Musang king has a much stronger taste compared with the rest and durian experts advise to eat it last so that it will not overpower the taste of other durian.
Hi Steve, Michelle here. My hubby bought me mustang king a couple of weeks ago. I think it was a D 24 but it wasn’t as nice as the Sarawak durian. It’s flavour is so much stronger. This is my favourite fruit. I always say it tastes like sweetened onion. With a creamy custard. Enjoy both of you!

Yes, and thats only little part of it, if you go to thailand, there's lots more durian breed there, and most in malaysia also imported, the seeds and off seasons supply coming from there

I like D24, Musang King & Black Thorn. These Durians are origin from Pahang state. These durian can easily found in KL or Selangor (during season)… However, few years back during MAHA Agricultural Expo, I tried durian from Penang island; Durian Susu & Durian Daun Hijau. These premium durian tasted so good, milky, creamy and sweet and I must admit that these durian from Penang can easily beat D24 and if it’s not too much even Musang King… The price range way cheaper than Musang King.. I can’t wait for another MAHA Agricultural Expo 2023.
R2D2😅. I am not a fan of the Black Thorn, but I love the Musang King. They make a great Durian Butter Cake, but make my home smell "Durian-ny". My neighbours can smell the cake baking in the oven twenty feet away, as they come out from the elevators.
The trick I learned when you are having a sit down with a different variety of durians, start with the least bitter and work your way to the most bitter durians. That way, your palette will not be overwhelmed by the durian that is distinctively bitter like black thorn and musang king.
The thing with durians is that you need to take 2 or 3 variants to really let the diff traits of each durian stands out. So do take black thorn with another durian to relatively enjoy the difference and the individuality. Also freshness esp straight off from tree do emit extra quality like liquorish alkohol taste for example
If you ever found one, try it Though the tastes can be varies to what durian breed you get but its still loves at 1st tastes Most people either like it or hate it for the rest of their lives just from the 1st taste(and smell) hahaha Saw lots of european/american youtube video about them trying durian so i guess 80% of white people will hate it ahahah
I like D24 & Musang King for it's sweet & bitter flavor. Blackthorn is too rich in texture for me. Talking about it, I think we going to find some Musang (fox) king today...🤤
I like bitter taste.. Most importantly cheaper than those high ranks durians. You should eat it like you're doing wine testing..chew it longer, Smell, texture, the after taste and so on..like what Steve did. ✌️
Difficult to eat with glove! Yes go straight into it with bare fingered! Lovely video. Thank you! Ps: put price on video to indicate would be good. We all price conscious nowadays!!
Penang has 4 specialty durian which is loved by the locals a lot. The one you mentioned cheaper durian the name is Red Prawn (locals call it ang heh, reason being is the fruit is orangy in color, it is very creamy and if the tree is old it gets much bitter tinge than sweet). There are other 3 more which are Cuppling (local calls it kapri, white in color. Shape is flat and round.), then there is Green Skin and also Hor Lor (means gourd - long in shape- sweet and sticky). Try this and give your comments next year if you are around Penang. Durian seasons starts from mid may to early july. Black thorn is originated in Penang as well. Feel free to review your experience in Penang.
Yes well done. Few people seem to realize that the richest, very best durians are kampung durians. However I am talking about a tiny fraction of the total kampung durian haul each year. If you take 100 kampung durians at random, maybe 30% will be horrible, almost inedible, a further 30% will be pleasant but inferior to even the cheapest of the branded ones, a further 30% will be good quality roughly on a par with the branded durians, a further 9% will be excellent - richer, creamier, and especially far more interesting and varied in flavor than even the expensive brands, and finally.... the 1%.. wow, unforgettable. Problem is in order to get to taste this 1% you have to keep buying a heck of a lot of kampung durian until you finally land it. Paying for an expensive grand is an insurance policy. Every single time will be good, since you (usually!) Know what you are getting, yet at the same time you resign yourself to having no chance of the rare jackpot.
Don't forget to drink a lot of water mr owens sir. I think you should still try and have a taste on that black thorn. It's mightyly expensive but tastewise should be pretty good.

In other words you don't know what you are going to get until it is opened and it can turn out anywhere from foul to heavenly, the full spectrum
if you love durian, come to bangka island, Indonesia. cumasi is strong alcoholic durian and klamunod is copper colored durian. this 2 durian beat black thorn like a TKO.
I grew up in a rubber and durian plantation in Kajang,Selangor D.E and it was D2 and D24 varieties. That was 30 years ago. I honestly haven't tasted the sour profile in them. Creamy, roasted sweetness ,alcoholic scent/pong and a gradual bitterness are very common. There is a big difference in taste depending on its freshness.Enjoy your durian, Steve.
Actually, Merah Udang is probably the second most popular behind Musang King. Some prefer it over Musang King as they find Musang King over powering. Black Thorn is a sub species of Musang King that has the same taste profile but even more intence than Musang King.
You can only appreciate the best if you have tried them all. Assuming that you like durians when you tried it, I suggest people try all he variants before trying the musang king.
@@Steve-Owens Thats because you were never in the Western Province. The season actually started after you left, now it's in full swing. No DURIAN tasted better than SRI LANKAN DURIAN. ONLY OUR POLITICIANS STINK, BTW!!
Hi steve the penang durian (simply known as red prawn) which are from balik pulau is famous and superior. I find the balik pulau ones taste more complex with the so called alcoholic taste and super creamy, different than the typical red prawns i buy in the klang valley. I had the chance to go to an orchard in balik pulau area in penang and tried a few fresh durians. One tip to tell the freshness is the stem of the fruit is not dry.
So flying Fox, are you saying the Small Durian I had was the red prawn? I have to say it was delicious and I am interested to know.. Thanks. Did you see my Penang video, some years back? ua-cam.com/video/S1dhwsjoMyc/v-deo.html
@@flyingfox3766 Most probably the ones that you have tried in Klang Valley are red prawns from Johor. They are different variety from the Penang ones. The official code name are also different, hence the difference in tastes. The real red prawns/udang merah/ang hae are from Penang its nearby area though.
I like tekka aka musang queen. Quiet rare and limited in Penang. For me tekka is better than d24. But penang udang merah more like durian for everyone especially children can enjoy it to. Udang merah got this sweet fruity taste
For tekka u need to choose old tree. Fruit from young trees very sweet and not bitter. Old trees very bitter and complex.. Lookout for black spots on the flesh. That's one of the indications that the durian is from old tree.
Fyi that durian originated in the Philippines that's why the name of that durian is musang a Filipino word means as wild cat fruit since it was discovered in forest in mindanao.
Hahaha..claim as you can. Musang in Malay language also type of wild creature like cat. But mousang king durian formerly known as durian kunyit (turmeric) because of yellowish colour. Its originated from state of kelantan, peninsular Malaysia.
For those trying durian for the 1st time, prepare yourself mentally. Tell yourself you are about to eat creamy vanilla ice-cream with a big dose of whisky and rum. I'll recommend 24D for durian virgins. Once you graduate, go for high quality Black Gold Musang King. It has small seeds and the flesh peels off the seed cleanly. If you like sweeter durian, go for King Red Prawn.
I suggest that you buy durians sold by Malay sellers... because the prices from Chinese shops and Malay shops are quite different.. this is advice from local people
Best way I can describe durian is if you like strong flavours then it’s for you. Think blue cheese. I would say D24 is fantastic entry level eating. It’s a good utility durian and it’s good value for money. For me my favourite is still musang king. It just has the roundest flavour, not overly bitter or sweet but extremely pungent with creamy flesh akin to a thick custard. Never start with musang king just like you would never start with a Stilton and finish on a Brie.
@@Steve-Owens black thorn are upper grade Dorian..only not as popular like musang king..majestic Dorian, got the name from client that we're sultan from Johore..majestic Dorian are rare, because it's not popular as the other 2..sadly,you can only bought it from 1 dealer and the quantity are very small 😓

Creamy, roasted sweetness ,alcoholic scent/pong and a gradual bitterness are very common. There is a big difference in taste depending on its freshness.Enjoy your durian, Steve.
Thank you, you might like my other video then. ua-cam.com/video/S1dhwsjoMyc/v-deo.html. Enjoy
Actually, Merah Udang is probably the second most popular behind Musang King. Some prefer it over Musang King as they find Musang King over powering.
Black Thorn is a sub species of Musang King that has the same taste profile but even more intence than Musang King.
you got to try Black Gold Musang King from Tiger Hill, Pahang.
Thanks
You can only appreciate the best if you have tried them all. Assuming that you like durians when you tried it, I suggest people try all he variants before trying the musang king.
Thanks, here is my earlier Durian video, I think this is a great video, what do you think? ua-cam.com/video/S1dhwsjoMyc/v-deo.html
Yu memang mat Salleh yg sangat hebat.
Machan. It's DURIAN season in SRI LANKA too. We also have LYCHEES in season now.
I never saw them for sale there.. 👍☹️
@@Steve-Owens Thats because you were never in the Western Province. The season actually started after you left, now it's in full swing. No DURIAN tasted better than SRI LANKAN DURIAN. ONLY OUR POLITICIANS STINK, BTW!!
DURIAN D24 IS MY FAVOURITE 🥰
Wow a lot of people like the D24, In Penang I had some awesome Durian.. ua-cam.com/video/S1dhwsjoMyc/v-deo.html
@@Steve-Owens yes the more simple name is red prawn. The ones i had in penang though were huge fruits, very fleshy with small seeds.
@@flyingfox3766 Most probably the ones that you have tried in Klang Valley are red prawns from Johor. They are different variety from the Penang ones. The official code name are also different, hence the difference in tastes. The real red prawns/udang merah/ang hae are from Penang its nearby area though.
@@wannaim6958 penang one usually comes from old trees that taste better
There is an under rated one called TEKKA D160, known as Musang Queen.
I saw that one... I had some amazing Durian in Penang in this video.. It's where I learned to love Durian... ua-cam.com/video/S1dhwsjoMyc/v-deo.html
I think you could not taste the old variety of durian... The forest durian and copper durian.. Soo sad.. I love the copper one..
I have tasted many variety, you may like this video. ua-cam.com/video/S1dhwsjoMyc/v-deo.html
Grade 3A means Musang king size is around 2kg and above. Bigger size means more fresh and more strong tastes
Thanks Kea ua-cam.com/video/8lm4B2wiApU/v-deo.html
Fyi that durian originated in the Philippines that's why the name of that durian is musang a Filipino word means as wild cat fruit since it was discovered in forest in mindanao.
😏😏😏😏😏😏
Hahaha..claim as you can. Musang in Malay language also type of wild creature like cat. But mousang king durian formerly known as durian kunyit (turmeric) because of yellowish colour. Its originated from state of kelantan, peninsular Malaysia.
My favourite durian is Red Prawn (Udang Merah), much cheaper than Musang King or Black Thorns, yet very good taste (sweet & bitter).
I agree, I think I had that some seasons ago.. I will look out for another..
@@Steve-Owens good luck to get one genuine Red Prawn 👍 1kg is ranging MYR25-30 at Penang , KL will be higher for sure.
Thanks.. hope you might like this one too.. ua-cam.com/video/S1dhwsjoMyc/v-deo.html
My fav..D2 and bamboo leg.
Cheers Mike
Nice sunglasses, like a young dude😎
DELICIOUS fruit yummy I LIKE DURIAN
It's just a fruit.... come on....nothing to worry about....very good explanation for those who are reluctant to even try
Just a fruit.. LOL. I think it is more than just a fruit 😉
Welcome to Durian Lover Club
Are you a member already.. :o)
I suggest that you buy durians sold by Malay sellers... because the prices from Chinese shops and Malay shops are quite different.. this is advice from local people
Thanks for the tip..
Question..
Have you try black thorn and new type, majestic Dorian??
Yes but not in this video.. But not recently
The way you describe about the durians taste made me think that I am eating durians right now.
Thank you 😊 today video is ua-cam.com/video/7KjQmkFv4gw/v-deo.html
Steve I think you can work as an ambassador for malaysian government to promote our native fruits to the west
Im from malaysia i love durian,my grandfather got 1hundred over durian tree
Wow that's Old.. You may like this video too.. ua-cam.com/video/S1dhwsjoMyc/v-deo.html
Planning to purchase Musang King seeds to Papua New Guinea in the south pacific.
Steve why don't you hop over Penang, their durians taste better due to their soil and fertilizer used. It is cheaper too.
I am from KL and flew down to Penang for their durians and food. It was Great!
We are heading there soon.. Thanks
@@Steve-Owens That is great! Head to Balik Pulau for Durians HOWEVER I am not sure if there is any now as it is at the tail end of durian season in Penang when I was there. Do check it out!. As a local malaysian Penang has the best Durians.
Yummy 😋😋😋🤤🤤🤤
D24, the OG king. My fav is the common/kampung variant, just because it’s cheap.
Kami xperlu memghantar duta utuk menyatukan dunia kami hanya mewakili Durian utk menyatukan dunia😊
Only Westerners described durians taste like other fruits. 😅. Us, local people while eating will describe the durians as brandy tasting..overly sweet or bittersweet..etc. 😊
Said the alcoholic..
The price is higher for mat salehs.. find a local will able to bargain for you
Thank you ua-cam.com/video/S1dhwsjoMyc/v-deo.html
Hi Steve, which restaurant are you a chef at currently?
