When I got out of the Army in 1973, I had a couple dozen pairs of great olive drab (OD) green double soled wool socks and two great OD green winter wool sweaters. Three years of having to wear OD green was enough for me, so I did the same thing. I died them dark navy blue and wore them on cold days going to college on the GI-Bill. It took more die than you used, to move them from OD green to navy blue, but it worked.
Excellent. Thank you for sharing this. Other videos on how to dye jeans are all trying to achieve a dark look. All I wanted was to be able to refresh faded mid-blue jeans.
Glad it was helpful! Yes exactly, just to give an ink wash or fresh look. If you want to totally change colour you need much more packets of dye, and darker colours. Thanks for watching and hope your denim project works out 👍
Yes it's what I wanted. A fresh ink wash look. Can add more dye if you want it darker. Thanks for watching 👍 Philippines Season 4 playlist ua-cam.com/play/PLWw-_AGo_PBgLYzoPnHgteY9F0sghtb3D.html
Depends how much dye you use. This was 1 packet which gave the nice "ink wash" look. If I used 2-3 packets and added black it would have been much stronger or changed the colour. Hope yours works out 😎
The dye did slowly fade when I used the washing machine with detergent. Not too bad. I actually rushed the project for the video. Ideally I would have rinsed them in cold water. Hold off using the machine with detergent until they really need a proper wash. I'm wearing the jeans in this Vlog ua-cam.com/video/d2bPPcfJJG4/v-deo.html I haven't used a dye fixative product. But good point. Worth a try and may reduce colour bleeding and fading. My goal was the 'ink wash' look. Not to totally change colour. So I'm happy with the result. I would use a darker color if I did it again. Give your own project a try for fun. Hope that helps. 👍
Initially Yes. The final wash after dying removed any excess dye. I washed them with other dark clothing when I do laundry, no problem. Best to separate light and dark clothing when washing 😉👍
No. After the dye process it will come up a lighter shade anyway. Also color fast from the first normal wash with detergent. Some of it will run off over time. Hope that helps. Give it a try 👍
Not really, a few hours is enough. The fabric cannot hold all the dye. The dye process will be in the first 30 mins. If you let it soak without movement, it can cause streaks or uneven dye. I didn't mind as it would add to the denim style. If you want to go really dark, I'd mix navy blue with black dye. That way its stronger. You could also try boiling it in a big pot on the stove. A store lady said she found that was the strongest and fastest method. Hope that helps =)
Hi, I've read reviews on amazon that the dye runs afterwards for upto 5 washes. Please can you clarify if the dye runs in the machine after several washes. Thanks.
No it has not run. This is the 2nd pair of jeans I've redyed. The first pair are still going strong after years of use. Mind you I don't wash them every week. Just when they are dirty. Any garment can fade over time. I separate my washing into light and dark colours. So even if a garment is colourfast it won't stain a lighter one. You can see me wearing the current blue wash jeans in the link below =) ua-cam.com/video/d2bPPcfJJG4/v-deo.html
i was thinking about doing this with a pair of distressed jeans, that have alot of colored stitching on it. Do you know if this will dye the stitching and frayed parts as well?
Yes it will dye the frayed and worn fabric. But usually not the stitching. Unless your stitching is white or very light color. I did this on my own distressed blue jeans. The stitching is yellow color and did not take the dye. Only the distressed and frayed fabric took the die. Turned out great. Nice 'ink wash' look. Hope that helps 👍
Hope you're joking. That sounds silly. Army Camo Uniform (ACU) is a generic acronym. I showed US Army Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP), digital grey. Regarding how digital camo works is 2 fold: Breaking up the object silhouette; and blending in with surroundings. The digital pattern confuses the human eye and brain, so it can't identify the object silhouette. Such as the outline of a person. The digital camo makes the user look blurry from a distance. And if the colours can match the terrain they can help blend in. I showed both in the video. The digital camo pattern is excellent. The only issue with UCP is the colours. US Navy AOR2, or Marine MARPAT camo are good examples of practical colours. The Army and Air Force use Operational Camo Uniform (OCP) now. Previously codenamed Scorpion W2. It was developed with Crye before MulitCam, which is why it looks similar. Crye MultiCam is also approved OCIE.
It's the same as I described above. The further away the more effective any camo pattern is. It's nothing new, tanks have been camouflaged before. Look it up. The video was on dying jeans. You don't have to like or agree on camo. That's a separate topic. You've had your say. Go to a dedicated forum on the topic, there are many. That way you can chat about camo with liked minded people. Stop wasting both our time and energy here.
Thanks appreciate it. Yes it should. But might want to buy some bulk regular salt so you have enough. Good luck with your dye project. Hope that helps 😉👍
I have a denim jacket that i just bleached to make lighter i want it to be a vibrant but light colour, Its colour right now is lighter but its dullish. Is there a way to make it a kind of sky blue type colour? should i fully bleach it till its white and then dye it with a new colour?
I would use Royal Blue like what I did in the video. It will only add a lighter shade of dye. So if your jacket is already lighter or dull, it will work well. You just have to choose what colour you like. It will only come out darker if you use extra packets or add darker dyes. Hope that helps 😎
Don’t know if you’d still reply after 2 years but I have light washed denim an I wanted to dye them a dark wash. An I’m to scared to dye them incase I ruin the jeans and I don’t want the colour coming off in the wash everytime cos tht jus sounds awful. And the whole process jus seems lengthy.. is it worth it?
I try to reply all comments when I'm free hehe. I liked it and worth it for me. I was not trying to totally change colour. Went for a fresh 'ink wash' look to show different shades of blue. If you want to change colour you will need much more dye. Give it a try if you're bored at home 😉👍
I'm not sure exact design. You could try just dipping that section in dye. Or use the liquid dye and carefully pour it onto that area. Let it soak in and dry for couple of days. Then hand wash it to remove any excess. All dyes can naturally run after washing. Otherwise dye the whole thing like I did. It will come up a lighter shade after washing. You need several packets of dark dye to permanently change the colour. Hope that helps and good luck with your project.
Yes any natural fabric like cotton or wool. Check to see what the material is. You may also want to use more dye or a darker colour like navy blue. Hope that helps 👍
You did a good job B. Here in the US specially on summer lots of young people wear these old looking jeans with lots of scissor cuts by the knee and some cuts too at the back of the jeans. Look old and ugly but they buy it from the stores and sometimes cost them more than a hundred dollar for an ugly pair of jeans. I'm from old school, nowadays clothes are getting weirder looking. Thumbs up friend. 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍
Haha I agree the fashion thing can get a bit weird. If its hot I wear shorts, or light weight hiking pants. Designer labels here can be $200 for blue wash or ripped jeans. I like this better as they are already stretched out and comfortable ;)
Ask around. I'm not sure where you are located. You can often find dyes in fabric stores, pharmacies, drug stores, or general department stores. Hope it works out 😎👍
Usually not. Rubber cannot hold ink or paint. If they are white you might notice a little color tinge. But it will wash or fade off. Denim sneaker would be cool, cotton fabric works best. Hope it works 😉✌️
Thanks, they are great jeans hehe. But if you want a fatigued or faded look that is easy. Use fine grit sandpaper and or bleach. Any fabric will naturally fade over time. So my jeans will look even better from normal wear and tear 😉
You did the right thing. That way the dye really soaks in before washing. Yes some of the excess dye will run off. Wash your pants separately and it should be fine.

yes yes, thank you! i found overalls that fit me PERFECTLY, but the brighter colbalt blue (achieved in this video) is trendier, so this is helpful
Glad you liked it and you're welcome. Thanks for watching 👍

Thank you. Hope yours works out. Try mixing black and navy blue. Usually dye colours will finish a lighter shade. But will still add colour 😉
did the dye wear off quickly? would you recommend buying a dye fixative to save money in the long run (not as many times you have to dye it)?

Would a dyed pants ruin other clothes if they were to be mixed in a washing machine?
Initially Yes. The final wash after dying removed any excess dye. I washed them with other dark clothing when I do laundry, no problem. Best to separate light and dark clothing when washing 😉👍
Nice colour...
Glad you liked it and thanks for watching =)
If i wanted a lighter color would you suggest just adding less dye? Thanks!
No. After the dye process it will come up a lighter shade anyway. Also color fast from the first normal wash with detergent. Some of it will run off over time. Hope that helps. Give it a try 👍
what if you let it soak for months does the dye gets real darker to navy blue maybe?
Not really, a few hours is enough. The fabric cannot hold all the dye. The dye process will be in the first 30 mins. If you let it soak without movement, it can cause streaks or uneven dye. it is really very beautiful great job. Could you please tell me which jeans color you used. I am going to dye my jeans the same color. Thanks.
Thank you. Dye color was "Royal Blue". Whatever brand you use, just make sure you follow the instructions ;)
Interesting! It looks new again.
Was happy to finally do this little project. Really like the blue wash look. Better than a designer label hehe ;)

Aren't you supposed to use a second material to "fix" the dye?
The instructions didn't say anything about that. But good feedback, I've not heard of that method before.
