- DT175MX 1980 First start after 'light restoration'..ahh the smell of two-stroke! Special thanks to Matt and Jason of
J & M Turners (quadshop.com) in Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire for all their help with the genuine Yamaha parts. Matt of Benham Bodyworks in Calne who painted the barrel, head and exhaust system and Gary Vardy of Vardy Racing in Swindon who helped with the engine...oh and Peter Lee who kindly lent me his HD camera to shoot the video!
Wow it’s in pristine shape, love the tank graphics. I own 74 DT 175 that’s in blue, idles exactly the same way. ❤
Thank you for your kind comments, condition of bike is Many many hours of work! . The stripes denote the year on these DT's so, 1980 and the reason I bought this on was for the pure sound of a Yamaha DT two-stroke... can't beat it !
Absolutely beautiful bike. The bike I drooled over as a teenager.
Thank you for the kind words, my brother owns the bike now and will be delighted with the comment !
Had a 1979 dt125 competition yellow...loved that awesome bike

I had one of these as my first bike,it was an X reg, the facelift model with the DT logo on the tank in pure white, how I wish I still had it today

@W7OODEY
many apologies for delay in reply as i lost my youtube login i.d..doh !
thanks for your comments, i too had dt,s and lc's and i did regret selling them all
i will need to sell this though as i have now acquired a 350lc...my next project
will post a video of that as soon as it's done
@thumper444
yep, you just don't get that from modern four stroke bikes, it's only two-stoke that follows you around
i think the best smell depends on what quality two-stroke oil you use, i use silkolene and i think
the smell of that is quite addictive. in olden times..back in the day the best smelling oil was castrol
R30, not so good in autolube but just the best..happy memories and thank you for your comment
muchas gracias!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wasnt aware Yamaha Made a DT175MX.. Are you sure its not just a DT175? They also made a MX 175, sans the lights. Very nice bike you have.
They had different names in different countries.
Yeah, and there are a lot of them made over the years. Some never made it to the USA, so some models are all new when you see them. Then you ask, "What in the world is that"? LOL

Well, in France we had an almost identical bike but with a 125 cc engine and it was called DTMX 125. I'm pretty sure it was only available in a few countries. It was made because of displacement categories. But for the name I have no idea. Why do you guys have Yamaha FZ07 and FZ09 and everywhere else it's called MT07 and MT09. Maybe it doesn't sound good to american.
+Mojo believe me, its confusing. You are using a perfect example. the FZ series bikes are MT series bikes..back and forth. But not really that different.
As far as the DTMX125, I dont think those actually were sold in the USA. The DT/MX175 and DT/MX250 were, and so did the DT/MX100. The MX bikes were strictly offroad, and the DT`s were dual sport.
Yamaha Sold the It series bikes (blue and yellow plastic) in the 125 class, but it was still like a cross between a DT and a MX. I owned a 1980 It 125.
It had a odometer, headlight and tail light with a brake light, but no turn signals speedometer or battery.
I guess Yamaha is always doing market research to see what is popular in a particular area, and maybe the names are different to help keep the marketing guys from getting confused.
lol
I'm late with this imput however:
MX suffix =
Monocross - MonoX - MX.
A late reply but a beautiful bike you have there.
I've just watched your video as I've pulled out my own DT175MX to ride after years of recovering from ride preventing injuries & will set about ressurecting it from its enforced hibernation.
enamorado
+jose Pr muchas gracias
What rear tyre size is that please
Hi Luke, Rear tyre size on dt's are 4.10 x 18 (also listed as 410 x 18). It is a Very popular size and fits many makes/including modern bikes. Make sure IF you are using it on the road that the tyres are E marked/road legal ! Regards Brian
