If you plant a blend of crops rather than a monoculture you will have greater ground coverage that will protect the soil from the evaporative effects of the sun. Also deer browsing won't wipe out the entire vegetative cover because of varying plant maturity times and plant height. The ground will be 30-40 degrees cooler under mulch and growing plants vs if it's exposed to direct sunlight. Always have something in the ground Jan-Dec to improve soil health and hold that moisture in. You can successfully raise healthy crops with just 10" of annual moisture if you protect the soil. I suggest planting winter rye, brassicas, hairy vetch, clover, chicory, buckwheat, and forage soybeans together. This covers all 4 seasons and provides tons of dense nutrition for deer, turkey, and other wildlife while improving soil quality, suppressing weeds, and retaining moisture.

U can have some of our rain! 18” inches in two weeks washed almost all of the crops out but the crops that are left are to big to have a planter run through them again...so it’s go with what ya got or disk it all up. It’s a tough year to be a farmer
