Easily one of the most exciting additions to iOS 18 simply for the fact that I often hike in areas with no service
Couldn't agree more!!
Finally a video of it actually going vs something on Apple campus. Thank you 👏
Yes! Happy to show it working outside of Apple's campus. :)
5:07 - Yes and No... Yes you are correct, in order to receive messages, you need to send one first... BUT you can receive messages without you sending one first if it's from your "emergency contacts" or "family shared user". And 7:40 - You are correct, When iPhone loss cellular signal, after 5-10 minutes, In order to preserve battery life, iPhone will retry to connect to cellular every 5-10 minutes (depending on your battery percentage) its not a bug, its a feature xD, (in order to preserve battery) but yes, you can manually regain connectivity forcing it to airplane mode and leaving airplane mode, this will make the phone reload the search.
Great feature. The demonstration and explanation were very thorough. Thanks! Subscribed!
I'm glad this was helpful. Very excited about this feature. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Great feature very happy it is coming in ios 18
It really is a great feature. 😄
I hike in places without any phone coverage at all with the majority being solo. I am happy this technology is trickling down to our phones.
This will be such a useful feature for you! Great to see. 😄
Answered a ton of questions. Great explainer, thanks!
Great to hear.Thanks for watching!
I was in the market for a Garmin, so glad I waited. Being an avid backpacker I always find myself without a cell signal. I can’t wait for iOS 18 to drop. This is amazing!!
It really is amazing! Thanks for watching.
Now that iso 18 is out can you please do a updated video? This is huge for me because i do alot of storm chasing and there is non stop power outage when theres big tornados or high speed winds.
We go RV camping and some campsites don't offer WiFi and there is no cellular service. I wish that Apple would maybe allow 2 way initiation to some degree. Maybe those listed as emergency contacts or favorites in your contacts list. That way, if my wife and I were camping and my 19 year old son had an emergency, he could initiate the text messaging to let us know what is going on. Maybe he could initiate the message, Apple would detect that my phone has no cellular service but can connect to satellite, and then prompt my son to see if he wants get in touch with me via satellite connection on my end. If he answers yet, then Apple would instigate a satellite connection in the background so I could get the text from my son.
For SMS users - You can have emergency contacts, and then they can contact you. iMessage contacts will be able to initiate at any time. The limitation is only for SMS - I added business contacts, who don’t have IPhones as emergency contacts so they can SMS me anytime. I am hoping they open this up to contacts at some point.
I forgot to mention in the video, but Emergency Contacts can initiate texts to you when you're on Satellite. I do hope Apple opens it eventually to ALL contacts, but I can see why they're limiting initiations to Emergency Contacts only for now. This is a great tool for campsites with no cellular service! Thanks for watching. 😁
Does it work for the XS Max?
So if I satellite test my wife a simple “here safe” or whatever can she get my exact location just in case?
Can I put it on airplane mode to disconnect from a tower then initiate a text conversation
Please someone what if you are in a connected area and trying to contact someone who does not have a cellular connection? Does the person initiating the message have to be the same person who is not in the cellular area?
I currently have the 12mini. Is it worth upgrading just for this feature?
Me watching this after Hurricane Helene😢 If this update had come sooner, would it have been possible to connect to loved ones who were so desperate to know if their family was alive? 😭😭
Is this for just calling and texting can u also use satellite for facebook snapchat or internet searches
Just for texting!
Maybe they'll add onto this overtime
Definitely!
It is a free emergency service
For me its a big deal, when i go visit family i go through alot of rural areas with literally no service or a occasional bar of literally 2G service. This gives me that peace of mind that i can still talk to the world while on the road. I can't wait for next year's, maybe apple can get mms and picture messaging to work and maybe a small amount of data. Like what if Facebook and Instagram and X and UA-cam can switch to a super lite version of the app that can work over satellite. Probably not for another year or 2 but still cool. Imagine being on a cruise ship and watching UA-cam over satellite while tanning on the sun deck and without the ridiculous data cost of using ship wifi or cellular
Yes, how awesome! 😁
Nice tool. I'm curious about the prices after the 2-year free trial period. Hopefully it will remain free. Would of course also be a nice unique selling point for Apple. Thanks for sharing 👏
I hope Apple keeps the feature free and accessible for all when needed... or at most pay per use. This feature will save lives! Thanks for watching. 😄
@@PimeTechnology I guess it will be a mix. The emergency messages will remain free of charge. For the private messages there will probably be a paid version. I hope I'm wrong about the private messages 🙂
I hope so too! Apple is worth over a trillion dollars. They can afford to offer the feature for free.
Not yet available in the uk as of 26.9.24 sos available
I actually used it in the plane 38000ft high over Italy!
How cool!! 👀 Thanks for sharing!
It's US-only, are you sure it was iMessage over satellite and not location sharing or SOS?
@@kounoupidi it was SOS
I fly around the Alaskan bush; i’ll give it a try in my airplane. Also, I’m walking across Guatemala this month and I’ll give it a try there as well. I wonder if it just works in the United States and not other countries? Thanks for the video.
I'm curious if it will work in the sky! Apple is starting the release in the US and it will be supported in more countries over time.
One problem I can foresee is my 14 pro max will hang onto 1 bar of service even though I can’t even send a SMS with it and I’m sure the satellite feature won’t engage until there is absolutely no service. Guess we will see.
Yes… I can see this happening for sure. I’m not quite sure what the solution is to this.
Can you sms/iMessage via satellite with an iPhone 14 (or newer) that does not have a SIM card/carrier plan? Ie no Verizon/AT&T ect?
No. The phone must have an active sim card.
Is Apple going to charge for this feature?
As of this moment, Apple says it is free for the first two years of owning an iPhone. We will likely see this September if they're going to charge for the feature or not, as the iPhone 14, which introduced the Satellite feature, will be two years old.
@@PimeTechnology right. They said two years on the 14 announcement. I can’t imagine this being free.
how do i turn it off once i have it on?
I recommend doing an airplane mode reset once you're back in an area that has cellular coverage. Turn Airplane mode on, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back off. 👍
It’s the reason I upgraded my 13 pro max to a 16.. bye bye ZOLEO
Oh good its not carrier specfic
Nope! 😄
Hello
Hi!
Wow🥰…. Mind blowing. Hope it’ll work with my xs max and not just limited to iPhone 15 and newer😉 What car is that?
@johangwall okay, thanks
I wish the XS Max was compatible! But, unfortunately, it needs a satellite antenna to work, which the XS Max doesn't have. You will need an iPhone 14 or newer. That's a Subaru Crosstrek. Thanks for watching! 😄
@@PimeTechnology now I feel like an ancestors 🥲…. MehhhnN that was way below the belt
@@PimeTechnology nice crossover suv
It has been a great Crossover SUV. I really like the size of it!
has anyone tested adding an emergency contact or apple family to not have to initiate a conversation, but get messages?
I ask this because if you the satellite user needs to send message to another satellite user it wont work since both of you will not get the message. I am thinking if you add the other hiker as a contract to your emergency contacts or family it will bypass this procedure and allow you to receive messages from that person. This scenario would be two remote hikers or hurricane relief. @primeTechnology
