  • N.B. One error in this video - the front action bolt should be tightened first...
    The action bolts on a MDT XRS rifle stock have quite a bit of free play and subsequently a Tikka T3X rifle action can roll in the stock if your not careful when you are mounting it..
    I find that you have to use a bubble level to get the action square to the stock...
    More information on why I'm doing this can be found at the following video: • MDT XRS chassis/stock ...
    and

    mdt suggests that you mount the action into the stock in a standing position. i found if you dont the the action wont sit right into the stock. when i did it in the standing method, the action sat correct into the stock with no issues. doing it the way you are the action wont sit properly. do the standing method instead.

      I also do it as recommended always used this method for stock replacements. A little bump on the buttstock while holding the top hand around the stock and barrel where the recoil lug is received by the action. The mating up of that lug and the back of the action are the most important contact points. This is also the reason people bed actions at those points.

    Hello, quick question, got a new XRS stock and the recoil lug is not included and the recoil lug from my factory Tikka tactical stock will not fit, did your Tikka recoil lug fit the new stock?

      Cian, my XRS stock came with the recoil lug. I would suggest contacting your supplier and inform them that the recoil lug is missing...

    Have you tried torquing the bolts without a level to see if it's just because the bolts are loose? Like when you torque down the bolts it should take all slack out of the action. It's a machine surface. I ordered a xrs stock, haven't recieved it yet. Tikka t3x varmint left hand.

      Yes, I have which led me to using a level to set my rifle up.
      I previously had GRS stocks, which were profiled to fit into the action properly and there was no chance of roll. The MDT stock is simply a circular inlet and the with the clearance in the action bolts there is a possibility for the action to roll.
      I did thinking about turning up some sleeves on the lathe to take up the bolt clearance issue, but in the end just went with it as it was.
      I do love my XRS stock, which is why I bought a second one. I have one on my .243 and one on my .204.

      @@nicksshootingmatters I have installed the rifle into the chassis and all I did was put it in and tighten the bolts. No level necessary on mine. I tipped it up 90 degrees like In the install video. All good.

      @@fraserlordly2432 , that's good to know. I was able to see visually that mine wasn't level the very first time I installed it.
      One bit of advice, make sure you re-torque the action after your first outing, you may find it settle down a bit after a few rounds.
      From the very first rounds of mine, I was loving the chassis, you can tell from the direct chassis response compared to polymer stocks...

    Can you offset the action on an angle and then try to tighten the action screws? then show the results before and after torquing to full value?

      Yes, will do. I meant to do a video of it today, but I've been busy.

      By the way, it would be handy if the 10 round .223 AICS polymer magazine could hold 10 rounds of .204 Ruger rounds...due to the size difference between .204 and .223 the magazine can't hold 10 rounds of .204 Ruger.

    This is just incorrect, the chassis is designed so the action bolts tighten the action into the chassis. Doing it this way misses the fundamental point of setting the recoil lug hard against the slot in the chassis. Suggest you follow the MDT installation instructions and ignore this misleading video.

    • @nwashin1
      @nwashin1 Рік тому

      I'm sorry that you believe my video is incorrect and misleading... I tried it the MDT before even creating this video and found I had the action off at an angle to the stock, hence why I use a level.
      I will admit there is one error in my video, and that I torqued the rear action bolt first whereas the instructions say front first.
      MDT Instruction "2. Place your action into the XRS chassis and begin to secure action screws, beginning with the front."
      Is there actually anything wrong with doing it my way (other than I should have tightened the front first)? I'm getting the action hard against the recoil lug before ensuring the action is level with stock before tightening down the action bolts.
      The recoil lug isn't tall enough to stop the action rolling, the action is round, the inlet is round, and there is too much clearance in the action bolts....

      Never seen this issue on any MDT or other chassis used across Tikka T3x and Rem700 actions. Your action looks like it’s been painted/cerakoted is there excess material underneath stopping it sitting in the chassis properly?

    • @nicksshootingmatters
      @nicksshootingmatters  Рік тому

      No there is no excess on the bottom of the action...
      I was surprised when I got the stock that there wasn't a better locating method. The GRS stock I took the action out of has a flat section that the action sits on and then recessed for the section of the action where the bolts are, so no way the action could be off vertical.
      The XRS inlet is completely round....

      richy mc, I've just uploaded another video with details of the inlet to explain better...
