I have always loved ancient sites, but have never been able to travel. Books and documentaries always use the same stock angles. For the first time I can look around myself and get a feel for the site, look above my head, down at the ground, scan around me to get a sense of the buildings' relation to each other. The fact that I could pause the video and *still* actively look around was wonderful! THANK YOU.
The hole at 1:47 is also supposed to be the spot were Poseidon struck his trident, creating a well filled with seawater. Remarkably, according to Pausanias, when the wind blew from the South, you could hear the waves of the sea. "There is also a building [in Athens] called the Erekhtheion . . . Inside the entrance are altars, one to Poseidon, on which in obedience to an oracle they sacrifice also to Erekhtheus, the second to the hero Boutes, and the third to Hephaistos . . . here is also inside--the building is double--sea-water in a cistern. This is no great marvel, for other inland regions have similar wells, in particular Aphrodisias in Karia. But this cistern is remarkable for the noise of waves it sends forth when a south wind blows. On the rock is the outline of a trident. Legend says that these appeared as evidence in support of Poseidon's claim to the land."
Hi BBC. I am an educator in Australia - expensive for my students to come and visit. We have just invested in VR Headsets and this video would be ideal to show my seniors the Acropolis and its components. Is there a way I can get a copy of this for download? I'm not sure how this fits into copyright but, as a resource, this video would be amazing....Thanks for any advice you could give me.
Very interesting and I love the narration. I never saw a 360degree video before, so I'm assuming I would need special glasses, software or equipment to view it properly. Can anyone answer my question about this?
We Greeks, have asked the British museum to return the stolen marbles of Parthenon back to their homeland. The British museum denies it.If you would like them back, you can sign up on this website bringthemback.org If signed by a million people then the subject of their return can be discussed in the European Parliament.
ACROPOLIS; A place of fantastic construction and architecture; the place where philosophy and political thought were born; the place where was born DEMOCRACY
