  • Have you been asking yourself: 'Do You really need a second bachelor's degree?', but haven't made up your mind yet? Here are some insights and considerations to help you in your decision-making process. #multiplecareers #personalsuccess #careerchange #secondbachelorsdegree
    In this video I will explain different situations people might find themselves in when considering to get a second bachelor's degree. In this first video of a 4-part series I will dive deeper into the case of someone intending to change careers.
    I'll talk about different categories of jobs: in some cases a second degree is absolutely needed, while in other cases a certification, or course will do.
    Then there are jobs/careers where there is no hard rule about whether a degree is needed or not. I will offer some insights as to when it makes sense to get a second bachelor's degree.
    I'll also share about my personal experience changing careers from banking to filmmaking, and my consideration in whether or not to get another bachelor's degree. I'll tell you about my final decision and also my reasons for that.

    I earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies, but I could not find a job with my degree. I decided to join the military to get training in electronics. I've had jobs as an electronics technician and a computer operator. I got interested in software engineering so I decided to earn a second bachelor's degree in computer science. I've been working as a software engineer for 12 years. Looking back, I think that earning a second bachelor's degree was a good idea for me.

      I just recently got my bachelors for communications and I am struggling to find jobs as well. Not only that but I honestly don’t really enjoy the career options that it offers. I went into communications solely for the purpose of versatility and I didn’t know what I truly wanted to do. I do want to get a seconds bachelors degree in marine biology because it interests me to learn more about the ocean environment and the he animals that inhabit them. It’s inspiring to read your story and journey to where you are now. It gives me inspiration to pursue marine biology and hopefully make an impact. 😊

    Studying is not only about getting a degree, it's also about personality development and finding yourself. So if it helps with development, why not do a second one. Yes, it's time we invest. But time flies by anyways. Better waste it studying than watching TV or stuff. And with smart planning you can organize it around family, traveling etc. But you are right, learning on demand works really well these days by taking individual courses. So you can tailor your learning as per your needs and wants.

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  Рік тому +1

      I agree, studying rather than just hanging around is time well spent (especially if it doesn't cost much!). However, compared to studying, there are better options in some cases, e.g. when there's a direct route to the intended career that doesn't require getting a second degree. That being said, there are people who enjoy the process of studying itself, in which case it's can be worth it.

    Thank you so much for your encouraging advice! I finished my first bachelor‘s degree in visual communication, however my career ambitions have completely shifted. Now I will start my second bachelor in business administration with a marketing track in a top business school. The lovely thing is: I can study part-time and continue my professional career at the same time. Sometimes I am afraid of the age difference, but I think this is the right step for me. I got a degree in Economics and went on to be a project manager. After a few years of it im really starting to be bored and unsatisfied. Been trying to find my purpose (Ikigai) and see what would help make me more satisfied in the long run. Have considered computer science/coding, math, and now material engineering. After diving into each the coding would be very self started and though i find it interesting i dont think i would be happy in the long term. Math is just too plain for me too. Material engineering seems to hit on a lot of qualities i really value and help make the kid in me dreams really come true. Only issue is it takes a lot of schooling and learning things ive never really had to do before. Im also nervous after being so comfy in a job then going back to school and changing everything for the hope that im happy in the end.

Also, are there alternative paths to progress in your career aside from getting a 4-year degree, e.g something shorter, or gradually in phases?

    So I got a degree in hospitality and I absolutely hate the hotel industry after working in it for years. And then I moved into a recruiter position and i honestly just hate the corporate world. Now I’m thinking I should just go to university abroad (in Scotland, I’ve always wanted to move there). I also commuted to college first time around so I missed out on the living at college experience. But, I want to go for archeology and history in Scotland! I just graduated with a bachelor degree in Science, however I am more passionate about Japanese and fortunately I have been taking courses all along till I reached an intermediate level but since it is hard to further advance alone if you reach that level I was considering getting a second bachelor' degree, I'd appreciate your advice!

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  4 роки тому +4

      That sounds awesome! I can understand how interests can change. My general thoughts would be to think about passion (passions can change, vary, you can have many passions) on one hand and purpose on the other (what is meaningful to you to do in terms of career over a longer period of your life?). You mentioned that you are more passionate about Japanese than Science, but it seems to me that you are ALSO interested in science, correct me if I'm wrong. Ask yourself if you want science to continue to be a part of your career in future (e.g. my project management skills and business knowledge I acquired working in Banking became very handy for me as a Film Producer!)
      Specifically regarding learning language, I would say that nothing can beat living in the country, Japan for a while, because language is much more than just the grammar, structure, but attached to culture and philosophy as well. Just to share, I know someone who took a one year sabbatical to study Japanese in Japan for one year. It helped him to make quick advances in the language and learn much about the culture. Of course in light of the pandemic that may or may not be feasible in near time.
      Before committing to getting a second, I would seriously think about what your long term career goals are (what are your plans with Japanese? Do you want to be a professor, research language and culture, make videos in Japan, work for a Japanese company, and so on), and then analyze whether or not getting that second degree is indeed the best (and only!) way, or if there are other possibilities. Once you have a rough idea what career you want, get in touch with people already working in the industry. Start with the end in mind and work back. All the best!

    Hello, I want to pursue a second engineering degree because I studied bioengineering and feel like the jobs I want require a deeper knowledge of industry and automation (electronics). For example, when designing or repairing medical devices, employers often prefer electrical or electronics engineers over bioengineers. This is because they're more interested in specific electrical knowledge, rather than someone with a broader bioengineering background that may not be as in-depth. After I graduated, I learned from experienced people that they recommend studying a foundational engineering discipline (mechanics, chemistry, or electrical) first, then specializing in bioengineering. Unfortunately, I discovered this advice too late, as I was already finishing my degree. Therefore, I strongly believe that pursuing a second engineering degree that complements my bioengineering background would be very beneficial and allow me to enter the industry jobs I'm interested in. What do you think?

      I understand that in many societies and cultures, changing paths is frowned upon. My question is: Have people change paths despite this, and are they happy with their decision? Other people may initially criticize your decision, because they don't know your reasons for it. If you have a good reason and purpose behind changing your career path, then that's all you need. Once you've made that change and proved yourself, others will also realize that that's the best way forward for you. On the other hand, if you stay put with your original choice and end up miserable with it, no one will help or support you. In the end, we need to make our own choices.

    • @norealleehab2043

      You are absolutely right , it is unusual in my country but i have met a couple of people with two bachelors here , though never did i meet someone who graduated from a non stem and entered a stem degree , so it will definetly be unusual , i know that i will get criticised at first but i already was a people pleaser that's why i entered communication to due to ut being a major with very high regard in people's perspectives here and that in turn made me feel miserable for 4 years , being a stem minded person in a major that was way lower than my own capabilities .. i felt like i am wasting my life away in what i study and decided to take a stand , and when i searched i found that biomedical informatics excited me , even though i realized this late , and being scared of telling my father as he has no idea of me wanteing to take another bachelors at all , so a huge backlash will be from him as mother already will support me fully financially , i am torn considering i have siblings too , but as the eldest daughter i sacrificed my happiness alot over the years for it not to be appreciated by him and to be promised things that i didn't get in the end , so i don't want to sacrifice again anymore , that's why i am thinking about it seriously , i defineltly don't eant to feel miserable the rest of my life in a choice i can redo right now and have the chance to change it this time , i am still weighing this decision even though i am now 80% sure that this would be my choice

    I got a degree multimedia and animation 7 years ago, but I really want to study earth sciences and geography. I have also been working in environmental conservation groups for the past five years but I dont think im fully applying myself in those groot root level organisations. The academic industry seems inclined towards accepting those with formal degrees, but the education system in India is not flexible enough to take in older students, atleast the good ones. Getting a (second) Bachelor's degree is more exciting since ill get to learn more about the subject and gather information but a masters degree is more affordable. I am also not sure ill be able to keep up with the masters curriculum because of my lack of experience in formal educational settings, and knowledge of theory. Some universities can offer some pre requisite courses that can allow me to jump straight to masters level since those qualifications and experience in research are valued in this field. I cant decide if I should apply for Bachelors or masters.

    I’m 27 this year from biz mgmt background and am currently working in an industry where I need to be involved with writing / digital marketing / comms work. But also sales. I’m basically an octopus at work, handling multiple tasks from differing backgrounds (sales, aftercare, marketing, analytics)
    I’ve been thinking to seek other opportunities where I can fully focus on comms, as it’s something that I found a passion for. There have been a few times where I tried to apply and they straightout rejected me. Not surprising because they did have Comms and Journalism degrees stated as requirements in their JDs.
    I’m wondering if I should take up a part time degree, which is gonna cost me around $11k usd, but like you said - the time spent wouldn’t come back. Where I’m from, the marketing and sales employees are getting retrenched by their companies these days… so competition, as someone with a generic degree and job title, is really tough.
    Am slated to have my own apartment soon as well, and that’s easily another $20k. So there’s a lot to consider here 😭

      Right, getting another degree is one option that could increase your chances of getting that particular job.
      On the other hand, how many of those jobs have you applied to? Sometimes it's a matter of probability. It's too early to draw a conclusion if you've just applied to 1-5 jobs. How about applying to 20, 30 jobs within the next 3 months, then you'll get a better idea of whether you can get your foot in the door without a matching degree. If it still doesn't work, then you can revisit the plan to get a degree. All the best!

    I have been doing so much research for months on a career change but still don't know where to start because I don't know what I would really like to do.

    I'm already 25 but I know I don't want kids and don't care about marriage so those aren't concerns. Just curious on suggestions for how I should figure out my next steps and even trying out different careers when it doesn't seem possible?

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  2 роки тому +4

      I would suggest testing out the things that you’re interested in. Some ways to do it is to either do a very short course (it can even be online like a skillshare or kajabi course, or doing a small design project to see if you really like it. If you want to test it even further, do a project for a client or friend, because that’s when many people in design potentially get frustrated (doing client work).
      For nursing it’s certainly more difficult to test. But since the aspect of working with people, taking care of people is also very important, that specific aspect is something that you could test by doing volunteer work in which you have to care/support other people. On the theoretical side, you could check out free courses in coursera that offer any course remotely related.
      In any case, trying out aspects/activities is really important to get a feel of what it’s going to be like. The idea is to put together a small program for yourself that tries to replicate aspects of the job. It might not cover much, but can give some indication, at least. One thing I would also definitely do is talk to several people in both of those careers and ask them in detail what they like and dislike about their career.
      I once thought that I might want to be a wedding organizer. So I had the chance to help a friend organizing her wedding (and also my own). That’s when I knew that I didn’t want to do it 😂.
      Also, even though you change careers, e.g to design, it doesn’t mean it has to be forever, it could be just for 5 years or a decade. By inching forward bit by bit you get closer to what you really like to di. And oftentimes it requires several turns and adjustments to get to that.
      Wishing you all the best!!

      There's no straightforward answer, because it depends on your career plans and also financial situation.
      If you are already certain that you want to get the Master's degree and that getting a second Bachelor's is required, what you might ask yourself is: Is now the best time? What is the best timing? Is is best to go back to study right now, or might I gain more insights & information to feed into my decision, if I first get some work experience?
      Sometimes, after getting work experience, one's perspective can change and suddenly new options and opportunities not seen before open up.

    Hello! I’m 27 now and I’m having a growing interest in interior design. I already have 5 years of experience doing PR. But interior design is also something I want to do in the future. My main consideration is time and budget. If I enroll this year, I’d be around 31 when I graduate and wont be able to get a full time job while I’m studying given the university schedule. I feel like my life will be in a setback for another 4 years. But I do want to pursue interior design. I’m just not sure if this is a viable option. I hope you can give me advice, thank you in advance!

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  3 роки тому +7

      About time: 4 years can seem like a very long time. But if you consider that you have a 50-50 chance to get to 100 years old, and our generation is likely to be working into our old age, then 4 years is almost nothing. If you can completely change your life for the better in 1 year, then imagine how different it can be in 4 years - that is if you've chosen the right path to get you to where you wanna go.
      Your considerations of time and budget are totally valid! Studying is expensive, and while sometimes it's worth it, other times it can be a waste of time. This is what I would say, because you said you had a 'growing' interest (and seem to have some doubt still): I would go back and review your higher-level career goals. What exactly is it that you want to do around interior design. Does it require a full, 4-year degree in interior design, or are there other ways to reach that goal? While regulated professions such as in medicine, law leave you no other choice than to get a degree, there might be other options when it comes to interior design.
      Take some time to explore different areas surrounding the core job of interior design and see if there's anything you're interested in that you might step into directly (and get paid for!). E.g. work part time in a furniture/home depot store, intern at a interior design company, paint people's houses, or even spend the tuition money on re-working your own house/apartment instead as a portfolio piece. It can also be a good self-test to see how much you want this, before you fully commit. If it turns out that you really want this, and you need the degree, then those 4 years will be worth it. On the other hand, you might find out that you don't need a formal degree after all and discover other ways of learning, in which case you can save yourself the time and the money.
      Also, are there shorter programs that take only 1 year or 2 years (there are post-graduate certificate programs which are shorter) or other types of courses that you can take instead of the 4-year program? Hope this helps, and all the best!

It just doesn't make me happy anymore and I have a strong calling to get into software (fullstack development). My only setback is that I'd have to quit my full time job; I make pretty darn good money. I don't think age should matter at all. You could try and talk to someone who is already working in that field. That person would be able to describe accurately what the work and career path is like. Nowadays people are pretty open, so even if you approach someone on linkedIn there's a chance they'd respond. As a self-challenge, you could also try immerse yourself in the more theoretical literature and research and see if you like studying it (your studies would be full of those). Another great thing would be to visit a marine biology institute to see what they do. Hope that helps as a start!

      In general, for everything that's unregulated (including arts), I believe that getting hands on experience, as much as possible, is a sensible way to start. You can ALWAYS get another degree, even at 30, 40, 50 and so on. But there's a big opportunity cost to the time and money spent studying again. It may or may not be worth it, it may or may not be the best solution for you - that only you know! I would recommend to research the bios of artists and see the various way that they built their careers. That way you'll get an overview of all your options before signing up for that degree. Wishing you all the best!

    Because of a difference in accreditation, the school I want to go to will not recognize my bachelor's degree. I graduated from a nationally accredited college, but I am trying to get into the UC system in California, which is regionally accredited. However, the California universities and state universities consider me to be a "Second Bachelor's Degree" student, which limits the majors I can select, because most schools do it accept Bachelor Degree students. I want to go into physics, but no physics programs in California will accept me because I already have a degree (even through they won't recognize my degree, which also prevents me from going into a graduate program). I feel stuck and not sure how to move forward.
    Because of this limitation, I'm starting over. But I'd like to get around this limitation if possible. Is it possible to get into a graduate program without having a recognized degree in the subject, as long as I take the prerequisites at a junior college?

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  3 роки тому +1

      Interesting how complicated it is! I don't know what the specific requirements are. I'd guess that for Physics you would need a recognized and related degree, but there are surely other majors/subjects which allow a wider range of degrees as prerequisites. I would try and research other universities, even abroad, there might be more flexibility there. Sometimes when there are roadblocks on the way, it can be a good time to pause and see if that's the only way to go or if there might be other, even better options.

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  4 роки тому +6

      Hi there!
      Two things I would consider:
      1. In regards to pay: Is going after a possibly higher pay the correct priority for you personally? Is there a possibility that with your first degree you may achieve the same pay level? How important is higher pay for you (when compared to your area of interest, your personality, your vision/higher goals?)
      2. The question is not only 'whether to go for a second degree', but whether it has to be 'now'? Can the decision be pushed further into the future? Have you considered getting work experience first after graduating from your first degree? Don't make a decision (with high investment and opportunity cost) from a place of confusion. If right now you are confused, getting some hands on experience (in any job) after graduation WILL give you more insights and open more doors. While getting job experience, you can continue to find out about what you want to do next, in the mean time gathering skills and saving up for your possible next phase of study. You can always go back to study again.
      I hope it helps and all the best!!

      @@shayb3853 Have you thought about this anymore since this comment? I just though I would chime in that (In Canada at least maybe its different where you are) you can pursue a masters in Act sci if you have a bachelors degree in some quantitative area. Actuary in particular is different from other degrees because you don't need it to become an actuary, but if you do complete the program you may be exempt from having to write some of the tests to become fully qualified - Which are torture I'm told. Depending on your situation you may prefer doing the course load and being exempt from the exams over working and studying and possibly failing. That being said if your science degree gives you the background that you would need to do the tests, you could just dive in.

What could my other options be?

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  4 роки тому +3

      Hi there, I don't know what your financial situation is because that is a crucial thing to consider. Here are a few questions or things to explore before you make the decision:
      - How will taking that degree affect your finances, will you need to go into debt? What opportunity costs will you have?
      - Consider making a film (short film or other content, if you haven't). Taking a degree in filmmaking will be much more useful if you had prior experience because then you know exactly which details you are looking for.
      - As result of the pandemic, the film industry overall has slowed down. Will you be prepared to play the 'long game' - meaning that you might not get a job in directing and writing for years and longer (many people in Canada who've been in the film industry for 10,20 years haven't gotten work as Director), like most people. If you are prepared for that, have you considered what work you would do in the meantime that is acceptable to you.
      - Another option to consider would be Canada or France.
      - An out of the box idea: Consider how much you'll spend on that BFA. An alternative would be to spend that money on co-producing a film (India and USA). The film might be successful or not, but either way at least you will have a finished product and invaluable hands-on experience (you can hire experienced people in the industry instead of making student films). At the same time as Producer you will get to make plenty of decision about the film. But again, it depends on your goals.
      Hope that helps, let me know if you have other questions. Cheers!

      1. You can always go back to to study interior design, even at a later age, so you don't need to decide now. An option is to just work first while saving money and consider this for later.
      2. Even though it's a huge investment, it can be worth it, provided that it is really meaningful and what you want to do (not a temporary interest). To find out how much you want this, you can consider to do some work related to interior design. It may be something as simple as working at a home depot, or renovating your own place.
      3. Talk to interior designers and ask them how the job is like and the best way to start a career in interior design, you'll get valuable insights first-hand!

      There are so many ways that lead to entrepreneurship, and oftentimes, having a business-related degree is not a requirement. Have you considered starting a business first, on the side, and then deciding if you want another degree? What I’ve found is that after getting experience in a field, it becomes clearer whether or not getting a particular degree, certificate, etc. is would be useful or not. There’s also the opportunity cost to consider, in the time you study for another degree, you could’ve started your business.

      That sounds like a plan. It’s a bit difficult to tell based on the limited information I have about your goals and situation. Generally speaking however, a bachelor’s would be useful if you want a job in the corporate world or if you are interested in doing research in a business-related field. If you already have a bachelor’s degree and just want to have a foundation to build a business, personally I would prefer doing an mba, because it’s much more compressed and practice-oriented. Still, if your ultimate goal is starting your own business, I would explore other venues and experiment with other things first before going back to school. As you said, even though money may not be an issue, you don’t want to waste time. What you could try is exploring other entrepreneur’s path and see how they started, and see what bits you can implement for your own journey. That might be much more effective. Hope that helps.

      If you are certain that that’s what you want to do, and you need that particular degree to achieve your career goals, then yes can be a good idea. But before switching, really make sure that you actually need that degree - oftentimes people study one thing and end up working in a completely different field. It could be useful to talk to a student advisor or better a professor to give insights about the specific career path. Also, a way to ‘test’ that to make sure you’re making the right decision is to do a short internship related to what you want to do later, or find a way to apply it. Studying a subject is one thing, but working in that field another.

      Make sure you know what you want to do with the degree afterwards (whatever degree you go for), and which degree is most beneficial for your career goals. I would suggest talking to people who are already working in the industry or in the specific job/career you are aiming for. They will be able to give you a spot-on answer. To others here who understand more about this field, feel free to chip in!

    Completed my btech in civil in 2012...now I want to pursue pharmacy in 2022. I will be taking admission in pharmacy on the basis of cet n 12th marks.
    Are my both degrees valid. And at the same time are my both license valid.???

      I don't know. In general I would say that as long as you maintain the requirements for each licence, they should be independent of one another. I would check with the corresponding faculties/certifiers.

      There’s no age limit, the best way to find out about the enrollment requirements is to contact the university you want to study at, all the best!

    I’ll be graduating in two years from IT e-commerce and i’ll be 25 when I graduate and now I’m feeling like IT is good for some people but not me but I personally like designing such as graphic design. Should i apple another bachelor’s degree after finishing the first one?

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  3 роки тому +2

      Graphic design is an unregulated field, and although there are benefits from taking part in a structured program like a bachelor's, there are so many other ways (cheaper, faster) ways to explore and build a career in this. A bachelor's degree is certainly more thorough, but it will take you a lot of time, and isn't cheap. It's one thing if you love the process of studying and being a student, but if your goal is to work as graphic designer and build a career in it, you can explore courses (online courses), diplomas, short programs. That way you can get into the job faster and apply your skills directly when working with clients. But then again, it really depends on your goals and preferences!

      Hi, I worked in the Digital Design field (I'm also a degree holder, BS Digital Illustration and Animation), and from my experience in the industry...it is Degree < Digital Portfolio. It doesn't matter if you studied a different course as long as you have a portfolio showing your art style (if you have one already), sample outputs, and highlight your forte: organic illustration, typography etc. My suggestion is to do freelance work first :) And keep up with the design trend... and always keep on learning!

    Will credits from first degree transfer to second degree if in the same country ? Thanks

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  3 роки тому +2

      Credit transfer really depends on the rules in your particular country, uni/college, and major., so I would check it out locally. In most places credit transfer is possible as far as I know. Make sure to check far in advance to not get any surprises!

    Hey there, my name is Qasim and I'm from india. Really perplexed about should I pursue my second bachelor in Canada because my grade in bachelor's are not so good and cannot apply for Canada in this grade but I'm 23 years old now and want to settle down in Canada so that I can give my parents a better life which they deserve as fast as possible because they're getting old. If I'll do 4 years of bachelor's degree in Canada I'll be 27 then when I'll earn money? When I'll settle down ? There are so many questions. Could you please help me in this situation?

      Hi there, that is a really noble intention that you have. I can really emphathise with this, as we have a similar background in a way. I've just launched a new youtube channel about living, studying, working in Canada, and I happened to publish a video today that could answer your question. A bachelor's degree is not the only solution, as there are other study programs that cost less and also take less time (1-2 years), while at the same time give you access to job opportunities. You can watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/iBejftUlcPc/v-deo.html
      I hope it helps, and will be happy to hear about your thoughts and questions on that channel. Cheers!

      Don't know your name but still I'll pray for you to attain more success this year❤️. While, I had a question in my mind I thought I should I ask you. Pursuing a 6 months or 9 months is not a big deal but if we pursue a degree of 2 year we'll get 3 years of Work permit that would be easy for me to get a PR and settle down in Canada .!!!

      @@UK-Vlogs007 That's true! The only issue is that the 2-year program cost twice as much.

    Should doing a master is better than second bs

  • @kaidrewry4378
    @kaidrewry4378 3 роки тому +3

    Um, I don't think you can call it "a second bachelor's degree." Saying it makes it seem like it's BA no.2. It's not. It's an MA; Master's Degree, completely different than a BA.

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  3 роки тому +19

      I actually meant a second bachelor's degree. There are people who consider getting a second bachelor's because they want to study something totally different. Others decide to get a Master's instead.
