One of the reasons the w800 is relatively more expensive to other comparable bikes is the fact it is still manufactured in Japan.

True, where I live it costs as much if not more than a Triumph Street Twin. I once sat on one and took a good look up close. the engine is a beauty to look at IMO and it really feels well built and felt truly Made In Japan, as it was assembled with pride. If I got the money to buy a new one I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

Very relaxing and thoughtful video , the 'Itchy-Boots' comment makes total-sense . To add a little-different perspective to the 'W'-bikes (I have a low-mileage w650 ) , they were originally 'Only' intended for the Japanese domestic-market . The retro-bike scene in Japan is very-active with incredible-machines of all-years from around The World , mainly British , American and their own famous models . The sky-rocketing-prices of old bikes , led to the creation of the W650 which emulated a 60's Bonneville with a 40's Manx-Norton bevel-drive camshaft .The vibration some people complain-about , was intentional to make it more 'authentic' ,as the first proto-type-engines were considered 'too-smooth' . Kawasaki Dealerships asked for the w650 World-Wide and after 2-years Kawasaki agreed, releasing-them to the rest of the World . They withdrew the w650 from the US when Triumph entered the Modern-Retro-Market , as they believed it wouldn't compete l with the larger-capacity-twin ,( which it was never designed to do) Kawasaki didn't want any negative-impact on their 'Brand' in their 'Largest-Market' . It was only pressure from US-Distributors that resulted in W800's going to the US , otherwise they-too were not going to be offered there either . While the reviewers umm and aarr over the merits and failings of the 'W' , comparing them to all-manner of other 'offerings' , they remain the only 'True' 360-degree, long-stroke upright-twin in the modern-market . They Do evoke memories of the bikes I grew-up with and are such simple and elegant-machines to own, ride and service . Owners may tire of people commenting on 'The great restoration' , I reply; 'Thanks' . I am now nearly 70 , so it must be time to buy another pre-loved-bargain ! Stay-Upright and smiling . Dave NZ

First, I am biased. I own the 2020 W800 cafe. I did put the black storage rack on and a tail bag. Great addition. Never dropped a bike other then being tired in a garage twice, BMW R1150RT, both in the evening after a long day aforgot to put down the sidestand. Never put on engine guards. Also don't do trail riding in the environment that I have lived in the last 22 years of riding. Your video voice reminds me of being a kid watching educational videos. Makes me feel good. I subscribed, as you are assisting me to try the UA-cam as a creator to expand my education in a hobby that I love. Keep up the great work. I also agree on the right tool for the job. Also own a Concours 14 , 2021 that I use for my 3 hours plus in the saddle. Keep up the great work. I Don sell my stuff, so I buy new and keep it for as long as it wants to run. 2000 Dodge Dakota with 209k miles on it. But she doesn't want to run right now, so I am dependent on my two bikes. I did get my cafe at a very discounted rate. Had to travel, but worth the extra 300 dollars as I got it below 7k 💸

Thank you for commenting! I had an 84' BMW R100RTp that I had 330,000 miles on before I gifted her to a friend. The boxer motor is definitely a workhorse! The dirt/trail riding her is new to me, just started doing that in the last four years, otherwise I was tarmac / paved road only. (with very few exceptions). I encourage you to try the creator thing. I've been doing UA-cam in one form or another for 6 years now, I've never hit "viral" status, more of a hobby for me to share my passions. This channel is the only one that I've done that has seen any real traction, but it's rewarding and exciting either way. Nice to hear from so many others that believe in repairing and keeping vehicles instead of just trading them out every few years. You got a fantastic deal on your W800, I hope you really enjoy it!

Hi Frank, I ordered it from the dealer, the stock one that comes on the standard bike. There are some fitment issues mounting it on the Cafe, I chopped off the passenger boot guard on the left side so the stand could retract all the way. You might not have that issue with thhe Street, I dont know. I like the Street version, if it had been available in the US, Id have bought it. Cheers!

      Not much really, I have:
      - high rise handlebars (instead of fitting risers)
      - shorter fenders front and rear
      - aftermarket turn signals and taillight
      - the seat is re-upholstered with the white piping to make it look like a later Special Edition (2016 onwards)
      - i also bought a second seat, that I like to fit every now and then to change the look.
I had an attempt at posting videos on youtube, but I guess I did not feel like the production quality or my ideas where worthy of continuing. Anyway, if you're curious you should be able to see the handle bars there. I never filmed the rest of the bike. :)
Later edit: there is also a tank cover that I like to fit on it from time to time. I like it because it comes with fittings for a tank bag, really handy on longer rides.
Later later edit: i forgot about the steel braided brake line on the front - worth every penny, really changes the braking feel (older models come with drum brakes at the back, so nothing to do there).

Nothing can beat the W800 for one simple reason... the engine is air cooled! none of the other competitors are!

They seem perfectly adequate for low (city) speeds (25-35 mph) but I do really appreciate the feedback on the BT46 Bridgestones. There are a ton of 'twisties' through the woods on 50mph roads. I did my first oil change on my 2022 w800. So far I have added the factory grab rail and chrome throttle body covers. Also own the W800 albeit a Cafe model. I do believe it is the only current engine with a bevel drive camshaft and I do believe the only classic style retro with a parallel twin (360 degree crank) vs an inline twin.

    • @andrewhannam.
      @andrewhannam. 2 роки тому +3

The new Triumph (water cooled) are in fact not Parallel twins. A Parallel twin has a 360 degree crank, just like a vertical twin has a 180 degree one. The term straight twin or inline would describe the twins from Triumph and Royal Enfield which both have 270. Which to add confusion is a cross plane crank... They incorrectly use the term Parallel as marketing.

@@rickconstant6106 the engine terms of cylinder attachment is based on piston travel and crank angles. 360 degree parallel twins have the piston in the same parallel position... Like a 180 degree vertical twin has the pistons position vertical from each other (one up at TDC, one down BDC).. inline twin or straight twin is the relative position of a Cross plane 270 degree since one piston is between it's stroke when the other has completed it. I could go on about primary, secondary forces, rotating couple and pumping loses between them.... The fact is that we have forgotten where these names have come from and everything is marketing...

If it had tubeless tires I would have a W800. But considering the hell I've been through over a few decades because of tube type tires, I won't go anywhere near a bike with tube type tires. This is 2023, and there is no reason why a bike needs to have tube type tires. Cars went to tubeless tires in the late '40s/early '50s. You could get motorcycles with tubeless tires in the '70s. It just seems insane that we still have these nightmare tires in 2023. I have almost been killed by them, I have been stranded dozens of times by them, I have spent thousands of $$$ on towing bills, motels, and dealer charges for replacing tubes after having the bike towed there. I have missed many days of work. On the other hand, I have a Kawasaki Vulcan 750 with tubeless tires that I have put 128,000 miles on (so far) without a single flat tire, and it has never been on a tow truck. It's decades past time for tube type tires on motorcycles to die.

Another thoughtful and insightful video on the W800. A few observations, if I may. The modern retro classic market is dominated by RE and Triumph and for them, especially RE, Retro styled bikes are a major source of sales. For Kawasaki Retro seems to be a minor part of their output with very little effort put into marketing and no attempt to cut costs to compete with the RE 650s. Dealers must stock the W reluctantly, it being such a slow seller. And when did you last hear anyone admit to paying full price for one? For anyone who cannot stretch to buying new, albeit discounted, bear in mind that the bike has only undergone minimal upgrades since it was released in 2011, (yes I understand North America did not get it till 2019). From what I can see, many were bought new by older, fastidious owners and only ridden now and again. So if you find the right bike, buying a used W could save you $$$$. Here in Australia I bought a 2015 Black Edition with 2400 klms, (1500 miles) on the clock. For safety I have replaced the nine years old tyres. I have registered and insured the bike for 12 months. Total cost to me is less than half the price of a new one for a bike that looks like new. Stay safe.

    • @bigbluemotorbikedog

I'm not entirely sure why Kawasaki doesn't advertise the W series more, in the states I absolutely advise people buy either used, or new old stock (previous years that hadn't been sold at the dealer) because deals are to be had! It's such a pleasure to ride, I think in part it's that the specs just don't do the bike justice.
      Keep the shiny side up!

Big Blue Motorbike Dog - You are so RIGHT! I was a great fan of the Bonnevlle Triumph 650 in the 60 ties. Buit it had wrong sides - Hardcore Triumph drivers knows: Then cam Yam 650 twinn and Yam before the twin 750 I mean. There was trouble with theese bikes too. But I loved theese machines because of their looks and sound. But they had their failouts. Now I drive BMW r100/7 scrambler customised and a orig Triumph Thruxton 900 carb 2006 model and - A GREAT KAWA W 650 1999 model. The BMW is great to drive and handle and a beauty - BUT the Triumph is not for a short leg man like mee - and it is too heavy because of the motorplacearrangement! But it is mine. But now we come to the Kawasaki W 650 - THIS IS PURE AND CLEAN MOTORCYCLEDRIVING ALL DAY LONG - Low weight, great track from 1000 rpm - goes fine up to 120 and a beautifull relaxing sound. Great done KAWASAKI and thank you for the a better classic Triumph than Triump could have done!! Because they have not done it!!!!

As bikers we all have a little peccadilloes for our taste in bikes; mine are reliability, simplicity and over engineering.
Not for love nor money can I find an after market fully enclosed chain case, one could find then in the 70's. I don't want radiators, water pumps, fuel pumps etc. I am willing to accept after market electronic ignition, and carry a spare set of points just incase. My ideal bike should be able to let me to change a set of piston rings at the side of the road, and to run the bike with a flat battery. I know this sounds like fantasy, but the bikes I have been riding over the last 20 years fit into this category. Those of you who are interested my bike is a 63 year old, BMW r60/2. major work simply consist of a set of new rings when tired. I can honestly say it has never let me down, magneto never needs attention and the timing has stayed true for years. The r60/2 is over engineered, it has a built up crank splash lubrication, and shaft drive, all ultra high tech for the 1950's. I get a heady 26 bhp out of it and with a heavy flywheel once spinning takes off pretty smartly, top speed is about 80mph can be the cruising speed if I wish but I prefer 60mph.
The Reason I mention my peccadilloes is that I too considered the beautiful engineered w800, well the 650 actually, and it was a very close thing, but in the end I went for a 1970's Yamaha xs650 mainly because of the over engineering of the engine; But up crank, camshaft running in bearing instead of directly in the cylinder-head. But as I say these are my own personal biases. thanks for the video.

Living itself is a risk and it comes down to how much risk our spirits and the life in us can endure.

When riding a motorcycle you become a more attentive, observant driver and you develop the ability to anticipate situations in advance or you won't be riding long. These enhanced abilities and techniques make you a better car driver as well. Yes, motorcycles are inherently riskier to drive than a car but only you can ride in a manner that minimizes those risks. Other drivers are not accustomed to seeing motorcycles in traffic so their unconscious minds don't see you or acknowledge your existence. Be alert , visible and don't spend more time than necessary in other drivers blind spots.
