I tried a TriSpark igniton on my Commando and had serious trouble with it, as have several other members of our Norton club. Having the electronics down in the points case makes for a nice neat installation but the heat and vibration are likely to cause failures after a while, and not necessarily a long while. That is a brutal environment for electronic components. The failure mode occurs after they are warmed up. You will find one or both cylinders suddenly goes away. You'll coast to the side of the road, fiddle around a bit, and try restarting, and it will restart (after cooling down a bit) and you'll ride off again, only to repeat the process a little further down the road. On my Commando I would follow the same test route from a cold start and the thing would fail within about 100 yards of the same point, consistently, a couple miles away. Good luck! Any electronic ignition with the electronics separated from the pick-up will be more reliable.

Hi @ericbergman9701, well that's not very good news :) That said I very much appreciate you sharing this info as forewarned is forearmed so will definitely keep this in mind should the bike lose spark. Perhaps I chose the wrong option ...time will tell. Thanks Again! If you haven't already, please subscribe. Really appreciate it!

@@MadTinkerman I should have noted that my experiences were several years ago and it is possible that they've beefed up the electronics against these kinds of failures, but there's no way around the fact that this is a very difficult engineering job if you're trying to keep the cost within some reasonable range. NASA and the military are prepared to pay a lot more than the average vintage bike guy for hardened electronics! It will not hurt my feelings at all if the current product has been improved to where those breakdowns no longer occur.

@@ericbergman9701good stuff! Totally agree with your assessment of potential issues. I live on the 'Wet' Coast of Canada near Vancouver and it doesn't get terribly hot here in the Summer so perhaps that will mitigate issues, but will definitely watch for this now that I know the potential. Cheers!

Haven't tried the Tri-spark yet but it looks like a good unit. Seems like it's a step above the other brands. I currently have one bike with a Pazon one bike with a Wassell Vape and one bike that I just picked up and isn't running that has a Boyer.

@daveco1270, wow you have a lot of experience with the various electronic ignitions on your bikes! So far the Trispark seems great! Super easy to install and works well, so far, although too cold out to take it for a ride. In the garage it works well. I hope to have the installation video out either this evening (Pacific) or tomorrow. Thanks again for the comment! Cheers!
