  • We are time-traveling back to 1815 to Canada's fur trading history at Fort William Historical Park. This is a riveting part of American history that involves European expeditions across Canada in search of highly prized fur pelts, specifically the beaver fur. The furs were traded with Europe where they were turned into hats, a status symbol at the time.
At Fort William Historic Park, we experience a rare glimpse into this time period to see what life was like. We are guided by Mr. Tate, a Scottish man who is in charge of supervising the workers at Fort William. We even witness a rendezvous, or large meeting held in the wilderness for trading fur. This is a story of survival in the uncharted frontier of North America. Cultures collide here and Europeans depended greatly on the Indigenous peoples for their resourcefulness. Much of the fur trapping and trade routes were done by canoe through the waterways, or by foot.

I know the fur trade was all over North America. But the Northwest Company and rival Hudson Bay Company were both based in Canada.
