Hiking Alone for Landscape Photography

- In this video I go on a landscape photography hike up Yewbarrow Fell in the Lake District, England. I struggle to make sense of the expansive view infront of me, so I turn my attention to a smaller, more intimate scene which I photograph with my Fuji X-T3 camera and 55-200 Lens.

"Arrrrh! This is the problem with UA-cam! Oh, man, every hill I climb I climb twice. One for you, one for me. Come 'ere." We appreciate you, Thomas!
Keep it up, Thomas!
Thanks for sticking around until the end 👍
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto it's very relaxing and enjoyable to watch until the end.
Yes thank you for climbing the hills twice so we could enjoy the trip too!
@@zenphotojourney The invisible selfie stick. That's so weird. How do they do that?
'Every hill I climb I climb twice - one for you, one for me.' Appreciate it, Tom!
I really enjoy the waterfall photo. One of the main reasons why I watch you and not one of the other thousand UA-camrs who work in photography is because your channel feels like a glimpse into your real life and not just a social media image. I think many photographers have moments in which they feel like you did on this hike but your channel is the only one which makes me go "I'm not alone with these struggles" rather than "I must be unfit for photography because I'm not as good as the others".
I liked the minimalism of that waterfall image FWIW.
Meanwhile, somewhere on Vancouver Island, Adam Gibbs walks out his front door. "Bloody hell! Someone's nicked me van!"
🤣
Maybe they should have swapped vans instead? Ha ha!
Don’t worry about not getting the “shot!” I can’t speak for everyone but I really enjoy being taking along the journey with you. Due to my job I can’t be going off to great locations very often, so just being able to go with you is why I love watching your videos. I also appreciate the honesty, it’s not about getting an amazing shot, it’s about being there and experiencing it in the first place, and the camera is just an excuse to go :)
"And the mountains won't remember me" - Peter McKinnon.
Thanks so much for taking us on your adventures Thomas.
The drone shots show just how “insignificant” one is, when in the mountains.
What I envy you for most is that you are completely alone up there. That’s why I do landscape photography. Just my dog and me.
I know some people wouldn't understand but I too love being alone in nature.
So basically you are not alone. It can be hard being alone, but also great.
Thomas you are the B-roll champion. Your hard work is very much appreciated. Thanks.
The thing I like about your videos is your honesty Thomas. At the moment I'm enjoying my photography, I feel like I'm on a roll. But until recently I was down amongst the dead men. That's life!
I nearly cried when Thomas said that he sold the van! But I held it in when he said he had bought another. 😅🤦🏻♂️😎👊🙄
Thank you for always being an inspiration and reminding me that it’s ok to go out, spend the day and not come back with a photograph I love. It’s ok. Thank you.
Unfortunately that's most of my days but I still love being out there! lol
Thomas Heaton is the King of the B-roll
Your videos are the best. I can just imagine how difficult it is to setup the video camera and reenact each scene then dismantle it afterwards. Thanks for your sacrifice, mate. We love your content.
Im typing this on my mac before watching the video on my tv. I know this is going to be a good watch. I received your book a couple of days ago. It is perfect. Thank you for enriching my life with what you do. You have inspired me to escalate my photography skills the last three years. Best regards.
Great video Thomas. Next to the beautiful scenery and great shots from about every angle, I enjoy your honesty telling just what you feel when thinks don't work the way you had planned (oh but you didn't plan...). Hiking is one thing but filming your walks is something extra that you do very very well. Must be a lot of work putting it al together in those videos. Hope you got home safe and that we members can enjoy your next trip on this channel.
Me and my 6 Year old Son watched this together and he said he liked it and it “looked like lightning going down the mountain but it’s just water”
If you could know how deeply i understand your feeling...... thank you for your sincerity.... you talk even about difficult and crisis moments of photography and this is a very big thing! I really appreciate it! Thank you!
It’s been 6 months since I last hit the shutter. Tom Heaton inspiring me as ever man I miss it. One day Tom one day I’ll shoot with you. Life goals.
I love that you've bought a Delica. They're one of those weird vans that for some reason is really cool.
I confess, when I saw the footage I was eager to see what images you would capture. But you were honest and again brought reality about landscape photography and art in general! Thank you for another great content!
That’s the reason we love watching it till end
What a beautiful place. Makes me miss my time in England and Scotland. Thanks for the video.
As a novice photographer I find myself often looking around and not finding anything that really catches my eye. Now it could very well be that I suck at composition hahaha but let’s not talk about that. So I can only imagine how hard it Lucy be for seasoned photographers to be inspired. I do have to say though your “backyard” is amazing. So many colors, hills, mountains, lakes. So peaceful. And you guys actually close the gates behind you. Imagine that. Well done Tom.
No, thank you. Love the hikes, the photos, and the video. Feel like I've done the hike too.
Not wanting to get back up after a long hike. Know that feeling. Thanks
As always Thomas....great video!! Thanks
That was an excellent single image, the drone shots were stunning.
Just two days ago I started my own photography website thanks to the years of inspiration from this channel, I also used squarespace with your code, which helped quite a bit. Thanks for all that you do Thomas I am very excited to see where this takes me.
Whether you get a shot or not, your videos are worth watching. There’s beautiful scenery all around you and we get to see it through you. Totally worth the watch.
The photograph seems like two separate photographs. The gold color is spectacular. Very nice.
thank you Thomas, I did watch from beginning right to the end and loved every second! The scenery was breathtaking - and totally appreciate your honesty and words towards your photographic challenges. Cheers to you! happy travels.
I have fond memories of the Wasdale Valley and the Hard Knot Pass from when my Dad used to take me there hiking as a kid. As a Brit now living in Malaysia, where it's hard to do landscape photography (the sun goes up and down in about ten minutes) your videos give me great nostalgia for 'Blighty, thanks Tom!
I've just spent 20 minutes of my life watching you clamber up and down a mountain to get a less than great shot. And I enjoyed every minute of it. Another favourite youtuber of mine, Mark Denny, taught me the most important part of landscape photography is to enjoy the experience, because you will get less than perfect photos sometimes.
BTW. I'm enjoying your book. Taking it a few images at a time. Thanks Tom.
That last quote tho.... You always make us feel we were there and that is so priceless. Not many of us have the luxury of abundant nearby landscape or able to afford even a getaway from work/survival to do that but with your videos, we can dream and envision one day, many years later perhaps, we can get there.
what a brilliant video wastwater is a magical place
This is the type of video I enjoy most from you Thomas. Keep it up.
getting back to the roots love it !!!
Appreciate your honesty, really liked the image of the waterfall.
Thank you for hiking that mountain TWICE for us. I appreciate your hard work you did for us.
Thanks for being honest! I'm pretty new to landscape and I do mostly hiking and photo like that! It's nice to remind myself that it's not always about getting a big shot. Enjoy the day. No pressure. Have fun!
Now this is why I subscribe to your channel... honest, subtle, less is more, and of course an 'absolutely stunning' image.. brilliant!
Enjoyed this video as always. Thank you.
I do a lot of hiking and could stay hours watching and photographing the sun glowing over the peaks. I love it :)
Great vid Tom! Enjoying the book as well. Thanks
I've been enjoying your videos for a few years now Tom and don't think I've ever left a comment - I just contemplate and absorb them and always remain totally inspired and entertained, so just wanted to say this one time for all your work, wonderful, absolutely wonderful! Thanks a bunch and here's to all the videos to come. Oh, and have just taken delivery of your book and to coin a phrase - Absolutely Stunning!
the effort that goes into each shot man is amazing and you do so very seamlessly, really love this one, one of my favorites I think
Appreciate your content! This one more than most. It fits my mood lately as I try to create in this environment. It’s all about the struggle lately.
You are as ever an inspiration to us lesser channels. Thanks
Thanks for the good work minimizing the wind noise.
As I watched you climb down that steep part of the hill (and up at the beginning, if I’m being honest), I thought of how you’d have to climb back up to get the camera, and I imagined you griping about it as you did it-and at the end, you actually showed it! _This_ is what makes your channel such a joy and pleasure to watch!
I watched to the end, because I appreciated your vulnerability about what I believe many of us are experiencing in some way right now: the effects of isolation and introspection and loss of what we once had or enjoyed. It's hard. Thanks for taking us along on your walk.
Welcome back to the lakes,Tom. Love Yewbarrow and the route you took up but if I want to go with my dogs, who are my constant companions on the fells, I have to take the longer route up, by the backdoor beside stirrup gap!
Fair play to you for choosing it as your first fell back after lockdown!
For some reason, this is the kind of videos I like the most. Thanks!
I like the waterfall photo. I also enjoyed the scenes of backlit grasses and steep hillsides with tiny plants clinging to the cracks in the rock as you climbed up. The green at the beginning was so lush! We don't have that here but where I grew up it was very green. So I enjoy seeing that.
I love traveling vicariously with you via this channel.
Nice vlog Tom great to see you back in the field again. I do enjoy watching your vlogs with or without images 👍
Always great to join you on your travels.. you're always an inspiration.. feels like having a chat with a mate.. brilliant.. Whenever I watch your videos it's clear how much time and effort you put into producing these things. You should be proud Thomas !!
As a loyal viewer from Singapore, that waterfall shot was honestly stunning. That minimalist composition, that moody atmosphere created by the setting sun, I really think it was a wonderful shot!
My wife and I always stick around until the end of your videos. Great video, nice image, and best of luck with the Van. Thank you for the inspiration to get out and hike and shoot.
Great video! I really loved the photo it reminds me of the one you took in I think the alps. Both are beautiful! I can’t wait for the trip as well as a few updates on ur new camper van! Thanks again keep it up man!
Appreciate the truth behind your reasons behind not really feeling it. I feel that way, too, sometimes. As for the waterfall shot, I do like it.
What a great waterfall image!
Yep, watched it all the way to the end 👍
Best plug of your channel so far Thomas, hehe. Made me laugh. Also, I think grown is a better word than changed. Safe travels mate!
Quality video Tom, thank you!
Your videos encouraged me to pick up a camera again and look at my environment differently. This video reminds me that great views don’t necessarily make for great photos but it’s still worthwhile to go out and take a look at what’s there.
I enjoyed the waterfall shot. Whether you get a photo or not doesn’t matter. I enjoy your videos as I’m still learning and it motivates me to get out there and find new areas. Please keep them coming and thanks!
Love the video Thomas. I also really love the photo. I'm right there with you being drawn to the smaller intimate peaceful scenes lately!
Tom, it's all good. Letting go of the expectation of getting excellent images on every trip is part of the journey. Keep it up.
Thomas the amount of work you've put into this video is immense... well done.. loved it
Thanks for adding that last bit. It's so true how one double climbs. I was going to mention that I enjoyed your perspectives and walk by angles. You beat me to it.
Hopefully you next destination will bring greater vision into your current photography style. Feeling the moment is most important.
great as usual. Got Volume One last week, award yourself a gold star. Fully recommend it.
Tom, some of your best videography which is every much challenging as finding an epic shot. The effort was amazing on a few of the angles at the beginning.
thank you so much tom for featuring our grand canyon video as the suggested vid of the week🙃so much appreciated! i hope things are good on your side. the news with the camper van certainly sound very exciting!
Love your videos man! Truly great visuals and dynamic integration of evocative music. Keep up the good work. Been meaning to get into some more climbing. Would love to see you showcase some more of that on your channel!
Really like the waterfall image! The minimalism adds to the picture, and the light makes it so special!
Your still one of the only photographers, I really enjoy to watch on youtube. No matter if you take one photo, twenty photos or no photo on a twenty minute video... ;-) Keep up the work!
Heaton with the 2:3!!!! The shot was glorious mate. And I absolutely love when you talk about how you feel about your images and how you feel about the situation etc. Your growth as a photographer and changes you feel about yourself are so interesting as we all have them as well. Especially those of us that have been photographing for 10+ years I’m sure. That drone footage was amazing as well man. Always a great watch. 🍻🍻🍻
This reminded me of your older stuff. I'm so glad you did this video, it hit the spot!
Hey Tom, another inspirational vid, thank you so much. My heart skipped a beat when you uttered the 2 words, minimalism and abstract photography. I would love to see you apply your very considerable skills to one or the other or, a combination of the 2. I await with baited breath.
Great choice with the Delica, I myself had a Hyundai H1 Starex 4x4 (similar to the Delica) DIY campervan a few years ago, and I loved it!
Looking forward for the next video
Whats a beutiful landscape. great.
8:00 That camp site down there was where we camped on my first trip to the Lake District back in the late 1970s. I recognised Wast Water immediately, even after about forty years - thanks for the nostalgia trip :)
Thomas, I don't comment often enough (sorry about that). Just wanted to say that I always find your videos so calming. Like listening to some melody. Serenity!
Thanks for doing these videos:
1) because it’s good to know that sometimes it’s ok just to not feel it and come away not feeling you’ve got a banger in the bag. If it happens to awesome photographers like Thomas Heaton, then the rest of us shouldn’t feel so bad.
2) I’m scared of heights. And frankly, screw some of these hikes you do. Thanks for doing them so I can see what it’s like without feeling like I’m going to pass out :)
Love the shot Tom, great video as always mate
Love the rumbling Tom!
Awesome video. One of my favorite things about landscape photography is the adventure.
Thanks for taking us to the top Tom, my god what stunning views you give us, imagine this in winter.. wow!!...and I do like the waterfall shot.
Yeay I guessed the new video camera correctly in the last vid! Great video as allways Tom.
fantastic!
I never got to visit the Lake District this year. Seeing it in this video is very much appreciated!
Had a sharp intake of breath when you said that you sold the van. Did a little fist bump when you said you had bought a delica. I have a 94 delica which I use as an overnighter. Bit small but does me. Great little van.
Nice composition of the waterfall, loved the way the golden rays falling on the thin stream of waterfall. Very inspiring Thomas, I like the way you look for the composition which satisfies you and not going on clicking all the views. That way you click only the best part of the journey and you remember all the details of that shot.
OMG the van!!!!!
Mitsubishi Delica!! Hell yes!! a proper rugged van! looking forward to seeing how the build goes
I like that you are taking us through your different stages of photography...even when you think your video might not be that good .at least to some of us is great
In the first 26 seconds and you walking through that gate. I could shoot at that point all day. That's amazing.
Exactly the content I needed. Thank you Thomas! :)
