Troy could easily do a side gig as an audiobook narrator.
I love the way Troy can create this deep, bellowing sound with his voice. He has a very unmistakable sound.
The new Killer Be Killed songs are... killer \m/
He sounds like a sasquatch.
Canadian accent strong with this one. He hit us with "out" like three times back to back
Jose Ortiz Not gonna lie, that part made me laugh a bit lmao
Hahaha. I'm Canadian. I can't tell. Sounds normal to me.
Leviathan is still my favorite of their albums, but I never understood why people got bent out of shape about their later stuff. It's all great, and I love that they have mixed things up over the years. Emperor of Sand gets better every time I listen to it. And, I hope they keep doing what they do. To me, they prove album after album that they are one of the best bands in the business today.
"We can play whatever we fucking want!"
Tr00s are Crying !
I have only just found this band after hearing Emperor of Sands. Their music is timeless. Emperor of Sands, along with the majority of their albums can be listened to without any contemporary bias. THIS BAND ROCKS!
You go bro...play what the fuck you want.
Sing and not scream all you want...
Fuck the narrow minds that judge!
Yeah having an opinion and preferring something is really narrow minded...
if the shoe fits...
The part Troy said about their journey and how they want to sound different every album... I have fallen in love with your whole journey, Mastodon. You guys have taken me on a wild ride spanning years and I've never been disappointed. Thank you for keeping it fresh every time, even if it pisses off people who wanted a recreation of an earlier sound.
1:31 that plane really added to the interview
Oisin McPhillips what about that lovely seagull? - and yes, the album is brilliant!
I fucking love mastodon, bin there since leviathan and I love there evolution , singing all the way with a good sprinkling of heavy for seasoning phenomenal band.
I love how the camera guy acknowledges the presence of the seagulls in this video for a moment because they are pretty vocal throughout the whole interview.
fuck yeah!!! love the new album, fuck love all your albums. i think its awesome how mastodons music is always evolving.. thank you guys for making some of the best music these day. rock on
John Landis You've obviously only listened to their newer stuff, fucking elitist. Listen to songs like Mother Puncher or Capillarian Crest, and you'll immediately come to find that Mastodon isn't "false metal dogshit." I can only imagine the shit you listen to.
The other day I bought some CDs for my newest car. One was Remission, the other was Cold Dark Place, the first and last official Mastodon releases. Hearing them both and absolutely adoring BOTH records is precise proof of Mastodon's legacy. Everything has changed and nothing has changed because in spite of any changes in musical style, all four members/heroes have delivered again and again on each record after a whole legal adult's worth of time. They still retain the key Mastodon elements that have been there since Remission and Call of the Mastodon, and all throughout the Elementals and the 2010 albums. Troy, Brann, Bill, and Brent, and really everyone else involved with Mastodon's uprising deserves a damn Nobel Prize for what they've accomplished!
get that oot like a creative ootlet
I love these dudes. Emperor of Sand is their best record so far
Are you mad
I respect your boldness.
Deny it all you want, but you Canadians definitely say "out" in a distinct manner.
what are you talking aboot?
Just on the east coast (No hate actually love the accent) I find its more or less the same as in america the further west you go. Hell BC is like northern washington haha
Reese Specht Daniel's accent is central Canadian 'hoser' a la Bob and Doug McKenzie. The east coast accent is much different, varying province to province. The French, Irish, Scot and West Country English influencs is much more pronounced on the east coast.
Billy Trespassers oooooot
Eastern Canadians especially.
Great interview! Wish it was longer.
I've been immensely drawn to mastadon recently, and almost everything I've seen of theirs when it comes to interviews is focused on the family of the band. They seem sincere about each other, and really define what to me a band should be, in terms of how they speak of one another and their connections. Saying "we have 3 singers, and we just put whomever we think does this part best there... the band created the music, it's not just one person. Let it flow." I love it.
I respect their musicianship and their music, even if they've got a lot of sludge I don't particularly love early on. Definitely proved to work through the muck
what an awesome guy, is very aware and doesn't say "my" band, etc... he uses us, we, he includes all member which is nice to see!
Great insights and great attitude and point of view on these things.
Bing. Bang. Boom! love the new record.
HOLY SHIT
THAT VOICE
Cheers To You TROY & MASTODON
Love this guy!
Troy, the vocals are definitely not the weak point of Mastodon, you are all stellar vocalists.Come to think of it,there are no weak points.
Good interviewer. You can tell he knows his stuff. Should have been longer
Fucking Emperor of Sand rules...return to form for Masto-fucking-don \m/
Gorgeous man inside and out
Coolest answer in rock\metal. We’re not trying to sell out.
awesome band. great frontman
I think the newer stuff is fucking amazing. Metal needs more singing!!!!! Love it. Metal needs some new giants to fill the gaps when the legends die. These fellas are carrying the torch.
Wise words Troy, wise words \m/
Singing into the toilet voice timbre. (love it)
U HAVE TO LOVE THE HUMBLENESS EH?
Did Troy just swear at the end? naughty boy! I don't think I've heard him swear yet
Troy is very self-aware, and so right- honesty has always been Mastodon's policy, so if they ever did anything for cynical reasons, or to please a select group of fans, it would absolutely show and fail
i just want to say this since this interview brings up the subject to some degree: OMRTS is SO underrated... i mean it has EVERYTHING that makes mastodon great... its heavy.. its colorful.. its CRAZY and its WEIRD.... its so friggen good!!! objectively i think its top 3 along with CTS and blood mountain.. objectively speaking. i also love the production.. its RAW!
I really need a cool beard like that...but i don't think i could pull it off until i live in the mountains and live off the land and stuff
take that you remmission/leviathan heads! learn to grow with the band or just keep playing those two records forever! foh! mastodon rules
EOS is super heavy ppl are crazy if they disagree. Just turn the volume up!
Where can I buy those shades?
Any gas station in America
PLEASE when Daniel Dekay is a guest host, have him do the intro to confuse people.
so, no best of 2017 lock horns?
A God among men
The album with the best vocal performance is definitely Crack the Skye. Nothing will ever be as good as that album and it makes me sad.
Troy and Brann have some great vocals and even have small room to improve. But please never redo any of Brent's vocals. His delivery is always classic and unique.
I believe this dude is the most canadian one can be
0:24 say "out" one more time! I double dare you!
Bran?
Is BANGER dead and gone, or just for the month of June??
New Overkill review this week!
We're just on a short summer hiatus. :0)
based
that's exactly what I feel bout mastodon. the would be way more solid if they had a badass singer. I mean they don't sing bad at all but none of em sings the way I like
for me, troy could do all vocals on Mastodon, he's the only that sounds good live anyway
Yeah, his vocals sound consistently tighter than Bran and Brent (live). But some of the tracks all of them have made are straight-up earsex. Singing while drumming for a band like Mastodon is probably a rough gig too, I'd imagine. And what about B-Hinds' chocolatey vocals? Pretty essential component.
I'd get bored if it was just Troy every track, all the time.
yeah the trio are amazing together on Oblivion and Sultans Curse, but I wouldn't be "bored" if it was only Troy ; most bands have only one vocalist by default ;P
The Cadaver remission was like 90 percent troy
Kinda explains why they're mixing it up. Would be boring to push the same sounds over and over.
John Landis No
Birds audition for vocals
OUT
fuck it, I find the weakest lyrics are on Emperor Of Stand, still like them though.
Irrelevant boring band
Baffles me that they spent most of their time and energy on the vocals when they're the weakest aspect of the record. CtS was the highpoint for all three singers, and Brent did much better on OMRtS...
Tracks like Sultan's Curse, Ancient Kingdom, and Word to the Wise have some of my personal favourite Mastodon vocals!
