    I am following this story from London, England, and it's great to see what's happening on the ground. I almost feel I am there. We are preparing a book on railroad graphics, and have been living and breathing American railroads for the past couple of years. You have brought us out of our ivory tower, looking at books and maps, and taken us onto the prairies! Thanks for filming this great moment in steam history and making it available to those of us who can't be there. Simon Rigge, Publisher.

      It would have been far more appropriate if the Centennial unit was doing the trailing for backup power. That would have been cool, the last of the steam giants followed by the last Northern bought by UP followed by the last of the double-diesels.

Somehow it seems to convey just how big this thing is and what it takes to support the incredible weight. Also interesting is the profile. Where many Euro engines have the boiler sitting high up over the frames, these US engines are low down. Those are some nice profile shots.

    Its an amazing thing to see this iconic beast back up and running present day. Burning oil now so alas no coal smoke - too bad they cant inject some kind of benign harmless substance into the engine to get the look of the thick black coal smoke, that was a big part of the old steam engines look and persona. Nevertheless, we should all thank the amazingly talented UP crew that was in charge of rebuilding what is now certainly the largest running steam engine on the planet - they did a painstakingly detailed rebuild of this engine over the last few years, this was no paint and patch job she is a 100% first rate rebuild with a new oil injection mechanism in the firebox that I assume is still in the testing phases. They tried to fire a big boy back in the day and the attempt failed as it didnt build enough steam if I recall my reading correctly so it was converted back to coal - but todays oil fired injection methods should be much improved some 60 years later.

      Agree to a point, but as I pointed out to someone else, they're still working out the kinks. However, the lack of smoke just means that they have their very best fireman running the fuel to get BB4014 to burn so clean. Even on startup, when any engine is working harder, I noticed very little smoke, meaning the fireman is on top of his very best game.

      Still breaking him in, I believe, getting ready for the Golden Spike event. There's a LOT of moving parts that need to "bed" themselves. Regardless of the highest quality craftsmanship used to create/assemble any machine, the machine itself does the final "polishing & bedding", particularly things like piston rods sliding/pushing through end seals called "gland packing".

      no, under full steam. They are doubled headed, meaning both steam locos under power.
      UP decided to do this late in the planning as they didn't have sufficient time for break in trials. Less stress on the newly rebuilt loco.
      The SD70ACe is providing electric power to the passenger cars for lighting, AC, etc. and for back up power should there be an issue with steam.

    10,700 HP on this train...well probably quite a bit less considering they're only moving an average of 25-30 mph. I'm not too surprised neither of them have more pronounced stack talk; they don't need to work that hard! Which must definitely be something new for a Big Boy

    Big Boy makes the horse power take any 5 mile freight take off the 3 or 4 Diesel's pulling it and put Big Boy on that by itself, you will soon discover what Big Boy was made for.

  • @rf8481
    @rf8481 5 років тому

    Is the SD70ACE even powered up or is it just being towed in neutral? That is a hell of a lot of HP/torque and tractive effort. The Big Boy however has relatively small drivers and is not really built for speed but for long haul drags up steep grades (Sherman Hill). These locos are to UP what the beer wagon and the team of Clydesdales once were to AB.

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  5 років тому

      The SD70 is in the consist for dynamic braking. It is otherwise being towed.

    • @gospelsparky
      @gospelsparky 5 років тому

      It also is supplying power to the cars

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  5 років тому

      No, it is not. The SD70 is a freight locomotive; it is not equipped with the components to provide HEP to the passenger cars. The cars are being supplied by a generator car that is part of the consist.

    I'm kind of curious if that smaller yellow car behind the tenders on each unit is an extra water tank or what? Not sure if the tenders are sectioned off for both water & oil...

    • @KeijiSuwa
      @KeijiSuwa 5 років тому

      Those are indeed water tenders, used for long distance runs. They were originally fuel tenders from the UP's gas turbine locomotives.

    30mph? Are the still doing break in runs?

    • @gospelsparky
      @gospelsparky 5 років тому

      By the UP’s own account, they are considering the entire Ogden trip a break in run. (thus the short operating days/ distances) Check their channel, but apparently this is a prelude to a system-wide tour this summer. Can’t wait!

    To Union Pacific headquarters; It's awesome to see 2 your steam engines working together, but the diesel engine in tow in the story don't make no sense, why it's in tow? Next for Union Pacific headquarters when are the steam engines going to start pulling Freight cross country and passenger cars cross country in this next decade? According to old video from the 1950s it showed that 4014 and others of its class could pull a load 4 to 5 miles long, how soon will 4014 start working commercially to make money? And collect alot more fans and business. It's has a great start.

      tim moore when pulling a comparatively small load across relatively flat land, particularly when the fireman has the fuel dialed in right, there’s not too much smoke from steamers, typically. However if you watch closely, you can see a ‘normal’ amount of smoke from both steamers.

      @Phil MacGregor - It's simply the way they sound. You have a LOT of iron moving back and forth there to create rotary motion, and between the small amount of play required in the rod bearings, the valve boxes, etc., yes you will hear some mechanical noise. They have grease and inspection crews at every stop, so I doubt anything will fall off. They did have to tighten up the packing boxes on the 4014 a few nights ago on the shakedown run, but other than that, he's doing really well for the first real road trip since 1961. The 844 however, also has a leak on one of the cylinder packing boxes, but they're not pushing it too hard, so they'll probably wait till they pull into Ogden to repair it.😉👍
