- Rear shock replacement on 1999 (1st Generation Tacoma). This isn't a professional video, but it does show you one way to replace your rear shocks. You DON'T need a lift, jack, jack stands or any special tools. You basically need a 17mm wrench and a hammer. It took me approximately 20 minutes from start to finish. This is a simple "how to" video, I probably made mistakes, but the point of the video is to show the process, good luck.
You're missing a washer on the left upper inside of your sock. that's why your bushing separated. You also put the socks on the wrong sides. Right side shock is longer. That's why you had to compress the new shock that was already compressed on the left side. If both socks were the same part number then the auto parts store that sold you the shocks was not paying attention.
You're 100% right.
Left shock is shorter that the right one. I was confused with all the comments, but what I did is a measure the distance between upper and lower bolt of each side and yep they are different sizes.
Do you know the torque for this bolts?
Are both sides the same size/model number shocks? Bilstein said the there are two different part numbers for left and right side shock.
I'd follow what the part manufacturer recommends.
No they are not the same. They are different left and right
Any problems with putting the wrong side shocks on?
Good job! BTW-regarding other comments-rear shocks are exactly the same - only the front struts are different
Rear shocks are different. One needs to be longer.
Driver side is shorter than the passenger side.
How are these working out?
So far they have been great....as to longevity I'm not sure yet as I haven't had them a long time.
