    Great video. I appreciate it! Use of chains is relatively unknown. I had been thinking about the chain as a form of self-defence for cyclists in places where dedicated self-defence tools are prohibited. Many cyclists are carrying bulky chains (or auxiliary cables), 1-2kg, under 1m long, which are far from ideal, but some chains are wearable around the hip over the belt and cyclists have the perfect reason to have one.

      Cyclists chains are limited in their movement. Even modern factory made chains are limited in their movement comparing to middle ages Kusari Fundo where each segment of the chain was separately handmade by blacksmith so they even had different sizes of each segment. Besides who needs chain when no swords around. A rope will do the job. .

I do not have a formal instructor available to me right now, so your videos offer a wealth of insight for my informal practice here at home. My recovery hasn’t been easy (looooong story), but I think that once I get some tasks accomplished at home and make some space, I’ll be back to training. I’ve had it in mind for a few months now. A lot of the nuances of Masaki Ryu are lost here, particularly in the striking techniques; I don't even know that the length of the chain used here would allow for a lot of the Masaki Ryu waza. But I still think the material presented here is extremely valuable, particularly because these striking techniques, while lacking relative sophistication, are vastly easier to teach and learn, as compared to the more traditional modes. So bravo, for passing along techniques that can be learned and used. 👍👍

    Excellent seminar. Great techniques, very realistic and applicable.
    What should be the lenght of the chain or the rope?
    Thanks

    • @AkbanOrg
      @AkbanOrg  7 років тому +3

      The length of the chain is individual and should be measured according to techniques preferences. More grappling, shorter chain, more striking, longer chain.
      As a basic rule, if one holds the weight inside a full fist, the other weight should not reach the face (but there are exceptions)

    • @robinl3763
      @robinl3763 5 років тому +2

      As a general rule to what the lenght should be for you: Holding one end of the rope/chain, let your arm relax alongside your body. The rope/chain should hang freely down to the grund but not touching the ground. But as Akban stated, you might want different lenghts depending on situational use. Or simply use the general hint i wrote and adapt the space using your body instead of relying on the weapon.

I was just assuming, that - when your students are experimenting to figure out matching measurements, you'd give verbalized guidelines (how to feel, what should work how) first. I'd never claim that the issue (as any issue, when thinking about movement) could be explained in words entirely, but since for me, training in an AKBAN Dojo isn't easy to realize, right now, I'd be content with verbalization, while looking forward to further (and more detailed) instruction by learning in a branch of AKBAN institute. There are several chain and weight weapons. One type known as a konpi is mentioned in manuscripts as far back as the Nanbokucho period (1336-1392).
    Masaki Tarodayu Dannoshin Toshiyoshi (1689-1776), founder of the Masaki ryū, is said to have developed a version of the kusari-fundo while serving Lord Toda, as a bloodless weapon that could be used to defend the grounds of Edo castle.

    Takes years of practice. I injured myself seriously in my head was admitted to hospital emergency room. The Manriki is like a wild horse it takes a lot of time to tame it. It won't listen to you at the beginning. Be warned.
    That is also why no instructor will teach it.
    The Ninja Chain or Rope is shorter than the Manriki Gusari and was mostly used for entangling and throwing. I watched some DVDs from USA 20 years ago about the Ninja Rope. And I paid an excelent Blacksmith to make me few in Iron and in Copper (heavier).

    Slightly less impressed with this video. First off, a chain is a completely stupid weapon to carry unless you are in a motorcycle gang and unless you really are expert with it you will probably end up with either murder charges or severe injury charges if you ever use one. Secondly, pain is of course always useful for controlling and tempering an opponent but control can be imposed just as easily with a piece of cloth without incurring the risk of unintended death.

      It seems that you could benefit, perspective wise, from actually watching the whole thing.

    this instills false confidince it is fake do not learn this and think you can win in a street fight or defend from a knife against an experienced fighter

      peter larsen thats the thing buddy most people in the street that are trying to mug or attack you are not trained and are not experienced. These techniques are actually very applicable in real life. Its not the movies not everyone in the world is a trained knife fighter or martial artist and not an expert marksman.

      peter larsen nothing can counter an unannounced surprise attack. Thats the concept of "will be felt, not seen".
      In that context, any kind of defence is worthless except from wearing armor, or even better not being there...
