- Presented by Dennis Carey, Curator, JC Raulston Arboretum; Dr. Dennis Werner, Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Emeritus, NC State University; and Blake Wentley, Education Assistant, JC Raulston Arboretum on September 25, 2024.
We love talking to our fellow plant nerds! Denny Werner is a former NC State professor in the Department of Horticultural Sciences, best known around campus for his legacy of teaching Plant Propagation and Gardening with Herbaceous Perennials. He is known off campus more widely for his legacy as a plant breeder, introducing functionally sterile butterfly bushes and his vibrant and dramatic redbud cultivars, including 'Ruby Falls ' and Flame Thrower™️. Join us for this Garden Conversation where our Curator, Dennis Carey, sits down with Denny to talk about plant breeding, the exciting new plants that Denny has in store for the future, as well as his unrelenting passion for plants!

I have a Ruby Falls! Thanks Denny! Very interesting
I hope he will tell us more about breeding process, germination techniques, and seedling selection. So many amateur backyard breeder can try! Thanks!
Excellent! Thank you Denny!
Wanted to tell Denny something because of his patience with his work . I tell people that gardeners are the most patience people I know who else would wait for an acorn to become a tree. Thank you so very much for your patience Denny.
Yo how do I find about more about breeding plants
I saw a picture of ruby falls weeping reddish leaves. Beautiful Would it produce a lot of seedlings
Mine has not produced seedlings in Philly PA z7. I saw pods, but no baby trees.
Before i moved to nc , I lived in florida There was a redbud tree that was already in garden and bloomed in the spring. However i was forever digging up.redbud seedlings all over an.acre lot. Do you know any varieties that are not invasive like that
What was the name of the redbud that did not lose its red leaf color in the summer, please?
Garden Gems Amethyst or Hearts A'Fire.
Personal goal, eradicate all sweetgums and loblolly pines from my property
