Many Hindus were forcibly converted by invaders. Also emperors such as Aurangzeb organised mass conversions and those opposed conversion were even beheaded. Despite foreign persecution, Vedic people were not as weak as those in the west to come under the folds of Islam easily or Christianity per se. Many temples were converted into Mosques even the prominent ones.

We can look at Nehru and find a lot of faults but please remember India in 1947 was down in the dumps. As M.J.Akbar said once, nobody knew what this "animal" democracy was all about. It had given Europe dictators like Mussolini and Hitler. IT was an extremely bold step by the founding fathers of India to go for democracy and one vote for each person right at the beginning. India's literacy was 30% or less and poverty was immense and most Western commentators felt Indian leaders were crazy to go for democracy, secularism, one vote for each citizen.
Events have proved Western scholars wrong. They placed their bet on Pakistan, a more homogenous nation bound together by Islam but look at what happened to it!
For Nehru, democracy and secularism were articles of faith and he lived by them all his life. He did falter on economic and foreign policies, often with disastrous results but nobody can fault him on his credentials as a true democrat and secular person. He knit India together at a time when passions were running high.
While many institutions in India are going downhill or faltering, India continues to be firm on secularism, democracy.
Competition was Jinnah vs Gandhi, as seen by former, not latter. Jinnah was offered pm ship, but demanded all cabinet, too much. So he got his original demand, and was dismayed. Nehru was a truly good person, and this is said by some great ones. As for pak blaming India, what else can one expect! If they stopped they would have to give up.

We still pride ourselves of how good we speak english and berate those who can't speak properly. Slave mentality is ingrained in our DNA and that explains a lot about our history. Gosh Watching Hassan Nisar has impacted me profusely. As an Indian I want to announce to my fellow pakistanis that we stand behind you for there is so much to fight for in pakistan. Muslims are used to getting largesse. They did it with British and muslims of Pakistan have been doing it with Americans. They have the "landlord" mentality. Used to perks, lavish lifestyle, Jinnah and company could not imagine what would happen to them in a united India under Nehru who was an avowed socialist bent upon dismantling the "zaimndari" system.
Jinnah asked for disproportionately large number of muslim representation which Nehru could not agree.
By partition, India got rid of the feudal muslims who could have posed serious threat to growth of democracy. They would have kept on insisting "largesse" for muslims and due to their large numbers, held the country to ransom.
Congress did keep giving in to unreasonable demands and naming it secular.

Many Hindus were forcibly converted by invaders. Also emperors such as Aurangzeb organised mass conversions and those opposed conversion were even beheaded. Despite foreign persecution, Vedic people were not as weak as those in the west to come under the folds of Islam easily or Christianity per se. Many temples were converted into Mosques even the prominent ones.
