  • Here is an early version of my song “Fair Wind,” recorded not long after I wrote it. There is a boat of the same name that ran snorkel / dive cruises to Kealakekua Bay out of Keauhou Bay - still does - and my parents took me and my friends for a cruise on it for a number of my birthdays.
    Code: LIVE 116 • Fair Wind (K22ce)
Recorded with a Taylor K22ce (solid koa grand concert with Elixir strings) and a Line Audio CM4 microphone.

Your video backdrops give me the impression that you no longer live in Hawaii (could be wrong here); but if that is correct, then slack key must be a great way for you to maintain your ties to the islands. I have never been out on Kealakekua Bay, but your composition allows me to feel the trade winds, hear the waves lapping on the hull of the boat and smell the ocean's breathing. Well done!

May I ask what Elixir strings you are using? I also have a K22ce and play slack key and really love the tone those provide. I also find sometimes it is hard to get strings that handle the slack tunings well. Congrats on a lovely song and thanks for sharing it.

Aloha Stacy, and mahalo for your kind comments! I have been using Elixir HD Light Phospor Bronze strings almost exclusively for going on a decade now. I have a video explaining why I like these strings here - ua-cam.com/video/GtivLI5v6QI/v-deo.html (Warning - some people find this video a little boring, but if you want detail - well, there it is...) HOWEVER... lately I've been tuning the K22ce to C tuning, down a half step - so the 6th string is B - and experimenting with different Elixir sets. Also, the guitar's still 'mellowing out' (as koa does), and so I haven't decided which strings to use yet. For you - I would try Mediums (.13-.56) or HD Lights, and experiment between different alloys (80/20 bronze and Phosphor Bronze) and coating thickness (polyweb & nanoweb). Note - the HD Lights don't come in Polyweb. Wow that's a long answer - I think any of those strings will get you decent results though. Good Luck!

@@BlueSkyGuitar2 Thank you so much for the reply. I ordered some sets of these and look forward to using them on my guitar. Thank you also for the inspiration your channel provides to a budding slack key guitarist like myself.

Thanks! Since the Elixirs last so long it will take you a while to work through the different sets. Sometimes I'll take notes on what string set I'm using / how they sound and feel after I put them on so I don't forget a couple of string changes later what I thought of them. I also save the empty box in my case so I remember what strings are currently on there. Kinda nerdy, but possibly helpful. :-)
