    Fun fact! The Hyrule Field "sections" that you identified are indeed dynamic! The "danger" one is used when fighting enemies. The "serene" one is used when you're near any sort of water, and stop for a moment. The game has a fairly complex system and a lot more measures which they transition to depending on your location in the field (there are seven music transition hitboxes in the field), your state (rolling/running vs. walking/standing still vs. fighting), and even the time of day (dusk has a few special sections to itself)
    The version they put on the soundtrack CD is only some of the possible sections, played for a reasonable amount of time.
    So your arrangement of the piece could theoretically be played by the game itself if you did the correct things in the video game.

    • @DemonTomatoDave
      @DemonTomatoDave  8 років тому +21

      HOLY COW. I thought that was right about the danger section, but I didn't realise it was as intricate as that! That explains so much of what was going in our heads as we put this section together

    • @Sauraen
      @Sauraen 8 років тому +8

      +Michael Ashworth Not only that, there's actually 22 different sections, plus a master sequence which communicates with the engine and dynamically loads the appropriate next section. Also, did you know not all the sections are the same tempo--and the engine smoothly transitions between the tempos of different sections?

    • @DemonTomatoDave
      @DemonTomatoDave  8 років тому +6

      +Sauraen +Michael Ashworth Oh my god. I need to address some of this in the next part, where can I go and read / watch something about this?

    • @S0LV0
      @S0LV0 8 років тому

      +DemonTomatoDave I was actually gonna bring this up myself, but even I didn't know it was _that_ complex. But yeah, the reason the sections of the theme are so disjointed is because it's meant to be an interactive piece. Super cool!

    • @JasperRLZ

      +DemonTomatoDave Uh, so, I'm part of a community that reverse engineers Zelda games (e.g. I wrote magcius.github.io/zelview.js/zelview.html ), so I learned about the hitbox and the rest of the system myself. Otherwise, they mention it a bit in an Iwata Asks: iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/3ds/zelda-ocarina-of-time/0/0

    These videos have really given me an appreciation for how you put this music together, especially being a musician that has tried arranging music to different instruments. I hadn't even noticed you cut up Hyrule Field and changed the order! Good stuff.

    • @DemonTomatoDave
      @DemonTomatoDave  8 років тому +7

      +HyperLuigi Oh good! The aim was to come up with a cut-up order that sounded perfectly natural, and we worked pretty hard to find it!

      DemonTomatoDave Yeah, it absolutely did sound natural. Your work was not in vain!

      +DemonTomatoDave Actually I hadn't even noticed some of the loops you added in. Whenever I heard your song I heard the Hyrule field theme in the background. Fact is that if you hadn't mentioned the loop, I still wouldn't know it was there. I'd say that "It sounded natural" was an understatement in this case.

    What's really incredible to me is that usually when I'm trying to watch a video on 'how to' do something with a capella music while recording, they lose me in the first few minutes because their voice is just so boring and dull. But Dave, your voice is absolutely charming and a joy to listen to all the way around. It's captivating and keeps your attention, entertaining enough to get a few laughs with your little jokes, and actually *helps* me pay attention and enjoy learning! So thank you so much for not only bringing us education, but making it fun! :)

    I mean in the game the song is structured into sections like that so they could transition in and out of the song into the "fight song" with the different sections. It also doesn't feel that repetetive after spending like 20 hours there. Pretty damn smart I think.

  • @Bassoonify
    @Bassoonify 8 років тому +4

    I really like how using the overture theme allowed the arguement to progress almost recititive like. Sometimes having a chorus or melody to always come back to can slow down the progression of the story.

    Absolutely fascinating stuff, thanks for taking the time to do these Dave. When I first heard it, I always thought of the Hyrule Field music as being not so much a theme than a sort of musical base fabric from which highlights could emerge, dynamically if need be (which is the case for at least the danger sections), à la X-Wing. Good job on the remixing work that was necessary to use it as the basis of your song!

    I would like to point something out, in regards to how much you moved the parts of the song around.
    In the game, it doesn't always play the parts of the song in the same order. It will always play that opening, but sometimes it will go into the section you used for "Stop, before you say something you might regret", but I have had times where it skips that and goes to the dangerous part, or even to the serene part.
    The reason they did that was because they didn't want the music to get repetitive, since you would be spending a fair amount of time in Hyrule Field. So they made the sections of the song so they could be played in random intervals.

I’m not sure if you have a discord account or not but if you do it would be great help if we got in a voice call and then point out where you cut off the bits, because I am planning to have them be the same ones you chopped it up into. "Run 'round wild and free
    Dive in to the sea
    Climb a tree and gen'rally
    explore the flippin cooouuntry!"
    Though you did have to modify the end a bit, like most of the bits you used.
    EDIT: Huh. Section 6 sounds like the same thing, except lower. You didn't go through the whole bit there, so I'm not sure if it matches up better.
    EDIT2: And right after that you mention section 4, but the lyrics sounds like they're matched to Serene or Section 6, with Section 4 being the underlying bit. I'm lost now so I'm just gonna stop talking :P
