I have a question. We have a server (Server 2012) that needs to be replaced and it has our network shared files on it. I have setup the replacement server (2016) and it is working well. Before I take the original server offline, I would like to replicate all of the data from the network shared folder to the new server. Then, I am going to setup a second new server (2016) and replicate the data to it as well.
So, for a time, there will be 3 servers (1 old server running 2012 and 2 new servers running 2016). All of the servers will be running simultaneously and I want the shared folders to be synced on all three servers (seamless to the users so that, when they access the shared folders, it could be on any of the three servers).
Once this is working for a week or so and I know that they data is synced and also being backed up accurately, I will decommission the original server and remove it from the domain. At this point, I will have only the two new servers: both domain controllers with a synced copy of the shared files for redundancy in the event that one of these servers goes down, the other will have a working, identical copy of all the shared data.
Will DFS Replication accomplish this (I assume, setting it up as a "mesh")? Also, the original shared folder has many sub folders and files a wide variety of groups and permissions. Will permissions replicate with DFS or do I need to re-create the folder structure on the target servers to be identical (same permissions as I have on the original) and then the data simply replicates into the folders?
Thank you for your video...it is very helpful.
