      Apparently, the pot was painted later. So, the owner should actually have the paint professionally removed.

    So many ignorant comments about him scratching the paint. All of that paint would have to be removed to make it worth it's full price. The glaze underneath the paint is baked on.

      I know right? It's as if people don't understand what glazed pottery is or something.
      You'd never do this to a piece of indian pottery because it isn't nearly as durable, but glazed pottery like this can easily handle the scraping he did to reveal the original glaze.
      If I were the owner, would have asked how to most safely get the paint off and then I would have gone home and done it immediately.

      @@mjmdiver1137 Yes, it's as if many of these people commenting didn't even watch the video. The man scraping the little bit of paint did absolutely nothing to de-value the object. He's not stupid. The object lost value over time probably because the people who place high values on such things get old and pass away. Without the market to support high prices, the monetary value is going to fall.

    If he was going to scrape it off would it have been better to choose an area that wouldn't show up compared to on the wing. I wonder if that brush around the base would have been at less obvious area. And one has to consider if the owner may choose to keep it that color even if everyone would prefer to see the correct color.

    • @Bunny-ch2ul
      @Bunny-ch2ul 3 роки тому +4

      It depends on the kind of paint, but it would be chemically removed in some way or another. The glaze used on pottery is basically melted glass, so it's a very hearty material.
      (When we moved into our house, the previous owners painted the tile backsplash. We just used paint stripper on it. None of the tiles were damaged in the process. It's a very easy operation, it's just kind of messy.)

    • @richrol58
      @richrol58 7 років тому +2

      Hello! Sounds like you know more about the subject than I do...I am just assuming he would not be doing something to knowingly damage the obviously very valuable vase (and there are already patches on the object where the green has worn away and the blue is showing) and so it seems the process of restoration would have to anyway involve removing the green paint more or less using the crude method he is shown employing...the only other alternative is that the vase is beyond the possibility of restoration, which the "mood" of the segment (and the definitive stating of the $10,000 value) really doesn't seem to convey...As far as who (carelessly, to say the least) painted it green, that is one of the (many) questions that this segment leaves surprisingly (and uncharacteristically for the series, I must say) unanswered...(one of) the previous owner(s), no doubt, however--

    • @WildWildWest30000
      @WildWildWest30000 7 років тому +1

      Rich Rolwing That makes sense. Would cost quite a bit to have the green colour carefully removed. And who would want to paint over that gorgeous blue? I would hope that it was restored back to its original colour/hue of blue. They need an update. Van Briggles pottery are quite stunning. That green just looked atrocious.
