Awwww I just love his flabbergasted reaction to what its is worth! U can tell he was not expecting anywhere near that much! Makes me smile when ppl on this show are stunned into silence or tears or even laughter at what something they've owned and pretty much ignored for years is worth 😊
The owner of this desk is such a nice guy ! He’s the type of guy that most people will cheer for and people will be overjoyed for his success .

Lol. I’ve watched some of his clips and he’s literally that pessimistic on every item. No matter how valuable it actually is. Plus he’s got waaaaay too many experts to refer to who downgrade value IMO

This is pretty valuable as a piece of American history, but it's even more valuable as an early piece of Trapper Keeper history.

Not only did Lafayette help us win the Revolution, he was such a good friend of George Washington that he gave him the keys to the Bastille (now hanging in the entryway of Mount Vernon) and named his own son, George Washington Lafayette!
Martha Washington is an ancestor of mine as well as her great granddaughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee, the wife of Confederate General Robert E. Lee! This writing desk belonged to Mrs. Lee’s aunt! Her father’s sister.

France had nothing to do with winning the Revolutionary War. King Louis XVI and the Ancien Regime helped win the Revolution. France is the country that butchered them. If your neighbor helps you, and then your neighbor's kids kill him to take his place... you don't owe the kids. :/

She inherited the descendants of the slaves who George Washington asked his wife to set free after his death, but Martha didn't honor his request, so those people and their children ended up eventually going to the Lee estate.
Mrs. Custis Lee’s Arlington home now serves as our national cemetery.

I’m confused because Wikipedia says Elizabeth Law died in 1822 so why would the desk be dated 1823?
She died in 1831. Your source is inaccurate.
@@Lightworkps Sorry I should have been more distinct. Yes, Elizabeth Parke Custis Law (the mother) died in 1831. However, her daughter, Elizabeth Law (to whom the desk is dedicated) died in 1822. According to Wikipedia: The couple (Elizabeth Parke Custis Law & Thomas Law) had one daughter who survived infancy, Elizabeth Law (19 January 1797 - 9 August 1822)
But did the sender know she had died, as I think "postal" service from France to the states was a tad slow back then

I have direct lineage to an outcaste of the House of Bourbon of Louis XIV. He dueled with another Bourbon whom.lost the duel. He was exiled to.
French East India Company as a ship worker later betrothed to a Spanish orphan from a high caste & they both returned to the 'French' Coast of India.
Lafayette was quite the ladies man & dearly loved Marie Antoinette & had built a small village for her called Vermollionville. He would help Marie & her children escape.. They almost did but the carriage was forced to return to Versailles. France had lost much of her power on the High Seas by the early 1600's.

Sounds strange, since _aghast_ usually means horrified, though I guess it can just mean amazed. I've always thought it had a negative connotation. "Spencer Tracy played a character in _Guess Who's Coming to Dinner_ who was aghast that his daughter wanted to marry a Black man." Of course, our Roadshow guest might have been horrified to have not treated it like a $30,000-$50,000 item up to now. Or aghast that he was going to have to insure it for more than that amount and had little idea how to go about that. You don't just include it on your household insurance. On the other hand, he might actually have meant _gobsmacked_ or _agape_ . In any case what a wonderful historical item (one of a kind with that provenance) to have been preserved (and he clearly didn't do anything to mar it while he's owned it).
