I Bought a "NEW" Prebuilt Gaming PC on Amazon For $500.......

  • It’s been 2 years since I built my last PC, what a bummer. Honestly I do not see myself being able to build a new one anytime soon. However the other day i was thinking about how good we had it around 2020. That got me wondering what 500 bucks can get you in 2022 vs 2020. In 2020 a $500.00 budget could get you a respectable entry level gaming PC, in 2022 it can’t. I went to Amazon.com and purchased the first Gaming PC I could find that was under 500 dollars, let’s have a look.

Parallel ports can be used for anything, not just sending prints to old printers. We used to link up PCs together over the parallel port and play Doom/Duke3D/Quake. IIRC you had to run Hyperlink which was a Windows utility for treating serial/parallel port connections as communications ports with other computers. We had a whole little LAN setup over parallel ports and you could surf the network just as you can on a LAN today, using the Windows Network browser.

@@CharlesVanNoland yeah, at speeds similar to a 56k modem...
My dad had an old ibm Thinkpad which had an infared network connection. I remember when we upgraded to a 10/100 network setup with BNC connectors.... Few years after that, we got our first wifi card, a pcmia type "a" wireless setup.
I ran wireless network bridge from upstairs to downstairs and ran a small network off an old switch we got at a thrift shop. We also got a second land line, so we could occasionally run two separate 56k modems at a time. That was good enough for dial up red alert.
Not too long after that, they ran coax cable through our area, and we went from 6kbps to 1mbps. I remember downloading a video for the first time, and it didn't take 2 weeks for a music video.
I burned a bunch of cd's full of music videos and showed them all to my friends. Half their computers couldn't play them without lowering the resolution and colors so it didn't stutter.
The good music videos were mostly black and white with occasional splashes of color to not overload the processor and cause it to stutter.
Those were the days. Now I have a 950mbps download speed because I can't be bothered to spend the extra for 2.5gbps lan.

It's got a few gigs worth of SSD to cache just enough of any files used regularly enough to fill in the latency gap between the read request and the drive head seeking to the right position. They were a really good idea for about 15 minutes back when SSDs were still either silly-expensive or pathetically small.

This reminds me of the time in mid 2020 when one of my friends was getting a pc. He had a budget of around £700 so made him a parts list with something like a 2060/1660 Super and a 3600/10400F. I'd asked him if he wanted RGB and he said as long as it didn't affect performance so he only had a little rgb in this build. He asked why he wasn't getting an i7 so I explained that the gpu was the most important component and all that. I even linked a few prebuilts with a similar hardware config in case he didn't want to build his own. Then a couple days later I get a message from him saying he'd ordered a pc with an i7 and loads of RBG for £700. It was a 2600k and a 1050 Ti. It didn't even take the chip shortage to get this bad, it only needed someone who refused to listen and do his own research.

All that would do would be highlighting the ridiculous price gouging that's been going on since early 2021. How much difference would it show if he had used a 1080(for example) bought for the reasonable price of $250 two years ago vs paying $380 now? Both being technically brand new prices but old hardware. The idea was for a budget friendly or entry level pc back then vs the exact same now. Which the price has gone up higher than camel pussy.

@Zachary Welvaert if you're building a pc for pretty much any capacity except as an office workstation for emails and Microsoft office you can't really skip out on a gpu. The 650 doesn't even have driver support to run modern games. This prebuilt is a pure scam. For a little over $600, you could get a refurbished optiplex 9020 with an i7, 16gb ram and 1tb hard drive, then pop in a gtx 1080. Which is wild considering I did something similar to this back in 2020 and got out for a total less than the current cost of a 1080.
This isn't going to run Crysis or whatever is currently pulling more than 6gb of Vram but if you want max settings for stuff like Warframe, Destiny 2, Horizon Zero Dawn(i cant run at max but thats on me for being dumb) or Second Extinction, you could easily achieve this. Most games I've played recently don't require more than 4gb of Vram(which is what i currently have in my optiplex 9010 sff i7 8gb ram and gtx 1050 ti lp) so this was my upgrade plan. Also evidence of the type of people who are elitist dickheads that can't understand the use of hyperbole in using the original Crysis system requirements as a go to meme for a hardware benchmark. But apparently people don't seem to want to pull the stick out of their ass and see that I honestly couldn't be bothered to mention a recent title that does pull more than a single 1080s amount of power. Not even taking into consideration that three of the games I did mention can easily achieve max settings on less than 6gb of Vram since my whole point was to point out that you can still get an affordable-ish GPU that won't need to be upgraded for at least another few years, this combined with the fact that I even said I can achieve max settings on my 1050 Ti that has 4gb of Vram for those same games. The only reason I didn't mention the 1050 Ti in the first paragraph was because even I'm going to need to upgrade this within the next year or two. SO WHY THE HELL WOULD I EVEN RECOMMEND IT? WHEN MY POINT WAS TO GET SOMETHING THAT WON'T NEED TO BE UPGRADED FOR A FEW YEARS LONGER AND THE ENTIRE POINT OF COMMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE WAS TO SHOW YOU DON'T NEED A 10YR OLD PRE-BUILT THAT COSTS AS MUCH AS WHAT I RECOMMENDED.

Thanks for reminding me how old my system is… I7-3770K with a GTX780 and 16gb DDR3 1600mhz. I’m planning on upgrading when the RTX 4000 series cards are available for pre-order. Want to add a racing sim setup to the gaming corner so hence the wait on a new gen GPU as I’m hoping pre-order prices to be a little more reasonable…

I don't game, stream, or do anything remotely burdensome on my computers, but my Lenovo laptop from 2018 wasn't cutting it anymore (let's just say a "simple" Excel spreadsheet was lagging). So I ended dropping $1000 on a tower and two 27" monitors from Dell and I am rather pleased with what I got. I work in payroll & accounting and sometimes work from home. So, the most taxing thing I do is log in to web meetings. It works beautifully for what I need. This piece of junk you got was hilarious to watch. It looked as laggy as MS Flight Simulator 2000

Though the fact that I'm not picky about games, graphics quality or FPS plays role too. But honestly, there's no chance expecting anything good for amount equivalent to $500 in my country, my PC was medium tier office (not even gaming) PC back in 2013 and cost more than twice that.

That hard drive is actually pretty cool it's an SSHD and it said 8G so it's a spinning hard drive with an 8GB SSD as cache. Very slightly faster overall than a regular old drive with 64MB cache. I wonder if it was chosen for the speed boost (an odd choice) or just grabbed off a stack of used parts like the rest of this PC seems to be. It's neat transition-era tech though, everyone just kind of forgot about them when SSDs got cheap.

    • @CouchPotator
      @CouchPotator 2 роки тому

Those hybrid disks were crap. The SSD "cache" was too small to be useful, and they were paired with 5400 rpm drives. A normal 7200 drive would do laps around it.

The GPU would just run off of PCIE power - no PSU upgrades required. It's what I did when I was first looking for a PC during the crazy shortages. Surprisingly capable machine tbh. Available for a good bit under $500 as well.

I got the $589 Walmart one (online). It has an i7 4770 which makes a terrible bottleneck with the rtx 2060 nvidia (probably used for crypto mining). A DDR3 motherboard and RAM as well (we are in 2023). RGB it’s the less important thing here and they focused on it. I returned it, then I spent a little bit more ($800) for an i5 12400 with an rtx3050, DDR4 (Z series msi) motherboard with 16Gb RAM, 1TB sdd and a 750W PSU. If you you just want to save money, you better get a different one. IF YOUR BUDGET is $500 or less they have cheaper ones, it will be a good deal for budget ($300-$400), but don’t spend more than $500 with them, if you don’t have 800 but have 500, just be patient and save some money, won’t regret.

Some Micro Towers and some we're even SFF size with Lop Profile GPU's. Even the ones with i5-3470+ NEW GTX1050 I sold for less than 500 "dollars" if converted. I mean, that was a while ago and better than the piece of shit in the video. Sold dozens of them, never got one complaint. But I never oversold anything, even told them that the SFF PC's GPU might overheat in the summer and you might need to open the case to play :) ..but yeaaaa, that was 2017. GG 2022.
