    Every movie fan should know the biased nature of IMDb's ratings. Especially if that is your job. Studies have shown that most IMDb are male and young, which explains why female leading films have lower ratings and most films from Fincher, Tarantino and Nolan are on the top 250. I would never base the assessment of a film on a IMDB rating.

    • @yokatta-f
      @yokatta-f 4 роки тому +10

      I agree except in the "female leading" part. Most of the movies with "female leads" are just atrocious attempts of the Americans to appear as having a more "inclusive" and fair industry. While they often lack substance, the main mistake of this type of flicks is that Americans, and Westerners, in general, have tried to separate them from the rest of genres, creating some sort of genre on its own. These type of movies are often made around the notion that we're supposed to value them over the fact that there are more vaginas than penises on screen, which to anyone who is about room temperature iq is just insulting and ends up devaluing actually well made movies about women, or made around concepts such as femininity. That's not art, that's just politics.
      On the other hand, Tarantino has good movies but it's frankly extremely overrated, specially by young people as you said, same with Nolan. Also Tarantino is a known plagiarizer. I wouldn't be too harsh with Fincher, he is one of the good ones. But, anyway, it's just the popular vote as you say, but if you know how to read IMDb ratings based on the type of movie (mainstream or independent, popcorn or intellectual, amusing or interesting, with none of these being exclusive) it's still a pretty good tool.

      But this film has a male lead. Which is not typical for a Bergman film. I think a majority of them have female leads.
      TBH, this has got to be his most male movie he ever made. With that, I mean that the people who actually liked the movie are unlikely to be female.
      But "young" is probably applicable here. If you find a young person with the patience to watch this whole thing, I applaud you, and that young person.
      And it really is his worst film. Unless you have a very specific taste. But even if you love film noir... I would never recommend this movie, except perhaps as for a curiosity if you also love Bergman.

    Sorry but i really don't see the point of this essay. You fail to go into any in-depth analysis and by the end you're praises the film. Surly using the term 'worst' in the title suggest it's bad, this should be changed to 'underlooked'.

    The swedish film institute recently played this film this year at the cinema for one night only and they started off with some guy from the bergman foundation telling stories about how they tried to show this film in the 90s.
    So they asked him before and he said no and they still showed the film and then just a few days later bergman himself showed up and was so pissed and called them out for it.

    It's a brave thing to make a video with this title. I've just read Bergman's book "Pictures", where he himself re-views his own films. He said for this film that to him wasnt a strange thing to make a detective movie, the problem was that he was forced to make this one. As you can see, there are "glimpses" of his cinematic manuscript, but, also there is no passion and deep going into the matter, as in his late-r movies. He made a lot of movies, so there must be one to not be proud of. Bergman said that his two movies that he is not proud of were "The Touch" and "This could not happen here". Just like Kubrick said that the movie hi absolutely dislikes was his first, "Fear and desire", and also I think that David Lynch is not very happy with "Dune". You know, (sh)it happens, and the greats are humans too.

    Bergman was forced by contract to make this movie. When he said he wanted to quit the job in the middle of its shooting, a producer menaced him to be banned from the cinema industry for life. At least that's what Bergman himself affirmed. Other films that he did not like in his own filmografy were The touch, The serpent's egg, All these women.

    Just watched it again last night. I agree that it was a failed project...disjointed and more interested in capturing liv's olympic acting feats. But its also a supreme guilty pleasure.a freak show of grand proportion that, intentionally or not, lightens up the heavy scandinavian pseudo-psych prevalent in a majority of ingmars work. And it truly.is guilty. I watched it again.last night laughing and entertained, especially during that swingers party hosted by the aging mark of the gang of queens siphoning her off. The 70s decor alone is worth restoration. Criterion must release now

    Haha. A film noir from Bergman! I would watch it even if it is bad. I've watched only like 12-15 of his films, but in love with his style. So this film was basically to Bergman what Spartacus was to Kubrick.

      Yeah, in terms of "hating their own films", it would be the equivalent of Killer's Kiss, sure. But it wasn't really a financial move, was it? Kubrick made Spartacus to prove that he can make commercially successful films so that he can demand total creative control over his later movies. This is what, I think, Bergman planned on this.

    • @luismarioguerrerosanchez4747
      @luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 6 років тому +1

      That's a good point. But other reason for Kubrick's dislike of the movie was his clash with star Kirk Douglas, Spartacus being an ego proyect for him having fired a previous director before hiring Stanley Kubrick.

    The one Bergman film to which I cannot relate at all and (frankly) which I do not enjoy at all is "Fanny and Alexander," either the television or the theatrical version. I also find "Autumn Sonata" and "Sarabande" rough going. This is coming from the individual who believes that "From the Life of the Marionettes" may be Bergman's greatest achievement, along with "The Silence." Both are two of the dozen greatest films ever made.
