Good question! No, you don't have to empty the pen to draw in it, but after drawing in the sand your pen may not work as well for writing. So make sure you don't draw with your favorite pen for writing! :)

By the way I could find no book on Zen Garden designing like you are showing here. I was wondering how to use my set of tools. I also see how you use common items like the ballpoint pen!👍
Wow I’m exciting about your Zen Garden! Haha The reason I designed the Zen Garden this way is so one can get in the Zen state just by picking up anything they find on their desk. Rakes are great, but I also enjoy an object with pointy tip as it offers more flexibility to be creative in making designs. :)

It's a rare type of cactus. Doesn't require much water to thrive. :)

If anyone reading this is on a budget you can use a clean pair of chop sticks 👌all the stuff you need for a simple zen garden can be bought at the dollar tree too :)

Lemony Snicket You can probably check your local craft stores, or purchase at my online shop. The more fine the sand is the more detail your drawing will show.

Looks like chinchilla sand.. you can probably get this at every pet store.
